The President’s Challenge Ann Hardesty
Theme: Growth in leadership, involvement, and membership
As we look forward we are challenging each member to grow in leadership and involvement within Alpha Xi and our community. Developing leadership and involvement is our emphasis this year. All of you have been selected for Delta Kappa Gamma membership because of being outstanding educators. Alpha Xi would hope to encourage you to extend that excellence beyond the classroom, the group, and into our communities. Leadership and involvement take time and talent. All of you have the talent. The challenge then is to carve out a bit of time to step-up involvement within surrounding communities. May each of you attend Delta Kappa Gamma meetings to hear more about offerings and take advantage of the professional and personal growth possibilities, as well as fellowship with other present and retired educators. Your voice and expertise as educators is needed in Alpha Xi and our communities.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International And
Alpha Iota State History
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an honorary, professional
Society for outstanding women educators with chapters in all fifty states and thirteen other countries. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton introduced the idea of founding “a fraternal women educators” organization.
Dr. Blanton set down a general plan of the organization and then invited fourteen women to be founders of a national society. Eleven women accepted the challenge. They were: Mamie Sue Bastian, Ruby Cole, Mabel Grizzard, Anna Hiss, Ray King, Sue King, Helen Koch, Ruby Terrill Lomax, Cora Martin, Lalla Odom, and Lela Lee Williams. At this point a constitution was written and
approved by all twelve women. On May 11, 1929, in Austin, Texas, the first initiation took place and the Delta Kappa Gamma society came into being. The founders firmly believed that capable women in education should receive positions and salaries commensurate with those of men.
Delta Kappa Gamma Society was nine years old when Dr. Blanton made the long trip by train from Austin, Texas to Lansing, Michigan to officiate at the ceremonies, which would initiate the Michigan Founders and install the first two chapters of the state. The Hotel Olds was the site where, on Saturday, May 28, 1938, fifteen of the nineteen women from Michigan colleges and universities who had accepted the invitation of Dr. Blanton to be Founders were
initiated along with those they brought with them. Alpha Iota State founders were: Dr. Alma Ackley, Clements Fowler, Ruth A. Barber, Dr. Ruth A. Barnes, Dr. Ethel Winifred Bennett Chase, Dr. Orma Fitch Butler, Effie M. Downer, Mrs. Mabelle Sperry Ehlers, Maude I. Fiero, Cora Lavina Haas, Carolyn Hawes, Frances Herald, Dr. Elizabeth Ellen Lichty, Pearl A. Ludy
Guy, Laura Minar, Dr. Bertha Maude Ronan Cobb, Bess Stinson, Marion Franklin Stowe, Maude I. VanAntwerp, and Dr. Maude E. Watson. Since that time, Alpha Iota State has grown to encompass over 70 chapters with over 3,000 members.
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International currently has 82,000 members in 17 countries.

SOCIETY INSIGNIA
THE GOLD KEYPIN: The Greek letters ‘Delta
Kappa Gamma’ signify key women teachers. The laurel wreath signifies achievement and the cup, knowledge. The key should always be worn to official functions and meetings of the
Society. It should be placed over the heart as a pin, not on a chain or on collars.
THE EMBLEM IS THE CREST: The lamp of knowledge and the open book of scholarship
are united by a band of three Tudor roses signifying friendship, loyalty and helpfulness. The colors red and gold represent courage and
loyalty.
THREE OTHER SOCIETY SYMBOLS: The red rose symbolizes intellectual and spiritual beauty. The candles flame pierces ignorance
and illumines progress. The open book contains knowledge and inspiration.

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SONG Annie Webb Blanton and Cora M. Martin
Founders- May 11, 1929
Women teachers, to the calling,
Firmly rally, never falling, Duty ne’er upon us palling, Staunch, courageous, we
Loyalty and trust e’er heeding, Mindful of our sisters needing
Aid’ and guidance from those leading, Helpful may we be!
To Delta Kappa Gamma Faith we pledge forever!
Hand in hand, our loyal band, Forward, moving ever!
Onward tis our sisters need us Courage, Faith, and Honor lead us!
Wrongs in truth and justice heed us! Firmly shall we stand!
Guardians of the faith, yet sleeping For our sisters watch e’er keeping
Deeds of others now we’re reaping, We for others stand!
To us pioneers have given; We return their gifts to heaven;
Work of others is the leaven That inspires our band!
Oh, Delta Kappa Gamma
In thy fold we gather; Unity and Liberty
Shall be our watchword ever;
Education e’er we’ll further; Each is bound to each as brother;
With this faith in one another We shall win for aye!

ALPHA XI ANNUAL PROJECTS
LITERACY PROGRAM “BOOKS FOR BABIES” This project consists of giving a book to parents of
newborns in cooperation with Alpena General Hospital.
GRANT IN AID/SCHOLARSHIPS Two scholarships are given each year. One to a junior in
college who has declared their major in teaching for the amount of $1000.00. GREEN SCHOOL PROJECT:
Alpha Xi Chapter adopted Green School, a one-room school house, at the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena, Michigan. Each year Alpha Xi members donate money for repairs and upkeep of this school house as well as serving as docents
and teachers when teachers bring their classrooms to visit to experience a school day from the past. Alpha Xi developed a curriculum so that teachers can also teach their own lesson.
FALL HARVEST DAYS Alpha Xi members help in the Green School, at the Jesse Besser Museum’s Fall Harvest Days. Members serve as
docents explaining the history of the school, explain and display early toys and games, teach a sample lesson, and polish apples.
-
26
FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Each year members decorate a tree with teacher/student
related items that might have been seen on a tree decorated, for a school Christmas program, in a one room school. This is done in conjunction with the Jesse Besser Museum’s “Festival of Lights” celebration on display for the
month before Christmas. WORLD FELLOWSHIP Alpha Xi contributes a basket or certificates for Fall
Workshop and Spring Conference “Funding our Purposes Raffle”. First Year Teacher Support/Encouragement
$500 will be divided among selected first year teachers in the districts within Alpena, Presque Isle and Montmorency Counties The monies will be used to help the First Year Teacher buy necessary supplies for their classroom.
-
27
ALPHA XI FUNDRAISERS BEAN SOUP MIX SALE A variety of beans are packaged and sold to help raise
money to fund our projects. AUCTION Each spring we hold an auction featuring items made or

“After” Thoughts
*What should happen to my Delta Kappa Gamma pin? *What should happen to my yearbook? *What about helping the continuance of promoting excellence in women educators?
As to the first two questions, please request of your family and loved ones to return your Delta Kappa Gamma key in and yearbook to the local society. In your memory, they
will be passed on to new members with the knowledge of their past history and service. To accomplish the continued promotion of developing
excellence in women educators we all know the importance of scholarships. Quite often family and friends would appreciate the knowledge that you would be honored to be remembered in such a manner as a Delta Kappa Gamma
memorial scholarship in your name.

I am the proud mother of 2 children and the wife of a retired military man. I enjoy losing track of time in
my sewing/craft room. My mother taught me to sew at age 7 and I haven’t stopped enjoying this skill. I
make homemade greeting cards and love to share this craft with anyone who is willing to participate. I
love Michigan summers and enjoy every moment I can on the Long Lake with family and friends. I pride
myself on making life and learning fun, and live every day to its fullest.

My husband, Kenneth, have been blessed with our daughter, Lori (Mrs. Terry Staffeld) of Barrington, IL and
Gregory (Lisa) Melville of Sylvania, OH. Our two grandchildren, Michael and Jenna, also give us many hours
of fun when we are together. I currently serve on the Social Ministry Committee of my church. I served on
the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library Board of Trustees for 12 years, and am currently
President of this Board. Prior to teaching, I worked as a Legal Secretary, Deputy Register of Deeds for Alpena
County, and Instructional Assistant at Pied Piper Opportunity Center. I was also a Licensed Realtor. I enjoy
being a "Mom and Grandma," working crossword puzzles, reading, playing cards, and donating time to others.
I treasure the time I spend with my family and friends at the hunting camp on Hubbard Lake Trail and our
cottage at El Cajon Beach. Being chosen as the 2014 "Woman of Distinction" for Delta Kappa Gamma was
truly a wonderful honor.

In my formative years, my dad, who was a paper cutter by trade and 8th grade educ., always said, "When
you go to college", not if you go. So I grew up knowing I was going to college. I never doubted it. I found
a way to pay for it, student loans, jobs, and DKG scholarship. I come from a family of five kids. Four of us
have graduated from college, so setting the seed early for education does matter.
