In consultation with Dr. Harrison, Giza pulled the reverse shoes and completely corrected the hoof angle to relieve the excessive heal pressure. In 2013, Cedar Lawns Abby, lovingly known as Abby, was diagnosed with chronic subluxation of the coffin bone in her right front hoof and severe ringbone in her left front hoof (see photos A and B). A previous farrier had been using reversed metal horse shoes in an attempt to give her some relief (see photos C1-C3). Dr. Harrison had been injecting the right coffin joint in an attempt to give some stability to the foot and fuse the joint. EASY’S SLIPPER SOLUTION: Modified Open Bottom Rocker

In her past life, Abby was her owners prize show jumper and then passed down to their children for their jumping careers. As a very special member of the family, the owners were willing to do anything to keep her alive. However, after seeing how much pain and discomfort Abby was in, they thought putting her down might be the best course of action.

MODIFIED EASY’S SLIPPERS SAVE ABBY’S LIFE

Luckily, Dr. Harrison contacted Dave Giza of Genesis Farriers who arrived May, 2015 with Easy’s Slippers® just in time. In consultation with Dr. Harrison, Giza pulled the reverse

shoes and completely corrected the hoof angle to relieve the excessive heal pressure. This realigned the short pastern bone (P2) with the coffin bone (P3) and made the coffin bone (P3) parallel to the ground surface (see photo D).

In 2013, Cedar Lawns Abby, lovingly known as Abby, was diagnosed with chronic subluxation of the coffin bone in

her right front hoof and severe ringbone in her left front hoof (see photos A and B). A previous farrier had been using

reversed metal horse shoes in an attempt to give her some relief (see photos C1-C3). Dr. Harrison had been injecting

the right coffin joint in an attempt to give some stability to the foot and fuse the joint.

“The reverse shoeing was not helping Abby,” said Giza. “She was immobile and listless. I knew we needed to get her comfortable fast to give her any sort of quality of life.”

After adjusting the hoof, Giza applied size two, long Easy’s Slippers, which he modified on site with a wedge to support the hoof (see photo E). The slippers built in rockered toe increased the breakover and gave Abby the ability to move.

Since being shod in Easy’s Slippers, she is pasture sound and turned out with the herd. Easy’s Slipper gives her the ability to move and flex her feet; movement delivers more oxygen and blood flow and she feels better. After six months, Giza continues the same protocol he created for her, an Easy’s Slipper Open Bottom Rocker on the front right hoof with a custom-ized wedge. The left front hoof is now in an Easy’s Slipper Open Bottom Rocker with no modifications for winter protection.

Everyone involved with Abby, her caregivers, owners, Dr. Harrison, Giza and the whole Easy’s Slipper team, are thrilled with her outcome.
