Northport Gallery:“Black and White” Illustrations by Barbara Kelley Artist Barbara Kelley titles her exhibit “Black and White” not only because her work is physically black and white, but because the concepts she portrays cover the many shades of grey in between black and white issues. Her editorial illustrations reflect contemporary issues ranging from national health care, education, and feminism, to terrorism and natural disasters. Ms. Kelley’s work is seen regularly on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal where she began as a staff portrait artist in 1982 doing her “trademark” dot portraits. Other clients have included The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Newsday, as well as advertising agencies and publishers.

The new Library Courtyard is a welcome addition to the Northport Library. The courtyard, which has added 3,000 square feet of outdoor space, has been designed with the flexibility to allow for reading, conversation, Library Cafe seating, children’s storytimes, performances, and other programs. Funds for the Library Courtyard were raised through generous community donations. Additional donations are welcome to help us enhance the courtyard with more seating and seasonal landscaping. Donations of $500 or more, received by December 1, 2005, will be recognized on a permanent courtyard plaque. Donation forms are available at the library. The public will be invited to an official dedication of the courtyard in the spring of 2006. At that time, recognition will be given to all those who have contributed to this exciting project.

Thanks to Generous Community Support . . .

Fiber Optics Installed Fiber-optic lines are strands of optically pure glass that can carry digital information at high speeds. Dedicated fiber optic lines have now been installed to connect the Northport and East Northport library buildings. These lines will provide high-speed data transfer and voice communica-tion between our buildings and will replace multiple subscriber lines. We are looking forward to this investment reducing our future telecommunica-tion costs, supplying a significant increase in data transfer capacity, and providing the infrastructure for future development.

In observance of Veterans Day,no programs scheduled today.
