The Five Elements Secret # 5
“Change has considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may
get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may getbetter. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better. Obviously, then, one's character and frame
of mind determine how readily he brings about change and how he reacts to change that is imposed on him.”
- King Whitney Jr.
Special Feature: The Five Elements to Improve your Business

The Five Element Theory: Identification, Cycles, and Attributes
The Big Five are:
• The energetic progression of nature’s perfect balance.• The building blocks that individually, and in combination,
create everything. • The Five Elements are:
Fire, Earth, Metal, Wood, and Water
The secret to using the Five Elements is that when all the elements are balanced in your space,
you are in perfect balance too.
Once you understand their attributes, energetic representations, and cycles, the elements are easy to use.
Feng Shui is Chinese Medicine
Chinese medicine incorporates the Five Elements too. Like your home, every internal organ (heart, spleen, lung, kidney, and liver) isrepresented by one of the Five Elements. Health deficiencies andimbalances are diagnosed and treated by the same Five Elements andenergetic cycles through herbs, acupuncture, and food.
Holistic and elementally balanced treatment supports healing from thecore of the problem as compared to western medicine’s treatment of asymptom. What great fortune to have the best of both worlds to supportour good health.

Here's is a Basic, Element Basic
From Basic Feng Shui all the way to Advanced, Advanced...Feng Shui always reverts back to the Elemental Basics!
Elements and Cycles of Earth Energy
The ever-changing cycles of nature are easilyunderstood by the Yin/Yang cycle of day and night.
A light switch doesn’t flash on the light of the sun.Day and night are a progression of an energetic cycle.
The quiet Yin-ness of midnight slowly lightens to the soft gray of dawnbefore it makes a transition into the brighter and brighter activities ofYang. As the day progresses, the Yang of day wanes and cycles back intosoft gray before the full darkness of night-time Yin.
ADVANCED: When you recognize that all Feng Shui concepts are aprogression of energy, you will understand how all Feng Shui works. There are no hard lines of demarcation. Feng Shui, as in life, is aprocess of nature’s continuum.
• In Form Feng Shui, whatever kind of energy is within a given space,it doesn’t have hard lines on demarcation unless it is contained by fourwalls. Energy flows: it transitions and dissipates. Visualize this energylike the cycles of day and night. In other words, as one energy isconcentrated, as it moves it lessens in intensity as another energybuilds in strength. In space, the only way that energy gets modified isthrough an item’s energy-altering attributes or if there are walls tocompletely contain it. (Form School explained in Feng Shui Today

• In the same way that you do not change overnight from a child intoan adult, your human aspects of Feng Shui and needs and desireschange over time.
• According to Feng Shui Flying Stars (Secrets #8 and #9), when anenergy-cycle of prosperity is high, there will be a progression thatbuilds your success. The opposite is true when cycles are lessfavorable.
Here are some Element Tips
• Elements are the most important concept in Feng Shui (and inall Chinese Medicine).
• The elements are used in all aspects of Feng Shui, from theBagua (Secret #6) to the more advanced and profound Flying StarFeng Shui (Secrets #8 and #9). The elements are also the root ofBest Direction Feng Shui.
• Bonus: Learn fromhow I used the elementsin this recent Turn-KeyFeng Shui Design Project.
Enjoy the beforeand after photos.
Cycles: Seasonal, Generative,Control, and Regenerative
Each element is associated witha Trigram (remember, thecosmology of the I-Ching that
identifies the structure of nature), direction, color, shape, texture, material, life-desire, shape, personality, and season. It is easy to seehow the Five -Element Theory evolved in this simplifiedChinese-metaphysics lesson by studying the cycle of the seasons.

With the sprouting of Spring, Wood grows out of the Earth; as the treegrows, its fruit blossoms with the Fire of Summer; in Autumn, it istime to harvest, and the Earth constricts into Metal; and as Winterapproaches, Metal transitions into the frozen Water of Winter.
The seasonal cycle is one of the three cycles in the Five-ElementTheory. Known as the Creative Cycle, one season and its relatedelement grow into the next.
Creative Cycle
Fire produces Earth (ash). Earthcreates Metal (minerals). Metalholds Water. Water nurturesWood. Wood feeds Fire.
Elemental Effect: Each element generates and enhances theenergy of the element that comes after it inthe cycle.
Using Creative Cycle: When you want to add more of a specificenergy, add the element that representsthe attribute and/or the element thatcreates it.
Example: If your business is a bit sluggishand you want to motivate new creativity, add Wood and Fire because Wood feedsFire, and Fire supports itself.
5.12 The Five Elements

JamiLin.com • Feng-Shui-Interior-Design • ColorAlchemy • Age-Defying Skin Care
Control Cycle
Fire burns Wood. Wood absorbsWater. Water corrodes Metal.Metal condenses Earth. Earthsmothers Fire.
Easy Awareness! The Control Cycle is the “opposite” of theCreative Cycle; like reading the graphic of theCreative Cycle backwards.
Elemental Effect: Each element drains and uses up the energyfrom the element that generated or created it.
Using Control Cycle: If you have too much of one element, youmust keep it under control with the elementthat came before it. For instance, Metal energyis about financial success, if your office has anoverabundance of gray it will not be balancedand problems may occur. (Remember all therich and famous people that had IRSproblems?) Keep “financial, above-the-lawattitudes” under control by adding the WaterElement.
When you need to reduce an element, but not control it completely, use the Reduction Cycle.

JamiLin.com • Feng-Shui-Interior-Design • ColorAlchemy • Age-Defying Skin Care
Reduction Cycle
Wood consumes Earth. Earth fills in Water. Water puts out Fire. Firemelts Metal. Metal chops Wood.
Elemental Effect: Each element, depending on the quantity thatis added, can be mitigated by the ReductionElement.
Using Reduction Cycle: Let’s say you have green carpet and allthe walls are also painted green, you havean overabundance of the Wood Element.Of course you don’t want to reduce allcreativity or new ideas, but if your head isalways exploding with new vision, nothingwill ever get finalized. If you add someMetal to chop some of the Wood, therewill be greater balance.
Using the Elements: Examples
Element decisions benefit you in multiple ways:
• To add more balance like in the green example above, you can alsoadd a portion of Fire to burn some of the Wood (Control Cycle). AddingFire creates more Earth (Creative Cycle: Fire produces Earth), which inturn, stabilizes and brings ideas to fruition.
• When you have a combination item such as a bulky (Earth) sofa thatis red leather (double Fire: color and animal material), be sure tobalance that major design feature with a complimentary element.Because Fire and Earth are in direct relationship in the Creative Cycle(Fire produces Earth) and in the Control Cycle (Earth smothers Fire),refer to the Reduction Cycle for the solution. Consider a (Water),glass-topped coffee table in front of the sofa for elemental balance. Now,the Fire and Earth are in harmony because Water puts out Fire and Earthfills in Water.
• With an understanding of the Five-Element attributes you can startexperimenting with your personality type. If your personality has toomuch or too little of an element, it may create personal unhappiness or

disharmony in your workplace. If you had too much of the Fire Elementin your character, you may be too aggressive and alienate coworkers, employees, and even clients. Too little Fire may lead to totalunproductiveness (more about this in Secret #6).
Identifying and Recognizing an Element
• The element itself. • Items made from elements.• Objects that represent the elements.• Artwork that renders the elements.• The color or shape of an element.• The “Essence” of the item:
(For example, if you have a wood piece of furniturethat is randomly curvilinear, perhaps its essence isWater, not Wood.)
Element Do’s
• Add an element when there is too much or too little of one byselecting the element that creates, reduces, or controls.
• If you want an energetic charge, add the specific element thatrepresents what you want to: motivate (Fire), stabilize (Earth),grow (Wood), be sensitive/intuitive (Water), support abundance(Metal).
• To support a sector or room: add the element of the Baguadirection (Secret #6).
• Consider the Yin and Yang qualities of each element in your evaluation to create design interest. Be Creative! The
element colors do not have to come straight out of a crayonbox. Example: Emerald Green is Yang and Pastel Green isYin.

Element Don’ts
Don’t add too much of any element. Too much may...
Earth: Create stagnation and boredom.
Water: Create too much dreaminess without clear mentalboundaries or focus.
Fire: Make you too hot to handle, hot tempered andproduce burn out.
Metal: Create a stand-off personality and elitist attitude.
Wood: Make you irritable, and while opportunities flow, nothing gets completed.

Air?
Western and Eastern philosophies differ about the number ofelements. Regardless of which tradition, all the elementalrepresentations originated from the ancient master’s observingnature and the cycles.
Western traditions such as Astrology, Kabbalah, and the Tarot, while also energetically and scientifically based, use fourelements: air, water, fire and earth. Eastern teachings suggestfive.
When you work with the Five Elements for a while you willappreciate the fluid way they move in cycles. Notice thesmooth progression of energy (how one flows into the next)between the Five Elements in all three cycles (Creative,Control and Regenerative) as compared to the Western four.
TIP: Although you don’t have to memorize the cycles, become veryfamiliar with them. They are easy to access once you rememberwhat happens in real life. Take a second to consider what happensto an element when another one is introduced. Ask yourself, “whatdoes one element do to the other.” Common sense will tell youwhat element to add for elemental balance.
Now, go through your home, look at all the items you find Beautiful,Functional and Beneficially Symbolic and learn what elements theyrepresent. Can their placement be fine-tuned?
You will be with provided your special tips to Deepen Love, IncreaseWealth, Improve Health, and to Raise Your Spirit when I add theelements to the Life-Desire Bagua in the next Secret. That’s when I’llhave plenty of tips to share with you.
