Software required for MAP Generation using GPS Waypoints

Steps to Generate MAP by using GPS waypoints

I) GARMIN MAP SOURCE

1) Garmin Map source

2) Microsoft Office Excel-2003

3) VASANTHA

4) ArcView GIS 3.2 version

I) GARMIN MAP SOURCE(Downloading GPS Waypoints to Compute )

II) MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL-2003( Saving the GPS Waypoints copied from Garmin

MAP source which are downloaded to computer from GPS in ta le format like Serial

Number, Latitude, Longitude)

III) VASANTHA ( Locating the GPS Waypoints on concerned Division MAP from Excel

Sheet)

IV) ARCVIEW( Generating the MAPs using VASANTHA shape file, Designing, Lay outing,

Locating created map on village, beat, section, range, ivision…etc maps, Printing the

generated map)

(Downloading GPS Waypoints to Computer)

1) Create a Main Folder by giving the convenient name (Ex: GUNGARAGATTI) in a drive (Ex:

D-Drive) other than C-Drive. Create EXCEL, VASANTHA and ARCVIEW sub folders in th

All the above mentioned Software should be properly installed in the computer

before the work to carry out.

Main Folder (Ex: GUNGARAGATTI main folder). Close the page and connect GPS to

computer via connecting cable and made the GPS in condition.

2) (Single Click) on Start button in the screen Garmin Map Source.

A blank page will appear on screen with World Map. The page will appear as below.

Grid Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd . It is very necessary because the way

point format from GPS receiver should be hddd.ddddd format only.

4) Double click on the icon.

A new page with dialog box containing the Device name and different options

will appear as below page.

5) Select which data to be received from the device ( Ex: Waypoints) and click on

icon.

Another page will appear with dialog box.

The data was successfully received

Click OK option.

Way point will appear on the left side of the page as shown in below diagram.

Select the field which you want to see (Ex: Waypoints)

6) Select the waypoints and them.COPY

7) Save the MAP Source Page in main folder (Ex: GUNGARAGATTI).

(Saving the GPS Waypoints copied from Garmin MAP sourc which are downloaded to

computer from GPS in table format like Serial Number, Latitude, Longitude)

1) Select Start Programs Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Excel-2003

II) MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL-2003

A blank Excel Page will appear on the screen. Paste the copied GPS Waypoints from

MAP source to sheet2.

2) Delete Serial number, Symbol & name, Date, etc except LATITUDE,

LONGITUDE COLUMN. Latitude and Longitude will remain i single column.

Copy and paste the content in another column so as to separation of

LATITUDE and LONGITUDE data.

In First Column we need to keep LATITUDE digits (Data) only. So

we have to delete character, character and data after character from First

Column.

In Second Column we need to keep LOGITUDE digits (Data)

only. So we have to delete character, data after character and character

from Second Column.

3) Select the First Column data and press keys simultaneously from the

key board.

A dialog box will appear on the sheet.

4) Type character in then Replace Replace all OK Close

All the characters will replaced in the First Column

9) Paste the Waypoints in Sheet1 as below shown table for .( S No, Latitude &

Longitude Table Format)

10) Save the EXCEL page in EXCEL folder of Main Folder( Ex: GUNGARAGATTI) by

giving the convenient File Name( Ex: CAMPUS)

If MAP SOURCE Software/Data cable of GPS not available then the GPS

Waypoints from GPS receiver in hddd .ddddd format directly entered in

the EXCEL page in table format. There is no compulsory to Download the

GPS waypoints in MAP Sorce.

III) VASANTHA

(Locating the GPS Waypoints on concerned Division MAP m Excel Sheet)

1) Start Programs Vasantha Vasantha

A blank page will appear on the screen.

2) Connect GPS icon OK

Division MAP will appear with FMSE- GPS download file name on the screen.

3) From Excel option.

4) Select the Drive (Ex: D) where your Main Folder ( Ex: ARAGATTI). Double

click on Main Folder Name (Ex: GUNGARAGATTI) and select the EXCEL sub folder

and select the File name (Ex: CAMPUS) and then click ok.

5) Enter sheet number (Ex: 1) where the Waypoints saved a ck ok.

The Waypoints will appear at Left side of the Division P page in table format.

6) Select A dialog Box will appear on the MAP. Type

in the box. And click OK. The GPS Waypoints will appear on the

Division MAP.

7) Save the page in VASANTHA Sub Folder of Main Folder (Ex: GUNGARAGATTI) by

giving File name & click OK.

IV) ARCVIEW GIS 3.2

( Generating the MAPs using VASANTHA shape file, Desig ing, Lay outing, Locating

created map on village, beat, section, range, division tc maps, Printing the generated map)

1) Start Programs ESRI ArcView GIS 3.2 ArcView GIS 3.2

A blank page will appear on the screen.

2) Select as a blank project OK. Blank page will appear on the screen.

3) Double click icon. Blank page with different icons will appear on screen.

4) Add Theme icon.

5) Change the Drives(Ex: D) where Main Folder created(Ex: GUNGARAGATTI) and double

click on Main Folder name and in that double click on VASANTHA sub folder. The File

name with will appear at the left side of the dialog box. OK

The file name with will appear at left side of the screen.

Select the File name. The way points will appear on th screen.

6) View Properties. A dialog box will appear on the screen.

7) Theme Auto label. A dialog box will appear on the page. Change in Label Field

GPS waypoints will appear on the screen with serial numbers.

8) Press and hold Draw Point icon. Select polygon icon to join the

Waypoints.

9) Join the Waypoints from serial wise. At last Waypoint le click to complete

the polygon.

10) The segment length, perimeter and area of the polygon will appear at the left

corner of the page. Note down the information.

11) While joining one Waypoint to another Waypoint we can note down the each

segment length.

12) If we want to Draw or MAPs we can select zigzag Draw point icon

which is not a closed traverse.

CARE MUST BE TAKEN THAT NO DOUBLE CLICK IN BETWEEN. IF

DOUBLE CLICKED THEN THERE IS NO UN-DO OPTION.

Lay outing and Printing the generated map

1) View Layout. Select the suitable orientation of the page li rtrait or Landscape &

OK. A layout page will appear.

2) Double click on View1 and Change the data as you like. x: GUNGARAGATTI CAMPUS,

Perimeter: 1.49 KM, Area: 0.09 Square KM, Date of Surv y: 08-11-2012, Time: 10.00

3) Bring the Scale bar at centre, Direction Symbol at Right corner.

4) Save the created MAP in the ARCVIEW sub folder of Main Folder (Ex:

3) Select the file and click OK. Select the village.shp on the left corner of

village name. Click OK.

Separating or Cutting the RANGE MAP from Division MAP

1) Add Theme Select drive. Double Click on Program Files Double click on

Vasantha Double click on fis_shape

2) Select the file and click OK. Select the village.shp on the left corner of

the page.

3) Theme Auto label. A dialog box will appear. Change label field as for

village name.

4) File Extensions Geoprocessing OK

5) Select Feature icon.

6) Theme Convert to shape file OK YES. If we select & de-select the Range.shp &

converted shape file Theme1 we see the separation.

Showing the MAP generated by GPS Waypoints on Google Earth

1) Download GPS waypoints to the MAPSOURCE as done I) GARMIN MAPSOURCE section.

2) Join the Waypoints by Route Tool.
