If anyone wants an accurate picture of how difficult it can be to make ends meet on a fixed income, just ask Clyde.

“It’s a balancing act,” he says. “Like walking across a tightrope over Niagara Falls.”

The retired senior visits Action Ministries, one of our partner agencies, every month. Clyde is diabetic but he cannot afford the food he needs to stay healthy after paying for all his bills and medications.

Thousands of neighbors in our community are just like Clyde. Seniors who skip meals to pay their medical

bills. Parents who work multiple part- time jobs to pay the rent. And kids who go home after school and don’t have consistent access to food.

It’s all too common, and that’s why your continued support is so important in 2019. A gift today to Freestore Foodbank would help provide more meals across the 20 counties we serve in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Cooking her way to a positive path Cassidy is a recent graduate of our Cincinnati COOKS! program. The single mom shared her story about her background and how she’s hoping to build a better future for her family.

The Cincinnati COOKS! program has been amazing. It’s been everything I could ever want and need from something. My motivation is my kids. I want to make my kids proud and show them I can do something.

I came from a really broken background. I didn’t have any role models growing up and I had to fend for myself. For my kids, I want to be everything that I didn’t have and flip that into a positive story. I want them to say, “My mom did that.”

Learning lessons beyond the kitchenFinding Cincinnati COOKS! gave me the support

and drive that I lacked in my life. I’m a very independent person, but here I’ve had to learn how to depend on the other people in the program—it’s a lot of teamwork and team building. I also learned how to cut up a whole chicken, something I never thought I’d be able to do.

I plan to keep going and do the Second Course program, which focuses on fine dining and catering.

More and more seniors are raising their grandkids, just like Nadine. Stretching a fixed income to support multiple family members has become incredibly difficult and stressful. Nadine retired from her job at Wal-Mart, ready to enjoy the next chapter of life with her husband.

Sadly, just four short months later, Nadine’s husband passed away. She started volunteering at Brighton Center, a partner agency of Freestore Foodbank. She liked getting out of the house and talking with the people she helped.

Eventually, Nadine would need help with food herself. Two of her teenage granddaughters came to live with her. One had a baby, so Nadine was trying to stretch her fixed income across two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Nadine says making ends meet each month is a challenge, but she’s learned how to use every ingredient she receives.

John Isidor and Sandy Kaltman have been exceptionally generous in their longtime support of Freestore Foodbank and, through their support, have provided food, connection and hope to thousands of our neighbors.

“My parents survived a concentration camp where they faced extreme hunger,” said Sandy. “We have the blessing of being able to make donations to address this most basic need.”

John’s career began as a teacher in an inner-city school while Sandy worked in nursing. Later, they both worked as attorneys. Their professional experiences cultivated a strong interest in social justice with a special focus on returning citizens and the wrongfully incarcerated.

“Frank Gerson, founder of Freestore Foodbank, was a friend so I’ve known Freestore Foodbank since its inception,” said John. “As the mission expanded beyond food delivery to job training and giving people second chances to rebuild their lives, both Sandy and I came to the realization of how valuable and critical the organization’s work is.”

John and Sandy’s philanthropy is essential to ensuring Freestore Foodbank has the resources to fulfill its mission. In addition to their annual giving, the couple has also included a bequest in their estate planning. Their planned gift will provide for long-term support of Freestore Foodbank’s efforts to provide emergency food assistance alongside workforce development and wrap-around services that build stability and reduce hunger.

We distributed more than 27 million meals through your support—that is pretty amazing! Not only are more families in need getting food on their tables, we are distributing healthier foods, which in turn makes our communities healthier. With programs like LIFT the TriState and Cincinnati COOKS!, your generosity helps provide the holistic support neighbors experiencing hunger need to stabilize their lives and build brighter futures.

Through your support over the last year, you’ve increased our ability to go directly into the neighborhoods where children, families and seniors are struggling. We know there are transportation issues or childcare issues that can prevent people from coming to one of our partner agencies when they need food. More and more, our neighbors don’t have to come to us because of programs like Healthy Harvest Mobile Market and Mobile Produce Pop Ups. We can meet the need wherever it is—thanks to you.

As 2019 begins and my term as board chair comes to a close, I want to say how much I appreciate the support and vision of the board and staff at Freestore Foodbank and the commitment from our donors, volunteers and community partners.

CONNECTION FOR TOMORROWHunger is only one symptom of the larger problem of poverty. After 47 years serving

the tristate, Freestore Foodbank understands that providing emergency food offers only temporary relief. To address the underlying issue of poverty, we offer holistic, wrap- around support to help families build stability and self-reliance at our Over-the-Rhine Customer Connection Center. This critical community resource is supported in part by grants from the Apartment Association Outreach, Inc., Thomas J. Emery Memorial, Ohio Association of Foodbanks, Rosenthal Family Foundation, SC Ministry Foundation, Harold C. Food benefits like SNAP cannot be used to purchase necessities like toilet paper, soap, diapers and feminine products, so families with limited resources may be forced to choose between paying bills and purchasing these critical items. Support from the P&G Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation helps Freestore Foodbank offer essential health and hygiene items for local families. These items not only ensure our neighbors in need have the opportunity to feel comfortable, but hygiene items are critical to building well-being and a foundation to thrive.

HOPE FOR A LIFETIMEMost of the individuals we see at our Customer Connection Center struggle to find full-time

employment. Barriers to employment include a lack of education or training, previous incarceration, or challenges with transportation and housing. Freestore Foodbank offers two workforce development programs, Cincinnati COOKS! and LIFT the TriState, that provide essential job training in the high-demand fields of food service and logistics.

While other organizations offer similar classes, our training is free and provides wrap-around services. In addition, we accept returning citizens and do not require a specific level of stability before acceptance to the program. Instead we work with applicants to improve their stability. Our programs remain the only ones in our region open to individuals of all backgrounds with a focus on formal training and links to accredited institutions rather than on-the-job training.

FOOD FOR TODAYHunger negatively affects a child’s ability to learn, grow and thrive, damaging

their long-term health and educational outcomes. Unfortunately, one in five children in our region may not know where to find their next meal. From birth through graduation, Freestore Foodbank and our network of partner schools, pediatric clinics and childcare sites work to provide the critical nutrition children need to develop and succeed. Our Power Pack program delivered weekend food assistance to 5,200 children every week of the school year thanks to generous donors and grants from 3M Foundation, Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, Ameriprise, William P. Over 273,000 people in our tristate region face hunger. Unfortunately, as food insecurity increases, consumption of fresh produce decreases significantly. Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive, and in too many communities, difficult to access, leading to negative health outcomes for adults, senior citizens and children. Freestore Foodbank is committed to providing more fresh produce to the community, and last year we increased our produce distribution by 36% to 6.5 million pounds! Our community farm, the Giving Fields, delivered healthy vegetables to food pantries in Northern Kentucky with help from the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr./US Bank Foundation, the L&L Nippert Charitable Foundation, Isaac M. Wise Temple and Corteva Agriscience Agriculture Division of DowDuPont,

as well as thousands of volunteers. For families who are financially able to purchase produce but unable to do so because they reside in a food desert, Healthy Harvest Mobile Market, presented by Tri-Health brings at-cost fresh produce and meal-completing packaged items to nine Cincinnati neighborhoods.

A grant from the Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson Foundation and support from the Hunger Walk Virtual Run allowed Freestore Foodbank to help some of our 450 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, schools and social service organizations improve their capacity to distribute produce through grants. For our partners who do not have the space for refrigeration, our new pop-up produce mobile distribution program brought fresh fruit and vegetables to food pantries, schools, clinics and other community sites thanks to grants from the Chemed Foundation, Darden (Feeding America), Hamilton County Community Development Block Grant, H.B., E.W. and F.R. Luther Charitable Foundation, Fifth Third Bank and Narley L. Haley, Co-Trustees, and Nutrien.
