Some seven or eight years ago I was approached by a small group to see if I would be willing to offer a home to a meeting based around something called Transition Towns. I, like many, was blissfully unaware but decided to listen to what was said and for a while be involved. The messages were stark and proposed actions to remedy were pretty radical. But the thinking made sense. So ‘localism’ and ‘sustainability’ got on to the radar of at least one busy Vale resident.
I have always been pragmatic, believing continuous small steps towards an eventual goal can be the best guarantee of success. These few words give you my personal assessment of some of the very positive things that I have seen move forward.Business-wise we have moved in the food and liquor trade from ‘locally-sourced’ being an occasional adjunct to menus ten years ago, to being an essential for much of the market, with detailed provenance often a key part of the mix. The appearance, growth and success of local producers such as Bredon Hill Foods is testament to this. Beer production has gone micro and local, with some amazing new local brewers producing some interesting products all within 30 miles of Evesham. ‘What are your local ales?’ can be answered with confidence.
Issues of sustainability have even reached mainstream local politics. A few years ago as a Parish Councillor I was looked upon with confusion and perhaps disdain when the subject was raised. Now there is a strong drive for local sustainability such as allotment holding. In Bretforton we have opened a Community Shop, run largely by volunteers, serving the local community and focussing on local produce and supply.All these things add up on the journey to local sustainability. They are good for the planet and good for the soul. For my part it’s been a privilege to have been involved and all power to the TEV elbow.

TEV has been asking local cafe, pubs and hotels to source at least 30% of their food from within 30 miles of Evesham, over the year. It’s a self-regulating measure, we are not into being ‘food police’, but these establishments have signed up. Do patronise them - and let us know of any others you know or hear about.

Fresh Fruit & Veg - The Best!We all have the feeling that fresh fruit and vegetables are good for us but why?
Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals including folic acid, vitamin C and potassium. They’re also an excellent source of dietary fibre which
helps deal with constipation and may also help to prevent certain cancers. They can reduce our risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are usually low in fat - provided they are not prepared with lots of oil - and low in calories, and can help us to maintain a healthy weight.
They have naturally occurring rather than refined sugars and contain many nutrients that keep up our energy levels.
Whilst any fruit and vegetables can be good for us, fresh produce does not contain the extra additives, sweeteners, sugars, fats and salt added in some manufacturing processes. When you look at ingredients on processed foods they are listed in order
of quantity. The amount of fruit may be well down the list!To keep healthy as Colin Tudge said “Eat food, mostly plants”!

Growing in the Vale
Growing in the ValeThe Vale of Evesham is one of the most fertile areas of the country. Protected by the Cotswold escarpment and with light alluvial soils watered by the River Avon, The Vale has long been associated with fruit and vegetable growing. In diversity and range of produce, the Vale surely must be the most productive area of the UK.
Horticulture in the Vale can be traced back to the early 19th Century. In 1805, asparagus, cucumber and onions were grown on considerable scale and sent to Birmingham markets. From 1825, Badsey became the focus. In 1852 the railway to Oxford opened up, making the start of the ‘modern’ period of horticulture, providing essential transport links to reach new customers and in 1871 appears the first use of the term ‘Market Gardener’ in the Badsey Census. Anyone interested in the history of marketing gardening should obtain the ‘Market Gardener’ DVD from the Badsey Society. It provides an insight into the Evesham Custom, Hovels, etc, which contributed to the great success of our horticulture. More on the Badsey Society website!
Nowadays, with the increasing demands of customers, tomatoes (grown in the Vale since the late 19th century) are now grown hydroponically, for 52 weeks a year. New technologies such as diffused glass, LED lighting and Combined Heat and Power systems help to satisfy the demand for British produce. New strains of asparagus mean a much longer than traditional season of St. George’s Day to Midsummer. New and exotic crops such as Pak Choi and a range of micro-herbs supplement brassicas, field vegetables and the abundant apples and plums.
Horticulture across the West Midlands is a dynamic and growing sector. A 2011 study, ‘The Heart of Horticulture’, found that it is efficient and an important economic driver. It is estimated to be worth £350 million at ‘farm gate value’ - doubled when you include food processing. Over 20,000 people work in horticulture, yet it uses only 3% of the land. It’s a great success story, due to areas like the Vale of Evesham and crops like asparagus. The region accounts for 65% of all UK asparagus with 820 hectares dedicated to this wonderful crop in Worcestershire. And the best, of course, comes from the Vale!

The Transition movement has groups across the country, and now internationally. We are about changing from a ‘high-carbon economy’ to a low one, where we consume much less fossil fuel – coal, oil and gas. The great majority of climate scientists now believe the changes we face – storms, floods, hurricanes - are caused by human activity. 2014 was the hottest year since records began in 1880, thirteen of the hottest fifteen years have occurred since 2000.
A major cause of rising carbon emissions is the production, transportation, packaging and storage of food. We need to think harder about how we source our food, transport it and preserve it. In the Vale of Evesham we need to focus on supporting local growers and producers – and make sure our supermarkets stock their goods too!
TEV wants to see the Vale community built around local production, more sustainable forms of transport, and locally-created ‘green energy’. There are a growing number of solar farms, but much better would be (small) wind turbines, and solar panels on the top of every building – providing most of the electricity needed, certainly when the sun is out! Good insulation is also vital, these things are urgent for all the new housing being currently built in the Vale.
