Global Bhatia Foundation (GBF) has taken up an ambitious project of documenting History of the Bhatia Community and second volume in this series was launched on July 25, 2015 at Sundarbai Hall by the distinguished chief guests Shri Kantisen Shroff (Pujya Kakaji), Smt. Sandra Rajjubhai Shroff (of United Phosphorous) and Shri Harsh Mariwala (of MARICO). The launch of the book took place with Saraswati Vandana and lighting of the lamp in presence of prominent members of the community. The research team of the GBF comprised of Dr. Mangala Purandare, Shri Haridas Raigaga and Shri Mukul Asher.

Shri Ashwin Shroff (of Excel Industries), Chairman of GBF welcomed the Chief Guests and the book lovers. The bouquet was presented by Smt. Jyoti Layjawala, Smt. Pallavi Sundhani and Smt. Mohini Negandhi to the chief guests. Shri Bipin Nanavati who came from Chennai and Shri Kirit Shroff who came from Kolkata were warmly welcomed and appreciated for their great help in gathering information for the book.

While introducing the distinguished guests, Shri Ashwin Shroff mentioned that Kakaji, who is 92 years of age has resumed painting and showed his latest work to the audience. Kakaji, apart from shouldering the responsibility of running his family organisations has successfully created several NGOs that have done and are doing great work for the society. Harshbhai represents a family which is an excellent example of living by the “Core Values”, growth continuing through Innovation. He has created a global brand for “MARICO” and its products. He has also created an entrepreneurship development initiative viz. ASCENT, instituted Marico Innovative awards and his latest initiative is to help people suffering from depression. Smt. Sandra, a British by birth, united with a kutchi Bhatia family and together with Rajjubhai, created a global giant “United Phosphorus”. They are generously giving back to the society.

Prof. Mukul Asher in his brief about the book, mentioned about the effort that has been invested in making this book. He acknowledged all the contributors including Shri Ashok Ashar of Dharangaon, Shri Vijay Ramaiya and Shri Mitesh Paleja of Vaijapur, Shri Kishor Bhatia of Jalgaon, Shri Chandubhai Bhatia of Mahabaleshwar, Shri Sanjay Kapadia of Nasik, Shri Kirit Shroff of Kolkata, Shri Bipin Nanavati of Chennai and several others. He praised the methodology and process of presenting history used by Dr. Mangala Purandare. He explained the efforts of GBF in documenting the achievers, competitiveness in globalisation, Technological advancement, retaining cultural and other identities, traditions, study of neglected history. The GBF team has been a focal point and rest have provided GBF with the information. A specific focus of the book is on the “Prospects

Launching of “History of the Bhatia Community: Volume-II”

and Challenges”, a separate chapter allocated to the present generation. (Bhatias in South India have done better than East India due to different government machinery in these 2 regions. Family business is core of our strength. German and US industries were established by the families. Some initiatives are needed to expand skill sets, large assets from the ancestors need to be protected, maintained and made productive. Balance sheet of the Bhatia community should include new values like respect for the environment and make the assets more productive. Wealth of the community is not measured by what it can buy but what it can make. Parsis, Jews, Chettiars, Sindhis are the critical mass and these communities have taken lead to create wealth. Efforts of GBF are afoot to repeat it for the Bhatia community.)

Kakaji opted to speak in kutchi language and considered himself fortunate to be a part of this event. He said “It is God's wish that we met together”. He mentioned that members of the Bhatia community have travelled very widely across the globe and carried out great deeds for the society. It is the values, behaviour, conduct (Aachar) that has made us successful. He was taught such values from his childhood. The hand of the Bhatia is always up for giving (donate) and never for receiving. Bhatia means lion, never became a yes-man, never bow down to others, feel very proud to be a Bhatia.

Shri Harshbhai congratulated the founders of Global Bhatia Foundation for its great efforts and initiations to unite the community. The book captures contributors of the families of Bhatia community. He mentioned that each one has to think “what is the purpose of one's life?”. God has given a gift of life and all do not realise it. Improving upon weaknesses is 25% of effort and 75% of effort has to go for improving the strengths. Each one of us makes a choice based on one's strength, success is more difficult to handle than failures, certain degree of balance in life is a must. Handle success in a mature manner and retain balance, do not become egoistic. If you want to succeed, failure is a must, risk taking is a must. Concentrate on 3-4 matters and not too many. Two important days are (1) The day I was born and (2) Search for why I was born. What can one do to make this world a better place to live.

Smt. Sandra Shroff spoke about great glory of Kutchi Bhatias and appreciated Global Bhatia Foundation. She has great praise for the Bhatia community who has whole-heartedly accepted her. She mentioned her observation that this community never had a dowry system and the girl is accepted by the in-laws’ family after marriage with only 6 saris from her parents. This is an amazing community. Rajjubhai's nana went to Zanzibar and earned a fortune which he spent in Kutch for the welfare of Kutch. They had a will to do

something in life and succeed. Bhatias are straight forward and not 'Fly by night operator'. They are smart businessmen, they take care of community, have established many institutions. Khimji Ramdas is one such family from Mandvi kutch. Embrodery of Kutch is beautiful. All that would have been lost if that art is not preserved and encouraged. Kakaji and Kaki have done it

through Shrujan.

Shri Nitin Dossa thanked everyone for making the event a big success with special thanks to the trustees of Hansraj Pragji Thackersey Trust and Shri Chandrsen Merchant. He offered an Honorary Doctorate to Shri Haridas Raigaga for his efforts to coordinate the GBF project.

The maritime riches of the Kutch region

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will, on April 6, release a book brought out jointly by National Museum of India and Gujarat-based Darshak Itihas Nidhi on maritime navigation techniques of the people of Kutch, Gujarat.

The treatise, “Maalam ni Pothi,” is a record of stars and clouds, winds and waves, changing colour of water, storms and ominously calm waters, birds and fish, depths and distances over the centuries by navigators of Kutch (Kachchh). When there were no instruments to guide the sail ships, the navigator discovered his own indicators and guided the course of the ship. The accumulated knowledge thus collected by malams (navigators) is enormous, said Hasmukh Shah, Chairman of the Nidhi.Contains over 900 pages

The pothis written by malams in old Gujarati script and old Kachchhi language for each of their voyages were collected by National Museum. The knowledge remained hidden since deciphering the script and reading of language could not be done by scholars from India and abroad.

Darshak Itihas Nidhi got it done by a language expert and historian, Ashok Rajeshirke, who has interpreted the text in - VIRENDRA PANDIT

his introduction. The facsimile and its Devanagari transcription in the volume run into over 900 pages. Of the selected pothis, the oldest is dated back to 1665. An accompanying booklet by historian Chhaya Goswami is a short treatise on the volume that further explains contents and rationale of pothis included in the volume.

Sustained voyages and enduring contacts with the sea and its milieu made the mariners of the Gulf of Kachchh to develop a rich, deep understanding and knowledge of the sea. They acquired knowledge about astronomy, astrology, Vaastu, marine biology, zoology and navigational sciences using celestial reference.

Multifaceted seamenThe content of the pothis portrays them as multifaceted seamen, explorers, naturalists, hydrographers, writers and mariners. It, thus, highlights several significant contributions of these malams made to science of navigation, seamanship, language, and literature, Shah pointed out. Studies and researches in history, more importantly the maritime history of India, would get a fillip with this book, he said.

Gayatri Mantra the Best Divine Prayer Hymn in the World

Dr. Howard Steingeril, an American scientist, collected Mantras, Hymns and invocations from all over the world and from all religions, tested their strength in his Physiology Laboratory. He concluded that the Hindus Vedic Gayatri Mantra is the most rewarding scientifically. That the Gayatri Mantra produced 110,000 sound waves per second. This was the highest and found it to be the most powerful prayer hymn in the world. That the combination of sound and variation in the sound waves and its particular frequency is capable of developing specific spiritual potentialities.

The Hamburg university initiated this research into the efficacy of the Gayathri Mantra both on the mental and physical plane of CREATION. The GAYATHRI MANTRA is now being broadcast daily for 15 minutes from 7 P.M. onwards over Radio Paramaribo, Surinam, South America for the past two years, and also in Amsterdam, Holland for the last six months.

Bela Bajaria Appointed President of Universal Television, Becomes the Highest Ranking Indian American

Executive in Hollywood

Bela Bajaria, who was promoted to President of Universal Television last month, has become the highest ranking Indian American in Hollywood, the entertainment industry in the United States.

"Bela has done an incredible job of starting a studio from scratch three years ago and launching a series of hits on programming services ranging from NBC and Fox to A&E and Netflix," said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. "This business is very important to the overall performance at NBC Entertainment."

Jennifer Salke, President of NBC Entertainment who also oversees Universal Television, added: "We're very happy that Bela is going to continue to run the studio at a time when the demand for American television shows keeps growing in this country and around the world."

Bajaria was Miss India USA and Miss India Worldwide 1991.

Previously, Bajaria was Executive Vice President of Universal Television since August 2011. Her appointment as the head of the NBCUniversal-owned television production company began the re-establishment of the studio as a stand-alone entity after its creative programming division was folded into the NBC network in 2008.

Bajaria oversees creative programming for one of the country's largest and most successful television studios which is responsible for hit primetime series across numerous networks, including "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Parks and Recreation," "The Mindy Project," "Bates Motel," "About A Boy," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Grimm," "Chicago Fire," "Chicago PD," "State of Affairs" and "Parenthood." The studio also produces such new series as "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," "Allegiance," and "Odyssey," as well as the limited series "The Slap" and "Heroes Reborn," among other projects, according to Universal Television website.

Earlier, Bajaria held two key posts simultaneously: Senior Vice President, Cable Programming for CBS TV Studios, and Senior Vice President of Movies and Miniseries for the CBS network. Upon creating the cable division at CBS TV Studios in 2007, she shepherded many cable dramas and comedies from prolific writer/directors, including a docu-comedy for Showtime that was produced by Glenn Gordon Caron, "Common Law," and "Panic Boys" for Showtime. Bill Gates

Bill Gates boasts a net worth of $78.9 billion. Microsoft's co-founder also has a 66,000-square-foot lakeside house in Washington state — complete with a pool that has its own underwater music system.

But the richest man in the world says he has no use for money beyond a certain point.

And he means it.

Gates has already donated $28 billion since 2007 to eradicate deadly diseases around the world. He also hopes to double investment in renewable technology in the next five years.

He's not alone. Once the super rich have made their billions, they often start trying to save the world.

So what could possibly be driving some of these most powerful people on Earth to make the world a better place for future generations?

A new study, led by University of Michigan's Leigh Plunkett Tost, suggests that, contrary to popular belief, power doesn't corrupt — it makes you more generous.

"Previous research focusing on the relationship between contemporaries found that having power tends to cause people to act in more self-interested ways," co-author and Duke associate professor Kimberly Wade-Benzoni said in a press release. "We add the dimension of time, and we find in contrast that power leads people to act more generously toward future generations."

The researchers reached those conclusions through a series of experiments.

In the first experiment, 222 participants were randomly assigned high-power and low-power status with the help of a writing task. The former were required to recall a situation in which they had power over others; the latter wrote about an episode in which they lacked power.

Just when the subjects thought their job was over, they were presented with an opportunity to enter a lottery as a reward and donate their winnings to a food charity program in two ways: they could either give away their money to feed the poor immediately or contribute towards long-term

structural reform in the food supply system.

The results were startling. Those who held more power over others were more likely to choose future reform over immediate relief to fix the hunger problem.

In a similar experiment, 465 people could choose between keeping a $1,000 bonus for themselves now or a larger amount a year later. Alternatively, they were free to give the money to another person now or a larger amount to someone later. Those who had more power were found to be more likely to part with the bonus for future use.

Of course, these experiments can't account for lifelong behaviors, but they do suggest that the responsibility to shape the future compels the power holder to think long-term.

But what purpose will the findings serve outside the lab?

"Organizations seeking to ensure that decision makers consider the long-term impact of their decisions should consider highlighting that those with decision-making authority have the power to shape not only their own current performance, but also the performance and outcomes of the generations to come," Wade-Benzoni said.

In other words, those in positions of power would make better future-friendly decisions if organizations invoked a sense of responsibility towards younger generations.

And if Gates' example is anything to go by, Wade-Benzoni might have a point.

Harshavardhan

Harshavardhana was an Indian Emperor, who ruled over the northern parts of India for a period of more than forty years. His empire was spread over the states of Punjab, Bengal, Orissa and the entire Indo-Gangetic plain, lying to the north of the Narmada River. Get more information of the life history of King Harshavardhan with this biography :

King Harshavardhana was born in 590 AD to Prabhakar Vardhan. His elder brother was Rajyavardhan, the king of Thanesar. He was instrumental in consolidating the small republics and small monarchical states that had sprung up in North India after the downfall of the Gupta dynasty. Harsha Vardhan united the small republics from Punjab to Central India and they accepted him as their king in 606 AD. Though Harsha was only sixteen years old when he ascended the throne, he proved himself to be a great vanquisher as well as a competent administrator.

After his accession, King Harshavardhan united the two kingdoms of Thanesar (now Kurukshetra) and Kannauj. He also shifted his capital from Thanesar to Kannauj. The next aggression faced by the king was from Sasanka, the ruler of Bengal. He defeated Sasanka and also took over Eastern Punjab (present day Haryana), Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Thereafter, he occupied Dhruvasena and Ganjam, a part of the modern Orissa State. In 630 AD, Harshavardhana faced defeat at the hands of Pulakesi II, the Chalukya King of Vatapi, in Northern Karnataka. The defeat resulted in a truce between the two kings, with Harsha accepting River Narmada as the southern boundary for his kingdom.

Patronizing Buddhism and Literature

King Harshavardhan was a Shaivite. However, he was tolerant towards all other religions and supported them fully. Some time later in his life, he became a patron of Buddhism also. King Harshavardhana propagated the religion by constructing numerous stupas in the name of Buddha. He believed in supporting art and

literature and even made several donations to the Nalanda University. Harsha Vardhana also wrote three Sanskrit plays, namely Nagananda, Ratnavali and Priyadarsika. In 641 AD, he sent a mission to China, which helped in establishing the first diplomatic relations between China and India.

Death of Harshavardhana

King Harshavardhana left for the holy abode in the year 647 AD, after ruling over the Indian subcontinent for more than 41 years. However, since he did not have any heirs, his empire rapidly disintegrated and collapsed into small states again.

Harsha was a noted author on his own merit. He wrote three plays – Nagananda, Ratnavali and Priyadarsika. His reign is comparatively well documented, thanks to his court poet Bana in Harschacharita and by Si-Yu-Ki. Bana composed an account of Harsha's rise to power in Harsha Charitha, the first historical poetic work in Sanskrit language. Xuanzang wrote a full description of his travels in India.
