AS/NZS 2210.1 - Safety, Protective and Occupational Footwear Part 1: Guide to Selection, Care and Use.

The purpose of standard AS/NZS 2210.1 is to provide users with an understanding of the requirements for the selection,

care and use of safety, protective and occupational footwear in an extensive range of workplaces and professions.

In general, safety, protective and occupational footwear should be worn to reduce injuries to feet resulting from:

(a) Contact with Falling, Rolling or Cutting Objects; (b) Penetration through the Sole or Uppers;

(c) Friction or Pressure Blistering; (d) Explosions and Electrical Hazards;

(e) Contact with Chemicals, Heat and Molten Metals; and (f) Slipping.

The following standards AS/NZS 2210.3 (Safety Footwear), AS/NZS 2210.4 (Protective Footwear) and AS/NZS 2210.5

(Occupational Footwear) are three levels of standards of footwear which have varying levels of protection.

AS/NZS 2210.3 - Occupational Protective Footwear Part 3: Specification for Safety Footwear.

The purpose of Standard AS/NZS 2210.3 is to provide manufacturers and users with the requirements for Safety

footwear intended for use in workplace applications. Safety footwear that has the qualities of this standard

incorporates features to protect the wearer from injures that could arise through accidents. Safety footwear certified to

this standard must be fitted with toe caps that are designed to give protection against impact when tested at an energy

level of at least 200J and against compression when tested at a compression load of at least 15kN.

that could arise through accidents. Protective footwear certified to this standard must be fitted with toe caps that are

designed to give protection against impact when tested at an energy level of at least 100J and against compression

when tested at a compression load of at least 10kN.

Due to the high instance of foot injury in the workplace, choosing the right shoe for the job is extremely important.

Foot injuries sustained in the workplace can cause both short and long term problems and can be worsened over time.

The best way to ensure that the correct safety footwear is being selected is by referring to the Australian standards,

which contain detailed information and advice on the selection, care, and use of safety, protective and occupational footwear.

The body uses natural methods to decrease the forces of impact and absorb shock in the lower part of the body. Generally, it is considered that a shoe is required to reduce the forces further.

As an employee, you can maintain your foot health. Here’s how:

• Weargoodqualityworksocksand change them every day.

• Ensureyoursafetyfootweariscomfortable. Good quality, well-fitted safety footwear should not be uncomfortable and will need very little breaking-in time.

• Recognisethatcomfortablesafety footwear will reduce fatigue and keep you fresher and alert longer.

• Beawareofthehazardsinyourworkplace. If you have concerns about foot safety, alert your employer or safety officer. Make sure your shoes fit properly and that you wear appropriate shoes for your workplace.

• Remember,feetshouldn’thurt.Sore feet are a sign of a problem.

As an employer you can prevent foot problems at work:

• Ensuretherightfootwearisusedfortherightjob.Therearemanybrands, designs and types of safety footwear available. Ask the manufacturer or supplier to advise on the correct footwear for use.

• Comfortablesafetyfootwearincreasesproductivityandcreatesahappier work place.

• Haveyouremployeetryonthefootweartomakesuretheshoeorbootis the correct size and fits comfortably. Good quality safety footwear should not be uncomfortable if correctly fitted.

• Promotefoothealthinyourworkplace,especiallyduringFootHealthWeek(mid-October).

• Contactapodiatristtogiveatalkonfootcaretoemployees.

• Encourageyourstaffmemberstoreportfootproblems,howeverminor (e.g. safety shoes that rub).

• Lookatthefoothealthrecordofyourcompany-multiplefootcomplaints may suggest the workplace itself is creating foot problems.

• Doa‘FootRiskAssessment’intheworkplace-lookforwaystominimisetheburdenonyouremployees’feet.(Apodiatristmaybeable to assist you with assessing workplace foot risks).

• Emphasisetothesafetyofficeroroccupationalphysicianthatfootcomplaints should be taken seriously.

• Ifyouremployeeswearsafetyshoes,askyourself:Dowestockanadequate range of safety shoes to suit every staff member? If not, out-sourcing the supply and fit of safety shoes may be more cost-effective.

• Allowemployeesacrossoverperiodwhentheyexchangetheiroldsafety shoes for a new pair.

New Gumboot Range What makes them so good?

Blundstone’s three new industrial grade gumboots have a host of new features.The new PVC upper features protective moulded patterning which provides greater abrasion resistance and greater ankle support.

The new tread pattern has been designed specifically to provide increased slip resistance and allow easier cleaning/ dirt removal with cleats that are angled to reduce the build-up of mud and other foreign materials.

Underfoot comfort is taken to another level with the inclusion of the xtreme comfort footbed with PORON®XRD™ heel and forepart inserts. PORON®XRD™ absorbs up to 90% of energy from the impact of a step.

The range is fitted with the widest fit steel toe caps available. All the styles have a plush knitted lining, reinforced ankle, heel & instep, a rear kick-off lip and a wide fit in the calf area.

So, all this adds up to great convenience and super comfort.

The 028 features an internal moulded PORON®XRD™ metatarsal guard which is breathable, flexible and lightweight allowing much greater freedom of movement than steel metatarsal guards - without any loss of protection.

A steel midsole provides superior underfoot penetration resistance in the 024 and 028 styles.

Blundstone has been manufacturing gumboots at its Tasmanian site for nearly 25 years and it is now considered to be a world leader in the development of new technologies within industrial waterproof boots.
