BAFFERT MORPHINE CASE THROWN OUT Afederal judge in Los Angeles dismissed the CaliforniaHorse Racing Board’s ruling against trainer BobBaffert, according to The Blood-Horse. The board hadsuspended Baffert for 60 days when Nautical Looktested positive for morphine after a May, 2000 raceat Hollywood Park. In a 29-page decision, JudgeDickran Tevrizian ruled that Truesdail Laboratoriesthrew away the horse’s blood sample. “There is noway to tell if the urine sample was flawed or accu-rate without the blood and the blood was thrownaway on two different occasions intentionally, whichwas a violation of the due process clause of the 14thAmendment,” Tevrizian wrote. The decision couldimpact several other CHRB drug-positive cases, in-cluding a similar ruling against trainer Bobby Frankel.

Sunday, AqueductVALLEY STREAM S.-GIII, $80,775, AQU, 11-18, 2yo,f, 6f, 1:08 3/5, ft.1--FOREST HEIRESS, 122, f, 2, by Forest Wildcat

1st Dam: Penniless Heiress, by Pentelicus2nd Dam: Royal Ties, by Distinctive3rd Dam: *New Love, by Pardal (Fr)

O/B-New Farm (KY); T-Ben W Perkins Jr; J-R Migliore; $48,465. Lifetime Record: 5-4-1-0, $210,787. *Full to Forest Heir, MSW, $118,124. As the runners flashed under the wire at the end ofthe GIII Valley Stream S. two days ago, they pro-vided what could be the defining moment of ForestWildcat's young stallion career. While everyone wasalready well aware that this son of Storm Cat hastremendous potential, it was still something of arevelation to see a filly by Forest Wildcat give sixpounds and a thorough beating to two promisingStorm Cat fillies out of Grade I-winning mares. That Forest Wildcat filly, of course, was ForestHeiress, who has tasted defeat only once in fivestarts. That defeat came on the one occasion thatForest Heiress ventured as far as 6½ furlongs, in theGII Astarita S., and there must be a question abouthow far she will eventually stay. Her willingness tobe rated in her latest win certainly improves her pros-pects, but she is a sister to Forest Heir, a fastthree-year-old who gained the second of his stakesvictories in the Crank It Up S. over five furlongs inJune. Forest Wildcat, too, had distinct stamina limita-tions. His history provides one of the most extraordi-nary rags-to-riches anecdotes of recent years. By thetime he appeared at Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic sale as afour-year-old in December 1995, his record stood atonly four wins from 13 starts, for earnings of justunder $50,000. Forest Heiress' owner-breeder, the

New Farm of Eb and Nancy Novak, was able to buythe son of Storm Cat for only $57,000--a far cryfrom the $325,000 he had cost at Ocala as atwo-year-old. Forest Wildcat had been off the track for much of1995, but his new trainer, Ben Perkins Sr., quicklytransformed him into a formidable sprinter. Afterwinning his first start of 1996, Forest Wildcat carriedbottom weight of 109 pounds to victory in the GIIIMaryland Breeders' Cup H., leading throughout toequal the Pimlico track record of 1:09. By the timeForest Wildcat recorded his next stakes victory in theGIII Finger Lakes Breeders' Cup S., when he again ledvirtually throughout, Fred Seitz of Brookdale Farmhad purchased a half-interest. Seitz has never had cause to regret becoming in-volved with the horse. Forest Wildcat again equalledPimlico's six-furlong track record, this time under aburden of 122 pounds, when he easily won the BenCohen S. and he produced another front-runningvictory in the Phoenix Breeders' Cup S., which im-proved his record for the year to five wins fromseven starts. There was talk of Forest Wildcat finish-ing his career in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, but therace went by without him and he retired to Brookdaleat a fee of $10,000. It's a measure of how far hehas come that his fee for next year is listed as pri-vate. Pure, unadulterated speed was obviously ForestWildcat's main asset, even though his sire was a GIwinner over 8½ furlongs and his half-sister QueenAlexandra won three graded stakes over 1 1/8 miles. With a background like this, Forest Wildcat is boundto sire a proportion of winners which stay better thanhe did, the best example so far being the excellentturf filly Snow Dance, who has two graded victoriesover 1 1/8 miles. Snow Dance, though, is out of amare by the Kentucky Derby hero Spectacular Bid,whereas Forest Heiress' dam Penniless Heiress is byPentelicus, a specialist sprinter who equalledArlington's 6½-furlong record as a six-year-old.

Forest Heiress' fourth dam, Stavroula, was a sisterto the great Nashua, and her third dam, New Love, has numerous very successful descendants. In addi-tion to becoming the dam of Determined King (GIAmerican Derby), New Love produced two goodbroodmares to Distinctive. One, Distinctiveness, isthe dam of Distinctly North, a tremendously fastEnglish colt; and the other, Forest Heiress' seconddam Royal Ties, did even better, numbering LouisQuatorze's dam On to Royalty among her threestakes winners. Perhaps the incentive to send Penniless Heiress toForest Wildcat was provided by the success enjoyedby Forest Wildcat's half-sister Queen Alexandra, amillion-dollar earner by New Love's son DeterminedKing. In other words, Queen Alexandra is by a son ofNew Love out of Victoria Beauty, whereas ForestHeiress is by a son of Victoria Beauty out of agrand-daughter of New Love. The other incentive for pairing Forest Wildcat witha Pentelicus mare is that the mating represents thevery popular Storm Cat--Mr. Prospector cross. StormCat has sired major winners from daughters of Mr.Prospector and Forty Niner, and his matings withmares by Fappiano, the sire of Pentelicus, have thisyear produced the GIII winner Batique and theGI-placed juvenile Magic Storm.

CORRECTION: Monday’s TDN reported that the winnerof the G1 Premio Roma, Shibuni Falcon (GB) (PolarFalcon--Shibuni {GB}, by Damister), had failed to winpast the Listed level earlier in his career. In fact, thefour-year-old won the G2 Premio Guido Berardelli as atwo-year-old. We regret the error.
