FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PURPLE LIGHTS TELL A STORY OF HOPE AT PURPLELIGHT ATLANTA Atlanta, GA – The Atlanta Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will usher in National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in November at its annual PurpleLight vigil on Sunday, October 26 at 6 p.m. at Atlanta Metropolitan College, 1630 Metropolitan Pkwy SW, Atlanta. The event is a gathering of survivors, families, and friends of those affected by pancreatic cancer, forming a community of hope as they illuminate purple glow sticks to honor survivors and remember those who have fought the disease. More than 80 communities across the nation host PurpleLight events, helping to bring year-round awareness of the goal of doubling pancreatic cancer survival by 2020. Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of the major cancers, with a five-year relative survival rate of just 6% (73% of those diagnosed die within a year of diagnosis). There are no standard early detection tools and only minimally effective treatments. The disease is expected to move from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. by 2020. The event is free of charge and is open to the public; free parking is available onsite. To register, please visit pancan.org/purplelight/atlanta_landing.html.
