The new Russell Prickly Pear Birdshooter™, fashionedfrom luxurious chocolate brown Timberjack leather, is a triple vampboot, fully lined with patented, wearable Turtleskin® SnakeArmor™,providing maximum protection from snake bites and invasive thorns,(lab tested and certified snake resistant by Jim Harrison of theKentucky Wildlife Zoo). About 20 years ago PH Joof Lamprecht, Hunter’s Namibia Safaris, askedRussell Moccasin to make him a special 14-inch tall boot with a flat sole.Since, they have become “boots de rigueur” in Namibia. Why? Namibia’saggressive Black Hook Thorns shred a hunter’s pants if not tucked into a tall,tough leather boot. The Joof Boot, named in honor of Joof Lamprecht, features a tough toe cap to prevent premature wear, quick lacing studs, a flatVibram® Newporter Sole, a Poron high density foam insert between the layers of leather to soften up the miles and is made from waterproofedWeather Tuff™ leather, (available in two-tone reddish brown & green or allbrown). For its height the Joof Boot is surprisingly lightweight and totallyfunctional for its intended purpose, as attested by one of our Russell peoplewho wore a pair of Joof Boots in Namibia in 2009. They were THE TICKET!

African PH, Paul Stones, who walks more than 1,200 miles per year,requested that we make him a tough boot that would perform in andstand up to the abrasive effect of the heavy thornbush in which hehunts. At Paul’s suggestion Russell designed a boot without an outside molded sole and built using true double vamp construction,(meaning two layers of leather wrap completely around the foot foradded support). The new test boot was made in green waterproofedWeather Tuff™ Leather with brown cotton duck uppers. It features aPoron slipsole, a technical foam layer built in between the two layers ofleather on the bottom of the shoe for improved walking comfort. Backpull straps were added to ease pulling the boots on, brass lacing studsin the top three eyelets for quick lacing, and a padded cushion collartop for comfort around the ankle. The sole is a tough Vibram® Air-Bobsole that features a mildly aggressive tread pattern but is still superquiet. All seams on the bottom of the boot are sealed with Water-Loctape for improved water resistance.

Poron Slipsoles Soften Up Rugged TerrainPoron is a technical foam layer that can be added between the layers of any double vamp Russell boot. Poron does not compress under foot and provides a comfortable cushion for walking long miles over rugged terrain. It does not “movearound” like most slipsoles because it is built into the boot, trapped forever betweentwo layers of leather.

Russell’s Richard Sanders, an avid hunter, designed the original South 40 Birdshooter back in 1984. It went on to become one of our bestsellers. Born of the field for the field. Richard logged well over 6,000 miles chasing birds in his South 40 Birdshooters. About a year agothe originals went missing so we made a replacement pair to his specifications. He wanted to try the improved and upgraded MinimalistCountry Squire Signature South 40 built on the Munson Army Last and equip the boots with the Vibram® Newporter Sole and 1/4 inchwedge. He is wearing them now and loves them.

In 71 days they have seen some tough duty...severaldays dog training in the early morning wet at a Wisconsin game farm, threetrips to South Dakota chasing pheasants...walking in dew, water, mud, cattail sloughs, uneven prairies and hilly country, plus grouse hunting in theWisconsin woods. We are offering two new versions of this popular light 7” boot. An ideal dove, quail and partridge boot for warm and generally dryconditions. Developed in conjunction with input from renounced sports writer, Michael McIntosh, to meet all the criteria of height, weight,coolness, comfort, support, durability, and overall high quality.

The boot on the right features tan lightly oiled mule skinner leather with chocolate elk trim and pull strap. Russell's customers often suggest twists, changes, additions, deletions...or even totally new configurations of boots and shoes.Cam Smith, from Mississippi, is an old-time customer who has had several unique Russell boots made to fit his physical size andhunting terrain.

Cam is a little guy... a former Mississippi State football player...(nearly 7' tall and in a thinned-down tone of only about 300 lbs.).He asked for something special. So, Russell introduces a new variation on our High Country Hunter, the undisputed most popularelk hunting boot in North America...called the “Wapiti Rambler.”

Cam hunts elk in the Black Range Mountain in the Southwest U.S and the Rocky Mountains. The Black Range is normally ahot, dry area. He specd a shorter, lighter weight boot...7-inches high, constructed in a triple vamp configuration for support andwaterproofness from waterproof Weathered Oak Leather and lined with waterproof Aqua Tan leather, with a 1-1/2” padded collar(to keep gravel and stones out of his boots), heel counters for side to side support and Poron slipsole inserts for added comfort.

Cam, who is obviously a BIG MAN and a STRONG MAN,wanted to equip his new boots with a tough, durable Vibram®Sierra sole with Turkey Hunter Wedge lift to give him thesupport he needs while hunting the hot, dry, rocky andsometimes steep Southwest U.S. where he chases big buglingbull elk every year. We also equipped Cam’s new “WapitiRambler’s” with non-glare antique brass eyelets and studs tohelp defeat the Wapiti’s keen eyesight when Cam might besitting on a sidehill calling for amorous bulls in the earlymorning light. Joe’s “PH” has become the favorite variation of Russell’sfamous Safari “PH”. It's made from peanut chamois leatherwith tan canvas inserts and features a comfortable cushioncollar at the top plus a back pull loop to make it easier to pullon. Solid brass lacing studs in the top three eyelets arestandard to speed up morning lacing chores. RUSSELL MOCCASIN OFFERS

Full quill ostrich boots and shoes are gorgeous, no question. But the purchaseprice can get to galloping along pretty quickly as well. For all things, there is areason.

There are about 15 to 16 square feet of leather in an average ostrich skin. Onlyabout 38% of the skin carries the familiar trademark quill marks however. Thequill marks are the pattern formed around the major plumage groups on anostrich. That leaves about 62% of the ostrich skin with no quills whatsoever. Theleather on the no quill portion of the skin or hide, known as belly leather, is justas soft, luxurious and strong as the quilled portion...it just doesn’t offer the cacheof full quill.

So what to do with all of this fine leather? It presents a problem for boot andshoemakers like Russell Moccasin Company. As you might imagine, we accumulate a lot of no quill ostrich after meticulously cutting the quilled portionsto make shoes and boots for customers.

Russell is now offering two of its classic designs, the Art Carter TravelingSportsman Chukka and the Safari “PH” in no-quill ostrich at a substantially lowerprice than our normal ostrich shoes and boots. Available in brown, cognac,black, buttercup and tan. The no-quill versions offer the same lightweight, softsupple ostrich leather...justno quills. These are just alower cost option.

If you have ever yearned for a pair of luxurious ostrich shoes or boots but did-n’t want to spring for the full quill price, here is your chance to lace up a pairand discover the supreme comfort of ostrich footwear.

There comes a time in every shoe and boot maker’s life when you just have tostart asking questions and getting some answers. That’s what Russell President,Ralph Fabricius, and Russell Production Manager, Joe Gonyo did some monthsago.

Both Ralph and Joe were well aware that kangaroo leather has the higheststrength to weight ratio of any leather known to man. Kangaroo is 20% lighterthan cowhide right off the bat. But when split, as all leathers must be before thetanning process to make them usable for making boots and shoes, kangarooleather when split down to only 20% of its original thickness retains 30% to 60% ofits original tensile strength.

This is significant because cowhides...when split to 20% of their original thick-ness...retain only 1% to 4% of their original tensile strength. Kangaroo has 10 times(10X), the tensile strength of cowhide and is 50% stronger than goat hide leather.Yet kangaroo is 20% lighter. Highly desirable attributes for making boots andshoes. Russell’s K-Roo leather imported from The Packer Leather Company inAustralia is fine grained, light weight, flexible, strong and waterproof!

Based on “feet-on-the-ground” testing, Russell is introducing three of its classicdesigns in all kangaroo leather. 1. Art Carter Traveling Sportsman, in double vamp with outside molded sole and

lightweight Aspen Gumlite sole. 2. Safari “PH”, leather lined with canvas or leather uppers, Newporter sole with

1/4” heel lift.3. South 40 Birdshooter, Mahogany Kangaroo, double vamp with outside molded

The Russell Pro-Staff, including numerous well known PH’s, workingwith America’s premier sock manufacturer, has developed a totallyunique line of safari socks that covers the bases from extreme heat tocold temperatures. From strenuous walks covering 15 to 20 miles a dayto lesser activity. Socks are one of the most important pieces of huntinggear you will buy, next to a great pair of custom fitted Russell boots orshoes, a flat shooting rifle and a good pair of binoculars. The Single Vamp illustration shows the basictrue moccasin construction — which is the onlyway a moccasin can be made to be a genuinemoccasin. Note the continuous piece of leather(the vamp) which forms a sort of “hammock” toadjust itself comfortably to the shape of the foot.

The main reason for a double vamp is to keepout water. No moccasin leather boot does a betterjob of this than Russell. Silicone treatments fall farshort because a needle hole is still a hole — andwater will get through. Russell’s double vampconstruction blocks water passage through allneedle holes and seams.

The cut away Triple Vamp clearly illustrates thefoot surrounded by three layers of leather with notwo seams facing one another. Water penetrationis completely blocked. FINEST WATERPROOFED VEALS – They possess two qualitiesseldom found together – substantial weight and fine texture. Chrome-tanned and waterproofed in the tanning, they produce a smooth, clear,tightly grained, pliable leather of exceptional water resisting power.

BLACK AND BROWN WATERPROOFED CHROME – A good gradeof chrome-tanned cowhide. This leather is pliable, firm, andwaterproofed in the tanning.

CALFSKIN – An extremely lightweight, soft and pliable leather formaximum comfort.

GERMAN ELK – A firm, full weight, fine grained cowhide. This leatheris soft, pliable and tough. It is not waterproof, yet, while made primarilyfor dry conditions, it will not become hard and stiff when wet.

KANGAROO LEATHER – Kangaroo leather is extremely tough andhas a high tensile strength for its weight. It is very pliable andcomfortable around the leg.

WEATHER TUFF – Weather Tuff™ is a silicone tanned leather thatmeets all specs and flexes to be considered a true waterproof leather.Stays soft and supple. Low water absorption, breathable, easy to cleanand care for.

AQUA TAN – This has the same characteristics as Weather Tuff™, butsmooth. It is used mostly for waterproof linings.

CHAMOIS – Original oiled Nu-Buck. Full vegetable retannage,generously nourished with additional oils. This gives it a warm oily feeland a beautiful natural look, which has allowed it to become a dresscasual classic. The natural look and comfort get better with time andwear.

CHROMEXCEL – Original pull-up leather dating from 1920. Fullvegetable retanned leather and hot stuffed with a secret blend of naturaloils and greases. Able to withstand repeated wettings and stay dry andsoft. It has unique luster and glows rather than shines.

RUSSELL REPAIR SERVICE – The construction of moccasins is notunderstood in the average repair shop. Therefore, we urge that allRussell repairs be sent to us here at the factory. Our prices are extremelyreasonable.

Hi- I'm writing to let you know just how happy I've been with the Minimalist Thula Thulas I received last Spring. A little more than a year ago, when foot pain had curtailed my running, then finally made it painful and difficult to walk, I went to my doctor. He is a long-time runner and hiker, and it took him only a little poking around to diagnose the problem. I had plantar fascitis exacerbated by scar tissue. Modern shoes and boots, which I believed were offering support, held my feet rigid, causing them to become progressively weaker and stiffer, until I, like so many others it seems, developed this pain. The good doctor prescribed stretches and exercises to break down the scar tissue. He also recommended that I purchase minimalist footwear and work myself up to running as my feet became stronger and more flexible. The alternatives included a splint, a series of shots in my foot, and quite possibly surgery. I chose the first route, and while it has not been easy, and it has sometimes been painful, it has worked. As I became more accustomed to shoes that allowed my feet to move, the question arose: what do I do about hunting? I owned shoes suitable to run on trails, another pair for gym and street use, and moccasins for indoor use. None of these were suitable for hunting, and certainly not for Idaho upland conditions. The hunting boots I owned now felt uncomfortably stiff, my feet hurt in them, and the heel rise caused my back to hurt. Not knowing that an alternative existed, and with a pair of gun dogs who knew nothing of my foot pain, I hunted anyway. My first attempt at a solution was to have my boots modified. This solved the heel lift problem, but they still felt stiff and unforgiving, and my feet still hurt. I hadn't owned Russells in the past, but had been considering an order before putting the idea on hold when my foot problems began. In my search for minimalist boots with grip, water resisitance, and some protection I returned to your website hoping that you could create something that might work. I was excited to learn that, by then, you were already offering a minimalist line, and as I read about the Munson last, I knew that you had started making exactly what I needed. Since we have to work to pay the dogs' mortgage and food bills, it took us awhile to make time to measure my feet. As soon as we did, I sent in an order for all-leather Thula Thulas for all-around outdoor hiking and light-to-medium duty hunting use, shown in the attached snapshot taken yesterday. From the day they arrived, they've exceeded my expectations. Your custom-fit minimalist boots are the best outdoor shoes I have ever put on my feet by a considerable margin. Long hunting excursions or standing for several hours have ceased to be cause for ice and Ibuprofin. When camping, I never got that "got to get out of my boots!" feeling - they were as comfortable as camp slippers. The boots required no break-in, fitting like gloves from day one. In fact, right after they arrived, I left for a week-long dog training trip, where I wore my new boots outdoors all day, every day. As flexible as they are, I had no trouble with hot spots or blisters, something veritably unheard of in a hunting boot. The same was true when I started using them on steep slopes. The Munson Last really does work as you say: it lets my feet move naturally, much like when I'm barefoot. Unlike my feet, the boots protect my feet from sharp rocks and cold snow. SW Idaho terrain can be treacherous, and injured knees and ankles are common. For example, the areas where I hunt Hungarian partridge appear to be smooth, rolling, grass-covered hillsides, but are in fact covered with big chunks of lava rock obscured by short grass. In traditional boots, extreme caution is indicated to avoid injury, since one cannot see the contours of the ground. With a flexible boot, I could feel the uneven, rocky ground under my feet, and could not only walk safely and comfortably, but could even jog without stumbling when my big running dogs had gone on point 150 yards out. These boots may be minimalist, but they have stood up well to some hard use. Because they were the only boots I owned that didn't make my feet hurt, I've worn them for chukar hunting in steep lava rimrock country. The ground here is covered with pea-gravel-sized lava, and hunting chukar requires climbing in boulders, both of which are hard on boots and knees. The boots have held up, and allowed me the agility to avoid injury. Friends and family are accustomed to my expounding as to the wonderful traits of my new boots, but began to chuckle when I informed them that my boots had one more important feature. Training dogs, boots get, well, soiled on occasion. The first time this happened while wearing my new boots, I discovered that the Newporter soles were all clear!

I give my minimalist Thula Thulas 6 stars out of 5. You guys also really helped me figure out another custom boot for situations requiring long off-trail sidehill jaunts along very steep canyon slopes, where the flexibility that makes the Thula Thulas ideal for most conditions can cause fatigue and overuse of foot muscles. The new boot used the Wapati Rambler as a base, but with a sole and midsole from the Thula Thula. We added 2" in height, a toe cap, and boar hide for the molded sole to protect against the aforementioned nasty lava pea gravel. They only arrived recently, but I have had a chance to try them out, hunting and dog training, a few times. These boots are simply amazing. They have minimalist flexibility through the foot, with the triple vamp providing a little more support than the Thula Thula, yet remaining supple, with absolutely amazing ground feel and agility. The overall construction of the boot provides excellent ankle support on sidehills, without any feeling of restriction. Once again, I've found that the minimalist/Munson design is not only very comfortable, but offers agility, balance and confidence that I have never felt in a hunting or hiking boot. My wife eagerly awaits a pair of minimalist Thula Thulas, and this week I plan to order a hot weather variant, so that they arrive in time for the our high desert Summer. To be clear, my wife and I are actually quite thrifty, driving used cars and balking at unnecessary expenses such as restaurants and Starbucks. We choose invest our resources carefully, and Russell minimalist boots have proven to be a worthy investment. I simply don't want to wear anything else on my feet any longer. Thanks to Russell Minimalist boots, I can hunt hard, and really enjoy it, again! Thank you
