ISAAC CORNWELL 1774 – 1811
Narrator
1. Crime and Punishment The scene is the gracious home of Thomas Spark at Leybourne where all is peaceful and God is an Englishman. On the afternoon of 22
nd
August, 1790, the peace is disturbed by three boys who are discovered in the house, having entered without permission. After a short chase, they are caught and brought before the Kent Assizes at nearby Maidstone two days later. They are convicted of larceny, to wit, clothes to the value of £1/17/0. One of the three is Isaac Cornwell, aged 15. He is sentenced to Transportation to NSW for the term of seven years. The good people of Kent are heard praising the Lord that this villain has been punished appropriately for his crime. 2. The Voyage of the Third Fleet Some of the ships in the so-called Third Fleet are ready to sail from Plymouth. On board the William and Ann is Isaac Cornwell, probably terrified, surrounded by 187 other convicts, many much older than him. On 27th March, 1791, three of the eleven ships in the fleet move slowly out of the harbour, then the wind catches the full sails and they are off into the Atlantic. To take advantage of prevailing winds, the fleet crosses to Rio de Janeiro where fresh food and water are taken aboard. The sounds of the local bands can be heard. Soon they are underway again, rounding The Cape and racing through The Roaring Forties towards their destination, Sydney Town. Their arrival on 28th August is greeted with enthusiasm as the four-year-old colony is starving. The captain is praised as only seven of the convicts had died during the 154 day voyage. 3. Convict Life in NSW Isaac is assigned to government work and various landholders as a labourer. He serves out his sentence and learns the trade of a cabinet maker. 4. Love and Death In 1797, Isaac meets another convict, a petty thief named Margaret Stocker, who had been transported for seven years for stealing two yards of printed cotton from a shop counter. She is 19 years old. They marry in St.Phillip’s Church and soon have five children. By 1810, the Cornwells are farming a grant of 100 acres at Richmond at the foot of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. Life is hard but better than it would have been if Isaac had stayed in England. Governor Macquarie visits the Hawkesbury district and declares The Five Towns on New Year’s Day 1811. There is much celebration and the drinking and revelry gets out of hand. Isaac runs out of grog so goes to a neighbour’s house to see if he can get some more. A fight takes place. The neighbour is afraid of all the drunkenness and fires a gun through the door, killing Isaac. His body is taken for burial at St.Matthew’s Church, Windsor. Isaac Cornwell was a Gggggrandfather of the composer. (Notes by James Moule)
