UNITED WAY OF LARIMER COUNTY
ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015
Dear Friends,
The people of Larimer County have a strong history of coming together to create change. It’s one of the remarkable qualities that makes our community such a great place to live, work, and play.
The 2014-2015 fiscal year marked important progress in United Way’s bold move into a new era of collective problem-solving to reduce poverty in Larimer County. We are no longer the transactional organization of the past. With every dollar raised, we are committed to building a better future for everyone, including nonprofits, donors, and especially children and families in need.
More than 70 partners, representing nonprofits, foundations, school districts, Colorado State University, and local and county government, have come to the table to engage with United Way beyond a traditional funding relationship. Together, we are channeling and sharing resources, removing barriers, increasing efficiencies, reducing duplication – all with the vision to create systemic, transformational change that reduces poverty in Larimer County.
Thousands of local children, families and individuals have already benefited from the collaborative partnerships and life-changing programs that are part of this collective movement, and we’re growing stronger every day.
Local children are getting the early support they need to be successful in school. Local youth are developing skills and behaviors that set them up for a future filled with promise and opportunity. Local families are better equipped on their path to self-sufficiency. Families and individuals in crisis are getting access to basic needs services so they can focus on improving their circumstances. All of these efforts make a long-term difference in reducing poverty and improving the quality of life for everyone in Larimer County.
To our partners, donors, advocates, and volunteers, we extend our heartfelt thanks for all you’ve done to change lives and strengthen our community over the last year. Your compassion, generosity, and dedication fuel the work we do every day and make our impact possible.
Great things happen when we LIVE UNITED, and we look forward to sharing our continued progress and results with you in the months and years to come.
Sincerely,
Chuck LevineChair, Board of Directors

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR!
Investment includes program dollars, donor designations, disaster relief and recovery, and grant awards focused on transforming the way local organizations work together to create long-term, lasting change to the issue of poverty in Larimer County.
United Way partnered with AmeriCorps, SERVE Colorado and Thompson School District to bring this nationally-recognized program to Larimer County. Focused on helping local children read at grade level so they can stay on track to graduate, the program helped 422 children in its first year.
During the week-long event organized by United Way, 2,314 volunteers completed 94 service projects throughout the community. In total volunteers provided approximately 9,576 hours of service, which equals $215,939 in dollar impact. Make A Difference Day is the largest week of volunteer service in Larimer County.
Congratulations to The Fort Collins Coloradoan, winner of the inaugural Campaign of the Year award. Spirit of Giving award winners also included Town of
Estes Park, Anheuser-Busch Company, The Group, Inc., and James Walters of Enterprise Holdings as
Campaign Coordinator of the Year.
More than 650 women (and a few men) gathered for a inspirational event that showcased the power of women helping women in Larimer County. WomenGive is an initiative of United that provides childcare scholarships to single mothers so they can earn a higher education and build a better future for their families.
United Way partnered with 23 local businesses throughout the month of April to collect more than 4,900 new or gently used books to be distributed to empower local children with the gift of reading, a 230% increase over the number of books collected in 2014.
Generation United brings together the passion and philanthropic power of local young professionals to make a difference in our community. Young professionals from across Larimer County gathered for the
annual event at Odell Brewing Company to connect with the next generation of community change-makers and enjoy craft beer and local music.
Nearly 900 people came together for the largest gathering of people and organizations committed to making a difference in northern Colorado at United Way’s 2015 State of the Community event. Attendees learned about the power of collective impact, witnessed the impact of Colorado Reading Corps, and celebrated one our community’s best collaborative figures in Ginny Riley, retired Director of the Department of Human Services for Larimer County.
Your Impact on Melissa and her FamilyMelissa is a hard-working single mother living in Fort Collins. Young and in love, she dropped out of Poudre High School in the 10th grade and married her longtime boyfriend. After several years in what became an abusive marriage, she bravely decided it was time to make a better life for her and her two children.
With little education or family resources, Melissa struggled to make ends meet each month despite working several part-time jobs. When her rent was significantly past due and she received an eviction notice, Melissa desperately called United Way 2-1-1 to get help.
The work of United Way has made the referral process much easier for Melissa to navigate. United Way Partners, Neighbor to Neighbor and Project Self-Sufficiency (PS-S), worked together to support a seamless referral so she could get help with her long-term goals. Melissa was back on track with these services and obtained her GED, but without additional education she knew she would never truly get ahead. Melissa’s PS-S Advisor worked with United Way staff to introduce Melissa to the WomenGive program. With WomenGive’s help, she worked part-time and attended Colorado State University. Melissa was finally able to focus on the importance of her studies knowing that her children were in a safe and nurturing environment.
In May 2015, Melissa graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and found full-time employment that allows her to care for herself and her children independently. A first-generation graduate, her graduation day was a momentous occasion, but she’s not the only one dreaming bigger. Now that Melissa’s children have seen their mother succeed and know the value of that education, they are likely to follow in her footsteps toward their own college degrees.
Your Impact on RachelRachel is three years old and lives with her grandmother, Betty, in Loveland. She’s been under her grandmother’s watchful eye since birth, as her father and mother weren’t able to care for her. Her grandmother has built a loving home for her, ensuring that Rachel’s basic needs are met, but without access to quality early learning opportunities, she is at risk of entering school behind.
Betty struggled through school and doesn’t feel comfortable reading out loud to Rachel. Because of this, and the fact that the family lives in poverty, Rachel will be exposed to 15,000 fewer words than many of her peers. This “word gap” is one aspect of her early development that may hold her back in her academic success. Ninety percent of our brain’s growth occurs by the age of five, so these tender, early years are so important.
Fortunately for Rachel, her grandmother visited the Community Life Center and was connected to United Way’s Be Ready Navigator. The Navigator quickly assessed their situation and made valuable recommendations about quality pre-Kindergarten programs for Rachel and supports for Betty.
Through the work of United Way’s Be Ready partnership, hundreds of parents are using scholarships to access quality early childcare for their kids, parent education about school readiness, and tools to help their kids enter school ready to learn. Children who enter school with early skills, such as a basic knowledge of math and reading, are more likely than their peers to experience future academic success, attain higher levels of education, and secure employment. Absence of these and other skills may contribute to even greater disparities down the road.
United Way is committed to making sure every child in Larimer County enters school ready to learn, so they can reach their full potential.
UNITED WAY 2-1-1 PROVIDES VITAL CONNECTION TO SERVICES IN LARIMER COUNTYUnited Way 2-1-1 is a community connection to services and information that anyone in our community can access. All services are confidential and free of charge.
By calling 2-1-1 (or 970-407-7066), you can get help or information on crisis hotlines, food and clothing, housing and utility assistance, aging services, disaster recovery, mental health services, volunteer opportunities, health and medical needs, legal assistance, donation referrals, substance abuse services, and so much more.
More than 10,500 contacts (calls, emails or chats) came into our local team of 2-1-1 community specialists from people needing to get help and those wanting to give help in Larimer County between July 2014 and June 2015.

Loyal Contributors are donors who have contributed to any United Way for at least 10 years, regardless of their giving level. United Way’s Loyal Contributors truly understand what it means to be committed to helping our community, and have backed that commitment with generous support year after year.
Members of United Way of Larimer County’s Loyal Contributor program are part of an esteemed group of loyal donors who inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow in our local community. We greatly appreciate the consistent support of our Loyal Contributors, who have positively impacted the lives of so many in our community.
