All Hands On Deck For The New Learning Lab MCSC is planning to grow again, this time adding 2,600 sf to its Education Center. The new space will be dedicated to the fleet, with three work bays and an adjacent classroom so our members can learn more about how the boats in our fleet operate, and what to do when they don’t!

The new $1 million Capital Campaign to build the addition will cover three needs: build more flexible learning space, mod-ify the boatyard, and create a dedicated fund for fleet and classroom replacement needs.

The “Hands On Learning Lab” will feature work bays large enough to hold two Ensigns and one J24. It will also have a classroom with work tables for members to do detail projects as well as house MCSC’s new sci-ence, technology, engi-neering and math (STEM) classes known as “Sailing Into Schools”. Started last fall, these 8th grade classes have been well received with more schools inter-ested in joining this aca-demic program.

The project will include upgrades to the boatyard to accommodate all the types of sailing we do at MCSC. A simple turn around will help traffic flow, and water and electrical access in the yard will be upgraded. The ADA ramp will be reversed: the top will be closer to the dock house and the bottom closer to the hoyer lifts and the Ensigns, so sailors can get to the boats easier! The youth boats and dinghy’s will stay near the ramp and the day sailors will stay near the cranes. Outside we’ll add a rinsing area for gear, wetsuits and equipment, and a larger rinse station will clean boat hulls before they enter the work bays. The addition will have a roof top deck area for socializing and a covered walkway to provide shade .

MCSC appreciates the creative team at Korb Tredo Architects who helped bring our mem-bers’ visions, as shared in planning sessions last winter, to life.

As we move forward with more educational space and improved year round pro-grams, the Board of Directors at MCSC has opened a new “Legacy Fund”. Donations to this fund will be held at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and never spent. Pro-ceeds from investing the money will be used for classroom supplies, sails, lines, and other items we need to replace every few years. The goal of the Legacy Fund is to ensure that there will always be high quality teaching equipment and well rigged boats available for future generations of new sailors.

MCSC is fundraising for this project and donations can be mailed or dropped off at the office. We anticipate 18 months of fundraising, with construction in the summer of 2016. In the meantime we’ll continue our programs as usual.

Around The Buoys With all the cold water in the lake from our long winter, summer sailing came late to the Milwaukee Bay. By the time the fog lifted in late July, the Mid-Season Champi-onship was cancelled, but racers made up for it later in the season. On August 3rd 14 boats were entered in the Quarter Barrel Regatta, a distance race of 9.3 miles to the bell buoy and back. By mid September, teams were ready for a full weekend of racing. On Saturday, Sept 13th, three races set the Fall Regatta, and then Sunday’s En-sign Championship brought out 12 teams in a 5 race series. Congratulations to all the crews!!

Tom Molinski entered MCSC’s Typhoon Mary into Louie’s Last Regatta, a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital. Tom and crew Jeff Lindsay, Mark Matteson and Scott Nelson, came in second in their division!

2014 Summer Sailing 577 adults and children took part in Sailing Center classes this summer. Our most frequent sailor this year was Arlene Wisotzke with 48 recorded sails as skipper!

Tied for second most sails were Bonnee Beth Lugauer and Donovan Flisram at 34 times out for Open Sailing each. Teresa Coronado came in next with 33 sails.

Adding to their tally this summer, Donovan sailed on 22 private lessons and Teresa went out on 17 lesson sails.

Mike Young and Bill Raduechel joined us at Enrichment the most times this summer. Almost 800 people came down to the Sailing Center for boat rides and 588 of them were

persons with disabilities. 3,434 hours were recorded on the boats for Open Sailing between May 3 and Oct. 19. Raven, with her pretty new main sail, was the most used boat in 2014 logging over 357

hours of Open Sailing time on the water, followed closely by Pizzazz with over 350 hours and Spray with 344 hours of Open Sailing. These hour counts don’t include instruction sails which occur almost every evening during the summer months!

Our busiest day of Open Sailing was Saturday, September 6th with over 121 people on the water for 97 hours of sailing!! Our next busiest day was Saturday, August 24th with 121 people sailing 95 hours. Usually our busiest days are in July. The weather definitely kept sailing down in the beginning of summer!!

Weekend Cruising – Party of Two FEE - $10

Tuesday, January 13 6 – 8 pm

Join us for “Weekend Cruising – Party of Two” presented by

Don and Angie Doggett. This is a can’t-miss class for the

couple who has always wanted to charter or cruise together,

but need a bit of advice and encouragement. Topics will

include things like how to get started, where you can go,

what to eat, how to pack and what to do when you arrive!

Don’t miss this informative, FUN session on short-trip cruis-

ing for two!

Bareboat Chartering FEE - $10

Tuesday, January 20 6 – 8 pm

Bareboat charterer and MCSC instructor Ron Reitz shares

his knowledge on bareboat chartering. Ideas on researching,

organizing and executing a great charter from start to finish.

Ron has chartered all around the world and his tips, planning

skills and great ideas on bareboat chartering will leave you

eager to get busy planning your own great adventure!

Sail Trim and Sail Shape FEE - $10

Tuesday, January 27 6 – 8 pm

Tom Holman will help you explore the technical side of how

to change the shape of your sail and how that affects your

boat’s performance. We will also look at how to balance the

forces acting on your boat. While we get a little technical in

this class, it will give you a good foundation as you move

into the practical application of sail trim in other classes and

while out sailing on the water.

Advanced Theory of Upwind Sail Trim FEE - $10

Tuesday, February 3 6 – 8 pm Nick Hayes will teach the importance of your sail shape, sail

trim and rig adjustments with a focus on upwind sailing.

This is a great course for those with some experience. 1+

years of sailing recommended.

Personal Safety Afloat FEE - $10

Thursday, February 5 6 – 8 pm

Brian Adams will help us increase the level of safety for our

boats, ourselves and our preparations to ensure the utmost

safety in our sailing experiences. Whether you are a brand

new sailor or a seasoned veteran, join us for a night dedi-

cated to helping you to attain a higher level of safety afloat!

Advanced Theory of Downwind Sail Trim FEE - $10

Tuesday, February 10 6 – 8 pm Nick Hayes will build on the basics from Advanced Theory

of Upwind Sail Trim and continue to refine your trim and

rig knowledge teaching with an emphasis on spinna-

kers and introduction to “polars”. This is a great course for

sailors with 2+ years of experience.

This DARN VHF Radio! FEE - $10

Thursday, February 12 6 - 8 pm

A VHF radio is our number one form of communication

while aboard – and yet many people aren’t sure how to use

it correctly. Brian Adams will help unravel the mysteries

of that confounded VHF radio! A great class for everyone

who would like to be safer on the water!

Racing Tactics – Upwind and Starts FEE - $10

Tuesday, February 17 6 – 8 pm

Which end of the line is favored – the pin or the boat? Do

we go inshore or off? Which tack is favored? You will

learn about some upwind tactics and basic race starts in

this informational class!

Racing Tactics – Downwind & Spinnakers FEE - $10

Tuesday, February 24 6 – 8 pm

Rounding the buoy and heading for the leeward mark – so,

how do we handle downwind tactics? Is this a gybe-set or

standard? Which side of the course do we favor? Discover

the answers with local racers, Mark Rodaer & Scott Con-

ger, two of the fastest racers in town!

Anchors Away! FEE - $10

Thursday, February 26 6 - 8 pm

Jeff Bird will discuss appropriate anchoring procedures and

techniques for chartering or cruising. He will discuss se-

lecting good anchorages, how to use a windlass, and tips

for picking up rental moorings. Increase your fun and your

skills by learning proper anchoring!

Race? Me!!?!!? FEE - $10

Tuesday, March 3 6 - 8 pm

Have an interest in getting on a boat to race, but aren’t sure

where to begin? Does it seem like you will be the only

person who doesn’t know what’s going on? Come join Jon

Breschak and other racing newcomers to find out what rac-

ing is all about, how to get involved and how to have a

great summer of rounding the marks next season!

Basics of Navigation FEE - $75

Wednesdays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25 6 – 9 pm

Join Capt. Gary Berg for this fast-paced, introduction to nav

aids, compass reading, charts, plotting and more. For the ex-

perienced sailor, this course includes work completed both in

class and outside of class.

Cruising 101 FEE - $10

Thursday, March 5 6 – 8 pm Join Jeff Bird who regularly cruises on Lake Michigan for

this class which will discuss preparations for cruising, navi-

gation, emergency situations, equipment and more. A fun

class full of great information!

Leadership, Learning & Teachable Moments Fee-$10

Tuesday, March 10 6 – 8 pm This interactive workshop is tailored to those already in or

wishing to be in leadership roles; Volunteer Instructors, or

those wishing to move up into advanced ratings. We will

explore leadership, learning and decision making skills and

move them into the boat.

Basic Racing Rules FEE - $10

Thursday, March 12 6 - 8 pm Join US Sailing Certified Race Judge John Strassman for an

introduction to basic rules of racing. The better you know

the rules, the sharper you will be tactically on the racecourse.

This is a great course for the MCSC Certified Race Skipper

and for anyone who wants to be safer on a race course.

Weather Wise FEE - $10

Tuesday, March 17 6 - 8 pm Join MCSC Staff and Meteorologist Joe Fillingham for an

introduction to basic weather concepts including large scale

weather systems, fronts, and gradient flow. This class is a

great addition for anyone looking for the “how and why” of

our everyday weather.

Lots ‘O’ Knots FEE - $10

Thursday, March 19 6 - 8 pm Join Gene Cramer to learn some basic knots that every sailor

should know. Learn – or just refresh your memory - on the

bowline, clove hitch, dock cleat, figure 8, dragon bowline

and many more. A great class for anyone who needs to brush

up on – or learn their essential knots!

US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification Fee - $100

Tuesday, March 24 6 – 8 pm

Earn a national rating with US Sailing’s Keelboat Certifica-

tion. You must have a current MCSC Medium or Heavy Air

Rating. Fee includes US Sailing membership for a year, ma-

terials and exam.

Line Splicing 101 FEE - $10

Thursday, March 26 6 - 8 pm

Learn how to splice and whip lines. This is a valuable mari-

time skill. Gene Cramer will teach you how to splice those

eyes and make new dock lines for your boat…or ours. This

course is limited in size due to the individual attention re-

quired, so sign up early. Walk-Ups will not be accepted.

Introduction to Sailing - Section A FEE - $5

Tuesday, April 14 6 – 8 pm

Brand new to sailing? Then this class is for you! Join us for an

introduction to the basic concepts of sailing. Learn some basic

boat parts, points of sail, sail trim, knots, tacking, gybing and

much more.

Cruising the Trans-Atlantic Crossing FEE - $10

Thursday, April 16 6 – 8 pm If you’ve ever thought about doing an ocean crossing or just

want to hear stories of one, join Tom and Jean Wolfrum who

lived on their boat for 10 years and sailed the Transatlantic Cir-

cle. They will take you on a journey thru the Ocean Blue!

Introduction to Sailing – Section B FEE - $5

Saturday, April 18 9:30 – 11:30 am

Brand new to sailing? Then this class is for you! Join us for an

introduction to the basic concepts of sailing. Learn some basic

boat parts, points of sail, sail trim, knots, tacking, gybing and

much more.

Dryland Refresher for Returning Sailors FEE - $10

Saturday, April 18 12 – 2 pm

Shake out those winter cobwebs. Review basic theory, terms and

maneuvers. Rigging, docking and crew-overboard drills are also

covered. This class is a great way to prepare for the upcoming

2015 sailing season!

Spinnaker Basics FEE - $10

Saturday, April 18 12 – 2 pm

MCSC’s own Jared Drake teaches this dry land, theory based

course as he discusses the use of spinnakers in everyday sailing.

Learn the different parts of the sail and the lines and learn how to

set, fly and douse your “chute”.

The Floating Gourmet FEE - $10

Tuesday, April 21 6 – 8 pm Sailor and author Jean Wolfrum spent 10 years living aboard her

35’ sailboat! She and her husband sailed across the Atlantic.

Jean will discuss how to keep a crew happy with gourmet meals

aboard. Join her as she discusses recipes and ideas for cooking

like a gourmet while you sail away!

Using GPS FEE - $10

Tuesday, April 28 6 – 8 pm Jeff Marquardt from West Marine will work with you to teach

you the fundamentals of the GPS. A marine GPS is a wonderful

tool for any boater! If you happen to own a GPS, be sure to

bring it along, but come ready to participate even if you don’t

own one. This is a hands-on class, so be prepared to do some

outside work – weather permitting.

Raising Sails & Rising Winds – 2 sessions FEE - $30

Thursday, April 30 AND May 7 5 – 7:30 pm

MCSC’s own Tom Holman will take you on a journey to

prepare for sailing in higher winds. This 2-part course is

intended to teach you how to properly reef a boat, prepare

your boat and “ditty bag” and choose appropriate gear. The

first session will be classroom instruction, and the second

session will be an “on-the-dock”, on-board, reefing session

with hands-on practice. A Must-Have class for any sailor

who wants to be “Scout Ready”. Please note the earlier

start time (5:00 pm) to allow for on-the-dock time if

weather permits.

MCSC Race Skipper Certification FEE - $5

Sunday, May 3 10 am - Noon

In 2013, MCSC implemented a new policy in our racing

programs. To check-out and skipper a boat for any racing,

you must fulfill this classroom requirement as part of the

certification process. An “experienced” Medium Air Rating

(for 1+ years) required. This class assumes that you have

some basic knowledge of the racing rules.

Dockings & the Mooring Basin – 2-sessions FEE - $30

Tuesdays, May 5 AND 12 5—7:30 pm Jon Breschak will talk about leaving from and returning to

the dock, docking and the best way to get through the

dreaded mooring basin. This is a Must-Have class for any-

one who wants to make better dockings and figure out the

best way to navigate through the mooring basin. This is a 2

part class that will encompass both classroom and on-the-

water time if weather permits. Space is limited and regis-

tration for the class is required. Walk-Ups will not be ac-

cepted. Please note the earlier start time (5:00 pm) to allow

for on-the-water time if weather permits. Prerequisite:

Light Air Rating.

Classes are open to ANY interested participants

(Members and Non-Members welcome).

MCSC reserves the right to cancel or change

teer Instructors? We would love to have you! If you are Me-

dium Air Rated for a year or more and would like to help

teach our new students, please plan to attend this two-session

training. New VI’s should also attend the April 23 session.

We will continue training for our New Volunteer Instructors

and refresh our expectations for our Returning Volunteers in

this two-hour class. We will review specific teaching meth-

ods, outlines for scheduled sessions, emergency guidelines,

good practices and hand out the 2015 schedule.

January 21st

The Coast Guard Among Us with Coast Guard ENS Thomas Morrell

Join us for an informational session from Milwaukee’s own Coast Guardsman: ENS Tom Morrell. ENS Morrell is from Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan and he will be speaking about the United States Coast Guard on Lake Michigan. Some of the topics will include the history of the Coast Guard on Lake Michigan and their roles and responsibilities. He will also talk about the local community involvement, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, upcoming winter safety and of course, near and dear to all of our hearts, recreational boating safety and hazards on Lake Michigan. Bring your questions for this fun and informative session.

The Lady Elgin with Historian Carl Baehr

Author and historian Carl Baehr will cover the events that led up to 300 Milwaukeeans taking an excursion on the Lady Elgin on September 6

th in 1860. The beautiful steamship, the Lady Elgin, sank two days later on September 8

th. Carl

Baehr will talk about the aftermath, the victims and the survivors. Baehr is also the author of “Milwaukee Streets: The Stories Behind their Names,” and other historical articles. He is currently researching and writing “Dreams and Disasters: A History of the Irish in Milwaukee.”

March 18th

The America’s Cup with Harken

During the 34th America’s Cup in September of 2013, the engineering team at Harken extended their already comprehen-

sive involvement with the Cup by having a member of the staff permanently embedded in the Defender Camp! Pewau-kee’s own Harken Yacht Fittings had a front row seat because they supplied much of the boat hardware, blocks, winches and other parts on the America’s Cup boats. Harken also supplied the hydraulics on the incredible Emirates Team New Zealand boat. Listen to first-hand accounts of the “winner take all” final races in the America’s Cup race, between Oracle Team USA and Emirates Team New Zealand from people who were there and helped make these boats fly through the course at speeds up to 55 mph!!!

The Golden Age of Sail - Lake Michigan Schooners

Join Suzette Lopez and Connie Behrens-Huffstetter for a unique look at the Golden Age of Sail. This program hopes to recapture an important period in our maritime past celebrating the golden age of sail. The schooners off the coast of northern Wisconsin and the Great Lakes were unique and truly an important piece of sailing history. Learn about these schooners and hear many other stories of our Great Lake’s majestic ships. Here are just a couple of the stories included: The Lake Forest built in 1869, was one of six schooners built at Little Sturgeon, Wisconsin. She had a long life span-ning some 40 years which included several incidents including hitting a reef just south of North Point in Lake Michigan The Halstead was built in 1873, also at Little Sturgeon Bay. She was a fast and able vessel. In November 1873, she made the round trip between Milwaukee and Buffalo in 11 ½ days. The 171-foot schooner had an adventurous life. Suzette J. Lopez has been the caretaker of the Great Lakes Marine Collection since 1982 and is also the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society. Connie Behrens-Huffstetter is the Milwaukee Public Library’s librarian liaison to the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society and reference librarian.
