Graduate School of Medical Sciences Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master’s Level Section of Integrated Course

Number of students: 38 students ●Admission Policy (AP)

This program aims to foster human resources equipped with a broad knowledge and research abilities ranging from basic

to applied in pharmaceutical sciences, as well as global view. Through education and basic research treating various

physiologically active substances including medicines from chemical, physical, or biological points of views, the school

trains outstanding human resources who can contribute to general life sciences containing drug discovery. Specifically, the

school cultivates human resources who play an active role as researchers or MRs in pharmaceutical-, chemical-, or

food-related companies and as researchers of public institutions, administrative officers in the field of medical care, public

welfare, pharmaceutical affairs, and environmental sciences. The Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences accepts students

regardless of previous faculty if they strive to succeed in these types of jobs in the future.

In the basic policy on our selection of students, we consider the following traits as important:

• A higher level of academic ability (major field and English)

• Strong motivation to succeed in the field described above in the future.

In the selection process, we evaluate the basic academic ability, English proficiency, logical thinking ability, expressive

power, and so on by achievement and interview examinations.

●Curriculum Policy (CP)

This program employs a curriculum composition consisting of hierarchy and plural processes to achieve a broad

knowledge and research abilities ranging from basic to applied level centered on pharmaceutical sciences. In the hierarchy

process, the lecture subject groups start from ‘Essential GS Course’ and ‘Introduction,’ ‘Advanced Course,’ ‘Experimental

Techniques,’ and ‘Advanced Seminar’ are offered in this order during two years of study. By contrast, in the plural

processes, the subject groups, which cross three areas mentioned as ‘Chemical area,’ ‘Biological area,’ and

‘Pharmaceutical area,’ are offered after ‘Introduction.’ Based on this curriculum, students study a broad knowledge in

early-stage with gradual enhancement of their proficiency level and gain the latest knowledge in the specific area. Then,

students can foster a global view by expert English subjects, classes in English, and in addition ‘Free Course Entries.’

Using the knowledge acquired from the classes, the school cultivates communication abilities in research and

problem-solving abilities for unknown issues through working on ‘Drill Course’ and ‘Practical Course’ in expert course as

well as achieving the research outcomes on specific problems followed by writing a dissertation and its presentation and

discussion.

●Diploma Policy (DP) The goal of this program is to produce students who have obtained research abilities on an academic discipline centered

on pharmaceutical sciences. Specifically, the school fosters human resources acquiring (1) a broad knowledge ranging

from basic to applied in pharmaceutical sciences, (2) global viewpoints, (3) ethics view on executing research, (4)

communication abilities on research, (5) willingness and attitude for self-improvement, and (6) qualities on extraction of

unknown issues and on suggestion for their solution. To achieve this, the proficiency level of students is determined based

on examinations and/or reports in lecture subject groups. Additionally, to determine the proficiency level in research

abilities acquiring through drill and practical courses, the students must submit a thesis (master’s degree) describing

research outcomes and conduct an oral presentation and discussion, which are reviewed by Graduate School

Committees. Students who have passed the entire process are granted the Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Research Guidance 1. Research Guidance System

The Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences employs a guidance system with multiple teachers to improve

the quality of research guidance.

1) Research guidance group (1) Each student is assigned to a research guidance group consisting of one primary supervisor

and one supervisor.

(2) The formation of each research guidance group is decided at committee meetings of each division.

(3) Primary supervisors bear the responsibility of providing guidance to help students prepare

plans for taking subjects and research plans, carry out research, prepare an interim research report and master’s thesis, as well as degree applications.

(4) Supervisors assist primary supervisors.

2. Research guidance and degree application procedure

The following is the schedule for research guidance and the degree application procedure so that

students may meet the requirements within a specified course term. (1) Students must receive counseling from a research guidance group immediately after entering

the school and prepare the "[Form 1](P.13) Research Plan" and "[Form 2](P.14) Academic

and Research Plan" for submission to the primary supervisor. Form 1 contains a complete description of research plan during the academic years and Form 2 contains an academic

and research plan for each academic year.

These forms can be obtained from the following web site. ( http://www.p.kanazawa-u.ac.jp/student/format.html )

(2) Students must submit a program registration of the academic year on the Acanthus Portal

before specified date in accordance with Form 2. The deadlines for each program registration will be announced on the Acanthus Portal at the beginning of each term.

(3) Students must conduct their research according to research plan. If there is a major change

in research plan, notify the research guidance group and modify Form 1 and Form 2 after consulting with the group.

(4) Students must compile research outcomes into a doctoral thesis with the help of the research

guidance group. The prepared doctoral thesis is reviewed and modified by the group and sent to a preliminary examination.

(5) Students must complete a degree application procedure in accordance with the review

requirements for the master’s thesis. (6) Students must undergo the evaluation of the doctoral thesis and final oral examination of the

master’s thesis.

(7) Students who have completed the above steps are evaluated at a committee meeting of each division for final review based on the credit acquisition status and the results of the final

examination. Those who have passed the final review may complete the master’s course and

receive the Master of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

To be effective as of April 1, 2012

The Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Division of Pharmacy, Graduate School of Medical

Sciences, Kanazawa University, implements the following guidelines for guidance, such as preparing

the doctoral thesis ("research guidance"):

1. The primary supervisor shall use Form 1 of the research plans submitted by the student to

determine plans for research guidance until the student's final academic year upon consultation

with the student and provide it to the student after admission to the school without delay.

2. The primary supervisor shall, at his or her discretion, receive a report describing the progress

of research from the student. Upon consultation with the student, the primary supervisor shall

review and modify the research guidance plans prepared in 1. above if the need arises.

3. The student shall prepare Form 2 of the academic and research plans according to Form 1 of

the research plans and submit it to the primary supervisor at the beginning of each academic

year.

4. The primary supervisor shall retain Forms 1 and 2 of the research plans related to the student

for five years after graduation.
