Generally speak- ing, there are three types of reaction to insect venom — normal, localized, and allergic. Many people believe they are allergic to bee or wasp stings, confusing normal or localized reaction with allergic reaction. The truth is that severe allergic reaction to stings is quite rare. A normal sting reaction is indicated by pain, swelling, and redness around the place of the sting. A localized reaction is marked by swelling beyond the site of the sting — a sting on a finger may cause the entire hand to swell. Often people believe themselves to be “high- ly allergic” to bee stings when they experience a localized reaction. A localized reaction, however severe its symptoms, is not an allergic or immune reaction, and its symptoms are nothing over which to be overly concerned. Have high expectations

In the book “Steve Jobs’ Lifeby Design” the author,George Beahm, describes

Jobs’ devout interest in theJapanese culture and how Jap-anese consumers demand qual-ity electronics. This led me towonder if Americans have thesame high expectations fortheir health care.

As consumers, patientsshould expect only the bestfrom their health care provid-ers and from themselves.Health care providers shouldlook for new and more effec-tive ways to prevent and treatillness; and patients shouldunderstand their roles andresponsibilities in stayinghealthy. On each side, we needto have high expectations. Weshould work with our healthcare providers to create a foun-dation for a healthy life and weshould change the lifestylechoices we make that result in

A critical issue in startingand sticking with a reg-ular exercise program is

maintaining motivation. Onefactor in maintaining motiva-tion is having information tomeasure your progress. This isa key role of a heart rate mon-itor.

A heart rate monitor allowsyou to determine what yourheart rate is at any given timeand a reasonably sophisticatedmodel can tell you how muchtime you spend at various heartrates, called “zones.” You canget one at almost any sportsstore for as low as $25, but thatmodel won’t tell you how muchtime you spend in differentheart rate zones. A more ad-vanced model costs about $75.It will tell your current andaverage heart rate, time spentat various heart rates, calories

When’s the lasttime you com-pletely un-plugged?

Yep, thatmeans sayingno to your

phone, computer and television.Hard to remember, right?

We feel a hole in our lives whenour smartphone dies, we getticked when our Wi-Fi goes down, and our plans are shattered whenthe DVR backfires. There’s sim-ply no denying it: We are crea-tures of technology. The goodnews? There’s still time to dosomething about it.

A recent study from Nielsenreports that adults spend a whop-ping 11 hours per day with digitalmedia. Which means, on average, that we interface with a screenmore often than we sleep or inter-

There is a reason Flor-ida has earned thenickname The Sun-

shine State. We can al-most always count onhaving a beautiful dayhere in paradise. Be-cause of this, we spendmuch of our time at thebeach, boating, on thegolf course, gardening ordoing various other out-door activities.

Studies have shownthat unprotected sunexposure can cause long-term damage to the skinand eyes regardless ofage.

Ultraviolet (UV) radi-ation is invisible raysthat are a part of theenergy that comes fromthe sun. Depletion of theozone layer decreasesthe earth’s natural pro-tection from the sun’sharmful UV rays. Inaddition to skin cancerand premature aging, theUV rays can cause orexacerbate certain typesof eye disease, such as:

» Photokeratitis or“sunburned eye” affectsthe cornea and/or con-junctiva. Direct sunlight, glare from the sun’s re-flection on water or sand,or artificial UV (e.g.tanning beds, arc weld-ing) can cause this condi-tion resulting in pain andblurred vision.

» Pterygium: A growththat starts on the whitepart of the eye but caninvolve the cornea caus-ing decreased vision oreye irritation.

» Cataract: The cloud-ing of the natural lens ofthe eye that can causeblurred vision.

» Macular degener-ation or macular damage— Deterioration of thecentral retina that canlead to permanent cen-tral vision loss.

» Squamous lesions:Tumors that can grow oneyelids, cornea, or con-junctiva that can causetissue damage or blind-ness. The eyes and sur-rounding skin are partic-ularly susceptible tocancers due to theirfragile, thin structures.

There are many in-expensive options thatcan help protect eyes:

» Wear sunglasses:Choosing sunglasses thatfilter out 99-100 percentof UV rays can greatlyreduce the risk of dam-age to the eyes. Polarizedlenses can also be helpful

in reducing glare. Makesure they fit correctly sothat they protect youreyes and the surroundingstructures.

Wear sunglasses out-doors even on cloudydays — UV rays arepresent even when it isovercast. Make sure tokeep a spare pair in caseone is lost or broken.

» Use sunscreen:

Choose a sunscreen ormoisturizer speciallyformulated for usearound the eyes thatcontains SPF (sun pro-tection factor) of 15 ormore and use it daily. When out in the sun or inthe water, make sure toreapply frequently.

» Wear a hat: A wide-brimmed hat can greatlyshield the face and eyes

from the sun.» Avoid midday sun:

The sun’s strongest UVrays are at their strong-est in the late morningand early afternoon.

» Be aware of medica-tions that can causephotosensitivity: Askyour doctor if you aretaking any medicationthat causes increasedphotosensitivity.

Please visit our web-site at eye.md or visitaao.org for more in-formation about eyedisease and the sun’spotentially harmful ef-fects on your vision.

A severe or systemicallergic reaction, on theother hand, is far moreserious, can be life-threatening, and requiresimmediate medical treat-ment. The symptoms ofsevere allergic reactioncan include impairedbreathing, hives or rashthat extend well beyondthe sting location; swell-ing of the face, mouth, orthroat; a sharp drop inblood pressure and ana-phylactic shock. Thesesymptoms, if not treated, can lead to unconscious-ness and cardiac arrest.People with true allergyto bee stings would bewell advised to carryepinephrine with them atall times.
