Message from the President

Welcome to NCJW Peninsula Section’s 2019– 2020 year! I hope you participated! Thank you to Hope Cole-man, Peggy Klang, Susan Fox, Penny Santiago and the entire Steering Committee for an-other wonderful event.

We had a fabulous Health Forum learning First Aid and CPR. Pnina Knopf, Martha Levi-ton, and Linda Pachter deserve thanks for their hard work.

Our autumn is busy with activities for you to participate in also. We will honor our Founder’s Day recipient, Carole Tolkin, on Friday, Septem-ber 6th. Our first program meeting of the year, on Thursday, September 12th, features Susan Herman, president of the ACLU. Susan will speak about our freedoms and the courts. Grab your cards and mah jongg sets for Fall Game Day on September 17th. Our first lecture of the year will be on September 24th at the Bristal.

October is filled with many holidays – L’Shana Tova! We will offer our members a special treat on Sunday, October 27th. Tom Chapin per-forms! Bring your children, grandkids, and a nonperishable food donation to what will surely be great time.

Don’t forget to volunteer for our ongoing community services. We always need your participation in what is the heart of Peninsula Section. Donate and shop our Thrift Shop for bargains galore! Watch for the grand opening of the Joan Riegel Women’s Center this Spring. We plan to help women reenter the workforce.

Peninsula Section offers a place for all to use their talents to make the world a better place and have a wonderful time while doing it.

I’m proud to lead this amazing organization and work with the hard-working, thoughtful women who keep it going. — Myra Garber

ADVOCACY

on Capitol Hill advocating for women, children and families

NCJW Advocates Make Their Voices Heard in D.C. MICKY FRIEDMAN

It was a thrill to be part of this really large group of “like minded and very smart women”, all here in Washington, because we all want to advocate for issues that we really care about.

And yes, the wonderful speakers such as Cecile Richards and Senator Heidi Heidcamp were inspirational, and yes, it was a thrilling first time experience to walk into the Russell building where the House members have their offices – and then meet with Kathleen Rice’s aide, Liz Amster, and yes it was thrilling to walk through the Hart building and meet Senator Schumer’s aides and be part of the New York delegation discussing our most important issues.

But, most of all it was the women I met at each event, and sat with at each meal that was so special. Women from all over the U.S. and Israel, Canada and Australia. Their warmth, camaraderie and the just plain good feeling of seeing so many young women participating and being a part of this great group was in itself a sense of pride that I was a part of this.

It felt really good to know that this faith based ideals organization of volunteers and advocates will go on for a long time. I truly appreciate and value the opportunity to take part in this fantastic event.

ADVOCACY

Advocacy Film Series: “Screenagers”

Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 pm Hewlett Woodmere Public Library

For you, your own child, teen, or grandchild – “Screenagers” is a must-see! Filmmaker Delaney Ruston, MD, explores the challenges of our digital age – its impact on human development, both physical and emo-tional. By recognizing our addictions, we may move closer to striking the balance crucial to our well-being.

Our Facilitator: Lindsay S. Weisner, Psy.D. a mother, psychologist, and author (her newest work Ten Steps to Finding Happy, forthcoming early 2020) will help guide us through this complicated issue.

Tickets: District 14 residents may pick up their tickets at the library beginning Wednesday, October 16 from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm. NCJW members may call the office, 516-569-3660, to reserve tickets and pick them up at 1:30 pm in the lobby of the Gold Theatre on the day of the screening.

Let’s Take Notice: Girls Matter PAM SHELDEN – Facilitator, Generation Next

On October 11, 2019, people from around the world will mark the “International Day of the Girl.” Since 2012, the United Nations proclaimed that October 11th be set aside in recognition of the many injustices girls suffer—from female genital mutilation and breast ironing to little or no education, forced early marriage and human trafficking.

In July 2019, three local high school students, all members of Peninsula Section’s teen advocacy group, Generation Next— Alexandra Fox (Lynbrook HS), Ethan Eisenberg (Hewlett HS), and Kira Grossman (Hewlett HS)—wrote to Governor Cuomo and other local, state, and federal legislators asking them to proclaim the day. At the time of this writing, the teens have already received a proclamation from State Senator Todd Kaminsky.

Along with Maia Jerchower (Oceanside HS), the teens will act as ambassadors on their return to school, visiting their English and Social Studies classrooms, educating their friends and peers about the various injustices girls face worldwide.

In the U.S., the teens’ efforts are especially urgent given the female assaults highlighted by the #MeTooMovement and the current threats to a girl/woman’s right to choose control over her own reproductive health.

By spreading the word and reaching out to press and community, the teens will speak for girl-children in this country and world-wide who are unable to speak for themselves.

In their grassroots efforts, our teens are working to perfect an imperfect world. For when girls are deprived of their dignity and their human rights, the family is crippled as well. What is good for girls is good for everyone if a society is to move forward.

By spreading the word and reaching out to press and com-munity, the teens will speak for girl-children in this country and worldwide who are unable to speak for themselves.

FAMILY EVENT – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Program Meeting – Sunday, October 27, at 11:00 am Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre Tom Chapin and Michael Mark The New York Times calls 3-time Grammy winner Tom Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” Chapin is a renowned singer / songwriter for both family and adult audiences. His career spans Broadway, TV, documentary and feature films, and the concert stage.

Tom Chapin’s performances appeal to all ages, his songs tell the stories of our times. Chapin presents a lively, interac-tive and fun-filled performance which engages the hearts, minds and imaginations of his listeners. His witty, life-affirming original songs convey positive messages about family, good food and the green earth. Lend your voice, sing a round, learn a song in sign language and discover the music of a didjeridoo.

Michael Mark received a Drama Desk Award for best sup-porting actor in the role of Stanley in the original Broadway cast of “I Love My Wife.” From there, he signed on as musical director for the national tour of “I Love My Wife” starring Tom and Dick Smothers. He is perhaps best known for writing the theme for TV’s “Entertainment Tonight.”

Tom sings and accompanies himself on guitar, banjo and autoharp [and sometimes didjeridoo]; Michael Mark sings and plays bass, Irish whistle and concertina [and marimba or xylophone if you have one].

Universally Accessible Playground In 2001 NCJW Peninsula Section provided the vision and the funding for the first Uni-versally Accessible Playground in Nassau County, located in the Andrew J. Parise Park in Cedarhurst. It is a playground where children of all abilities and those with dis-abilities can play side by side. A place where our future generation of leaders can learn inclusion and unity. Today it is used by thousands of children. NCJW Peninsula Section is proud to help in the upkeep of such a wonderful playground.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

How SIBSPlace Touched My Life JUDIE HOROWITZ – Chair, SIBSPlace

SIBSPlace is a free therapeutic support program for children ages 5-17, who have a sibling with a devastating medical illness or a parent with cancer. SIBSPlace provides expressive arts activities, develops coping skills, provides dinner and homework support, parent group, bereavement counseling and so much more.

Although our original cause was helping the children cope, we soon realized that, when one family member is hurting, the whole family suffers so we added a support group for the parents. Jennifer is one of our moms and I’d like you to be able to read what SIBSPlace means to her family. This is from a speech she delivered at our fundraising auction.

My name is Jennifer and I have an adorable 6-year-old son named Andrew. On March 22, 2016, my wonderful husband Chris learned he had a mass on his right kidney. Five short months later, we were terminal. I say “WE” because cancer only physically manifests in one family member, but everyone suffers. I remember Chris saying “TERMINAL” to me. That night, I was frightened for Christopher, but mostly frightened for Andrew, our dear, sweet Andrew… A week later I asked the school social worker to help us. His teachers always referred to him as “joyful”, and it was important for us to ensure that he remained a happy child. She immediately told us about SIBSPlace and I knew I needed to call.

The morning after Christopher passed away, I had the worst conversation of my life. I had to look my beautiful son in his big blue eyes and tell him that his role model, his hero, his amazing father died last night. As I sobbed uncontrol-lably, my baby cried with me. After a minute, he stopped and wiped his tears. He put his hands on both sides of my face and said, “Mama, don’t cry. Daddy loves you so much. Just think of the happy memories.” And in that moment, I KNEW the magic the staff works at SIBS.

The morning of services for Chris I was inconsolable. Andrew woke up and suggested that we start a memory book and a time capsule to keep all of our good memories in a safe place. Here was my wonderful boy making sure that his Daddy would be remembered for the fun times, and not the suffering that he endured in the last five months. I thought, “Thank you SIBSPlace”.

And thank you NCJW for your continuing support.

The teachers were very grateful for their EXTRA help and integrating the children with their classwork and personal attention, which they give to the children. The children feel like insiders in the system and not an outsider. The volunteers have felt a sense of joy, fulfillment and commitment to the children and teachers, working in the classroom with the students .

The teachers expressed their thanks with certificates of appreciation, small gifts and flowers for the volunteers. We are all looking forward to another year in the fall, working together and making a difference in the children’s lives.

If anyone wishes to join us in the fall contact Marcia Roth 516-569-3510.

Thank you to the NCJW volunteers in the ENL Program: Sandy Shone, Amy Moritz, Leslie Rosen, Rhonnie Fischman, Tammy Waldhauser, Ellen Schieren
