About the Music - - -

Originally written for the C.W. Post Wind Ensemble, Ascension was transcribed for StringOrchestra in 2007, and dedicated to Michael Lewis Fallacaro, who was the Principal Clarinetistof the C.W. Post Wind Ensemble. At 22 years of age and one semester away from graduation,his life was taken in a tragic car accident.

C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University is located on the North Shore of Long Island,New York, 30 miles east of New York City. With 235 degree programs, C. W. Post has achievednational recognition for its contemporary and cooperative approach to education. It is also recognizedas one of the nation’s most beautiful college campuses.

To the Conductor - - -

The contrapuntal nature of Ascension requires that balance be achieved among all sections,particularly where there is a great deal of transparency (solis ms. 37-48). The cello solo at ms. 24-36 should be played freely and with expression . Similarly, the broad chorale-like setting allows fora great deal of latitude of expression that can be explored at each playing.

About the Composer - - -

Carl Strommen is an award-winning ASCAP composer and arranger who makes his home onLong Island, New York. He is a member of the adjunct faculty at the C. W. Post Campus of LongIsland University, where he teaches orchestration and composition.

About the Editor.... Robin Maddox is the director of the Herricks (New Hyde Park, NY) High School Concertand Chamber orchestras. A graduate of Queens College and The City College of New York,Mrs. Maddox performs with the lyrical String Quartet and maintains an active private violinstudio.

Ascension was recorded by the Herricks Chamber orchestra.
