PROGRAM NOTE Passus (“having suffered”) is inspired by JS Bach’s Chorale, Durch Adams Fall ist Ganz Verderbt. This piece was originally written in 2015 and was edited during the Fall of 2019 for my friends Zachary Good and Benjamin Roidl-Ward. Movements: 1. Part I : Variations and Fragments — Part II : Remaining Fragments 2. “…to all things visible…” The Mind, that Ocean where each kind Does streight its own resemblance find; Yet it creates, transcending these, Far other Worlds, and other Seas; Annihilating all that’s made To a green Thought in a green Shade. … And in the quietude Of this silent kingdom Only muted voices could be heard From nocturnal birds, So solemn and subdued The muffled sound did not disturb the silence. Fragments from: Andrew Marvell, The Garden and Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, First I Dream (Primero Sueño)

Page 3: for Zachary Good and Benjamin Roidl-Ward · 2020. 2. 3. · BASSOON MULTIPHONICS The following is a list of multiphonic fingerings, numbered 1-10 here and in the score, from New Compositional

NOTE TO PERFORMERS The clarinet and bassoon duo should be performed rather freely, the piano serves as a scaffolding supporting and surrounding the duo. Moments of synchronization are marked with vertical dotted lines; dotted slurs denote larger phrases and connected passages; these should be observed meticulously. The performers should strive to create a resonant sound world, blending freely with one another creating a composite texture. The silences/pauses should be measured by the performers rather freely, treated as moments of reflection of varying lengths, the size of the performance space should also be taken into consideration during these moments. The series of variations and fragments should be performed as if experienced in a dream, fleeting moments, passing fantasies, surfacing and retreating into a dark void.

Page 4: for Zachary Good and Benjamin Roidl-Ward · 2020. 2. 3. · BASSOON MULTIPHONICS The following is a list of multiphonic fingerings, numbered 1-10 here and in the score, from New Compositional

CLARINET MULTIPHONICS The following is a list of multiphonic fingerings, numbered 1-7 here and in the score, from Zachary Good’s personal collection and New Directions for Clarinet, Revised Edition, Phillip Rehfeldt. Multiphonic 1 The F quarter sharp is obtained by depressing the sliver key; slowly release the sliver key to return to F natural. The F quarter flat is obtained by shading the open key with the right third finger; slowly release the third finger to return to F natural.

Multiphonic 2 Multiphonic 3 Multiphonic 4 Multiphonic 6 Multiphonic 7

Multiphonic 5 Is performed as a single gesture oscillating between the three multiphonics below.
