John Oswalt, commentary on Isaiah, has noted that this last section of Isaiah takes the pattern of a chiasm, an ABCDEDCBA pattern where the climax E is at the centre, not the end. Parallel thoughts (A-A, B-B, C-C, D-D) gradually build up to that climax. A-A speaks about righteous foreigners (56:1-8 & 66:18-24); B-B about unrighteous Israel (56:9-59 & 59:15a, 63:7-66.17); C-C about the Divine Warrior who defeats sin (59:15b-21 & 63:1-6); D-D about Light shining through righteous people (60:1-22 & 61:4-62:12) and E, the climax is about the Messiah’s coming (61:1-3) (power-point chart) I. II. The Year of Jubilee – Isa. 61:1-11 (Lev. 25:10-12, 13-17) a. Good news for the poor (v. 1-6) – who are the poor, blind, broken-hearted, captives and

prisoners? What are three things that happen in the year of Jubilee? The first two were also to occur every Sabbath (seventh) year as well (Deut. 15:1-3, 12-15, Exod. 23:10-11)

a. Grace and justice (v. 7-9) – Evangelism must go hand in hand with social action. The gospel must be seen, as well as heard.

III. Bold Intercession for the coming of Zion (Isa. 62:1-12) a. The New Jerusalem (Zion) is compared to a bride, v. 1-7 (cf. Eph. 5:25-28, Rev. 19:6-8)

b. The Inhabitants of the New Jerusalem, v. 8-12 (cf. Rev. 21:1-5)

Questions:

If God’s plan is not just the salvation of individuals from sin and judgment, but also the restoration of his creation to its original glory,

1. What is our responsibility for the care of this present world? (Think climate change, plastics and environmental pollution, etc.)

2. How should we see and relate to our fellow human beings, created in God’s image, disfigured by sin, yet capable of glorious transformation by the gospel? (Think ex-prisoners, LGBT folk etc.)

3. Understanding the meaning of Jubilee, the year of the Lord’s favour, how may we bless our com-munity? (Think Kampong Siglap, foreign workers etc.)

Following from where we left off in Isaiah 55, what more can be said? For Isaiah has already told of the deliverance through Cyrus of the Jewish exiles from Babylonian captivity, of the Suffering Servant who saves God’s people, and of the promised restoration of and return to Zion. But in the oft-difficult time of the “now” & the “not yet”, who will live by faith as we await the consummation of God’s wonderful promises? And who will forsake such a glorious salvation and face God’s fearsome final judgment? As we conclude our Isaiah sermon series with Isaiah 56-66, may we be spurred to live faithfully in the sure hope of our Lord’s salvation & victorious return & His promised new creation, & be glad & rejoice in Him, with all the redeemed of the nations, forever. Let us pray for Dr Philip Satterthwaite, Dr Tan Lai Yong, Jason Sin, Elders Ernest Chew, Melville Szto, Daryl Liu, Joshua Quek as they take us through the series.
