Hello!Hey everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m both Adolfo Chavez III & Killy. I am the Digital Asset Program Manager at MD Anderson Cancer Center and photographer and owner of Killy Photography. My focus is primarily medical lifestyle, editorial portraiture, and event photography.
2017 was a great year for Killy Photography. I started off by moving my business out of the house and into it’s first office/studio space. What a relief to finally regain space in my home for living and not working! This has not only helped me finding a new balance between my work lives and my home life, but it’s also opened up a lot of opportunities.
Most importantly, it allows me to have a place from where I can work to build a community among my clients and colleagues. I use my cool, new space as a small photo studio and a comfortable spot to host friends and colleagues for photo critiques and other meetups!
Another big highlight of early 2017 was Super Bowl LI, which brought weeks of events and parties to Houston. Throughout the year, galas and social events kept my evenings occupied. Then, in a devastating blow to Houston, Hurricane Harvey struck. Thankfully, my family was spared any flood damage, but many in my community were not so lucky. Despite the hard hit we all took, the city and projects soldiered on and took the World Series!
I’d like to say thank you to all who trust me to do your photography. Whether you are a client, a friend, or a colleague, I cannot do what I do without you. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you! With your help, I’m looking forward to an even more exciting and productive 2018!

MD Anderson Cancer CenterAs a Program Manager at MD Anderson Cancer Center, I’ve been fortunate enough to create brand-appropriate imagery for the last five years shaping the message of what we do for those living with cancer. I create images for Comunications, Development and Marketing projects.
A few years ago I lost my niece, Dezma, to cancer, so this is a very personal undertaking for me. I put everything I am into the images I create for MD Anderson. I know that the people who visit our website, read our materials, and engage with our social media channels are looking intently at what we do and - just as important - HOW we do it.
I have had the opportunity to photograph the people who are on the front lines of cancer treatment and those who work in the background doing the groundbreaking research that fuels incredible discoveries EVERY SINGLE DAY. I’ve also been privileged to photograph the brave people who graciously bear the burden of caring for those on the cancer journey.
This golf shot was part of a partnership wtih TopGolf. I was approached to sit in at a meeting to brainstorm some visual ideas for a sun safety campaign. The resulting images drove home a simple, but powerful sun safety message!

Editorial Portraits
My first love is photographing people. I’ve had some wonderful opportunities this year to photograph some pretty interesting faces.
I did some model testing this year
with Neal Hamil model Alishah
Velani. We ended up with some really
striking images!
Paytech magazine called me to
photograph a payroll professional
at Johnson Space Center. The final
cover shot was in front of the space
shuttle!
An annual pro-bono photo shoot for
Child Protective Services (CPS) is one
of my favorite of the year. This year,
the children were photographed in
front of red backdrop which resulted
in some really fun and dynamic
portraits of the kids.
Local writer Sara Cress inspire me to
create some images for her project
“Breaking Poems”, a book of poetry
based on real headlines. We had so
much fun creating the screaming
newsaper portrait, we thought, “Well,
I guess we should put you in the
banana costume now!”

Hurricane Harvey

CenterPoint EnergyHurricane Harvey hit Houston ... hard. Every single community was impacted. Personally, I was lucky enough to escape damage to my home, but many in Houston were not so lucky. I had the opportunity to see the damage first hand while on assignment. I was contacted by the CenterPoint Energy social media team and asked to capture the efforts of their repair teams as they responded to impacted areas.
Events
Noble Engery SuperBowl event
Client: Noble EnergyHouston was electric with SuperBowl
fever! I was contacted to provide
photos of their downtown destination
tent which included a number of
art installations and famiy friendly
activities. I spent two days shooting
both the installation and grand
opening party! This photo of Noble
Enegy staff making slime with the
kids was one of my favorites of the
year!
Event PhotographyI have been photographing corporate events, parties, galas and other social events in and around Houston for over 5 years. Killy Photography has provided event photography across every industry, including Real Estate, Oil & Gas, and Healthcare.
Client: Texas Society of Architects
I have been photographing the annual Texas Architecture Conference and Design Expo
for the last four years and every year come away with great images for my client. This
year’s speaker line-up included a presentation on “HIP HOP ARCHITECTURE” given by
Michael Ford which was as eye-opening as it was inspiring!
Client: Inspire Women
Another client with whom I have worked for many years is Inspire Women. This faith
organization works to empower and help women find their spark and follow their
God-given calling. Every year, the images we create help to further their mission and
ministry.
Professional development
Critique Night, January 2018 at the office of Killy Photography
Professional DevelopmentThis year I attended a lighting and modeling class taught by the esteemed Nino Batista. I learned a lot about working with experienced models. Most of the people who find their way in front of my camera are ‘regular’ people, so this was a VERY different, but enlightening, experience!
To help me develop my business, I drove to San Antonio to attend a marketing and development presentation given by editorial photographer Josh Huskin. His presentation gave me insights into how to work with editors on editorial assignments as well as some guidelines for pricing and marketing techniques.
But it isn’t all classes and workshops — I learn most by DOING, so I try to keep myself as engaged and busy as my schedule will allow! I serve as the current Vice President of the Houston chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP.) I have spent the past year coordinating speakers and other educational events for the Houston photographic community.
Additionally, Killy Photography hosts a monthly ‘Critique Night’ at my office. This gives photographers (and myself!) the opportunity to present their work to a group of peers for review and constructive criticism. Being able to listen to criticism is key to growing and improving!
Pratik Naik teaches advanced retouching techniques at an ASMP workshop in July, 2017
I am always on the hunt for an opportunity to grow professionally and personally. I am also a big believer in building community by reaching out and nurturing
relationships among my colleages.
Equipment
Jay Berrones, collage artist, photographed with Elinchrom D-Lites
After a lot of research, I fully bought in to the Elinchrom lighting system. While this may not immediately mean much to many of my clients, for me there’s a very real benefit to the quality of my images and the efficiency of my workflow.
Being able to reliably control light from one point and work within one ecosystem makes shooting quicker and easier. It allows me to focus my time and energy on making great images and less on fumbling with equipment.
As important as lighting is, it wasn’t the most impactful piece of equipment I picked up this year — it was a camera strap! More specifically, the HoldFast MoneyMaker camera strap.
Shooting for hours at a time with a camera in my hand and a camera bag hanging off my shoulder is so fatiguing! The HoldFast strap is a discreet harness (kinda like a gun holster!) which has allowed me to give my hands a breather every once and a while. It keeps me nimble and flexible at events and allows me to focus on my subjects in the studio and on location.
Why It’s Important (to me)

Working with reliable, high-quality photography equipment. It is key to delivering the high-quality imagery that clients are expecting.
Plans for the Future
Looking AheadOne of the things I look forward to at the end of every year is goal setting.
This has been invaluable to me as
a small business person, a husband
and father. Each year, I set realistic,
attainable goals to further my
business and my personal life. I’ve
got a lot to do this year!
This year, I will be focusing on
marketing and working hard to
acquaint people (like you!) with what
Killy Photography can do. I’ll be
reaching out to as many of you as I
can by working to create additional
promotional materials.
Thanks for taking the time to read
through Killy Photography’s first
newsletter! I hope it’s given you a
better idea of who I am and what I
can do for you or your business.
I’ll be working hard to keep in touch! Adolfo Chavez III / Killy Photography, 2017
