“Soul Food”

2018 ANNUAL REPORT BY PASTOR MIKE HOLLAND

We promote ourselves as an Open and Affirming Congregation for all peo-ple. Our motivation comes from our understanding and experience of Christ, and what it means to be ethical, compassionate, peace and justice loving Christians. Our goal is to

be inclusive, not exclusive. We welcome di-versity. Such values drive our ministries. For years, one focus has been on offering hospitality and safe space to those of differ-ing sexual orientations and identities. It still is. However, in the past year, we have also given greater attention to the issue of racism, America’s great historical sin. The effects and consequences of centuries of institution-al and personal racism is still seen today in too many stories about the mistreatment of African Americans by the justice system, schools and businesses. Fifty years after Martin Luther King Jr and the Civil Rights Movement, we still have so much work to do to raise consciousness, ours and others, around this issue. Thanks to two of our small group ministries, PB&J and the Monday Night Study Group, for taking the lead for us on addressing the issue of racism. Our uniquely inclusive church continues to attract high numbers of visitors each year. At least 400 people attended our church for the first time over the past twelve months. His-torically, about 5% of our visitors, 20 people, will eventually become members. In 2016-17, we had 43 people join our church, includ-ing confirmands, a record. For the 2017-18 Church year, we had 8 people join our Church. Averaged together, that’s 25 people

a year. With our new Audio-Visual System and a renewed commitment to using social media to reach out to more people who might appreciate our church beliefs and practices, there’s a good chance we will have even more visitors next year. So, turn on your visi-tor radar on Sunday mornings and reach out to the new faces. This past year was also one of our best in memory for stewardship and financial giving. Between members, fundraisers, groups and events that use our facilities, we ended with a surplus. Don’t worry, there are plenty of good causes in the church and in the com-munity in which to invest extra funds. I want to thank everyone for their generosity. One concern. We conclude our Church Year with a sick and injured pastor: yea, me. In my first twenty years as your pastor, I never had to claim a day or Sunday off for illness. I have made up for it this spring. Multiple viruses, Bell’s Palsy, back pain and numb-ness in my feet have limited my ministry. I’m learning patience and empathy for others who also suffer from debilitating injuries and diseases. Prayers are appreciated. I so love this church and being your pastor, and look forward to another exciting year. Peace and blessings,

Pastor Mike

Latest update: Pastor Mike is expected to remain on

disability leave, at least thru the month of July. Your

prayers for his continuing recovery are appreciated.

GUEST SPEAKER: Harry “Kip” Kipp

In Pastor Mike’s absence, several guest speak-ers have been scheduled for June and July. Rev Day, Rabbi Stern and Pastor Kel are well known to us, but who is “Kip” Kipp? Below is his bio: ———————————— A twenty-three year resident of Newport Beach, Kathy and I have four children ages 28, 26, 24 and 17 (three girls, one boy). We have also been active members for twenty-three years of Corona del Mar Community Church, Congregational UCC. I have held a variety of board and commit-tee leadership positions and served as Modera-tor for five years. Kathy is the Minister of Youth and Family at the church. I have a strong resonance with one of the central tenants of the Protestant faith; “The Priesthood of All Believers”, and with that reso-nance comes a deep desire to facilitate and nurture environments for each of us to live into God’s calling for our lives individually, and col-lectively as faithful communities. Through this belief, I know I have been in ministry for a long time, but the call to vocation-al ministry led to Fuller Theological seminary and the “Member In Discernment” process leading to ordination in the UCC in the near future.

——————— Kip was born in Baltimore and educated at the Uni-versity of Delaware (BA Psychology and Communica-tions) and Fuller Theological Seminary (MDiv).

SUNDAY June 10TH

After worship service, Jack Provencio will be leading an Adult Forum

to talk to us about the Family Promise or-ganization. He will be speaking about the organization itself, how ChOTF adopted this program as one of our ministries, and how the ministry functions within our church. ChOTF has a long history of sup-porting Family Promise and Jack would like to invite everyone to come and learn more about this important ministry.

CHRISTIAN ED MINISTRY:

KEL’S KORNER

During Sunday School, in the beginning part of

the year, the Junior High class was discussing

the fact that their schools now taught a minimal

amount of home economics, auto shop and sim-

ilar classes. The group was expressing their dis-

pleasure with the situation and wished they had

an opportunity to be learning what they called

“life skills”. Following up on this discussion,

the Junior High teachers and I thought to give

them what they were asking for and have devel-

oped some life skill lessons.

We began last month and thought that cooking

was a good starting point. So far the group has

gone to the grocery store with a shopping list

and a budget and returned with the ingredients

for French Toast which they made for them-

selves and for Fellowship time. They have also

helped in the kitchen with the Easter pancake

breakfast; they have made scones from scratch,

as well as ramen noodles with chicken. They

rounded out the month by making and serving

homemade pizza for Fellowship Hour.

Cooking is the first of many growth opportuni-

ties we hope to bring this class and we would

love to have some help. We are putting out an

invitation to anyone who would wish to come

share some of their skills with this or any of our

Sunday School classes.

Blessings, Pastor Kel

Mother’s Day Bouquets

Spring was certainly in the air on Mother’s Day as we welcomed being part of Western Service Workers annual floral fundraiser. WSW brought several buckets of flowers and our youth and teachers had a marvelous time making beautiful bouquets which were available to the congregation for donation, after worship. Over 50 bouquets were taken with generous do-nations being given. Everyone enjoyed having WSW here and we looking forward to having the back next year.

Youth Sunday

This year's Youth Sunday rocked the house as our youth brought forth the message at they are the voice of the next generation. That they wish to create and live in a world of love, equality,

acceptance and unity. They expressed the desire to bring this world about through acts of peace-ful protest and making places churches, schools and other public places safe again. The youth chose specific and familiar songs to help deliver their message, which added great life and energy into the service. All of our young people did a great job and we look forward to what they have to share with us next year.

OC Pride Parade Believe it or not, the OC Pride Parade is only a few weeks away. It will be held on Saturday, June 23rd, in downtown Santa Ana and the church will again be walking in the parade and sponsoring a table. We had a great group turn out last year and we hope to see even more this year. If you are interested in participating with us in the event, please contact Pastor Kel or Carmen Mercado

HEALTH AND WELLNESS CORNER…

The sound of therapy

Music soothes the savage breast, the saying goes. Can it also soothe the symptoms of depression? Much research has confirmed that music has both psychological and physio-logic effects. While scientists can now see via medical imag-ing some of the changes in the

brains of people listening to Beethoven or Elvis, music is a very complex stimulus, and the ways it works on us remain largely elusive Recently German researchers analyzed finding from 28 studies of music therapy which included 1,810 partici-pants. The studies took very different approaches, from having depressed patients simply listen to music to en-couraging them to participate in singing or instrumental music therapy. The trials also employed different styles of music. Overall, 26 of the 28 studies found statistically significant reductions in depression levels associated with music therapy. Among studies that used the Geriatric Depression Scale to measure depression, music was associated with 43 percent improvement in symptoms. Because studies varied so widely, drawing conclusions about the best music of music was difficult. Groups music therapy ses-sions were slightly more effective at easing depression than individual sessions. Participants ages 60 and older had greater improvements in depression scores than younger participants, according to the authors who pub-lished their findings in Frontiers in Psychology. Music therapy, in general, appears to offer a promising adjunct to conventional therapy for depression, espe-cially for patients with mild to moderate depression. Still, more research is needed to determine which types of music therapy might best benefit people with depres-sion. How about joining our choir to enhance your mental health?

HONORING DAD BY WHATEVER NAME HE MAY BE CALLED

Ed note: Father’s Day is coming up, so in honor of dear old dad, I borrowed the following history from the internet:

* * * * * * * * * * * * Today we look into the history of Father’s Day. Sadly, retail-ers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have bastardized the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was supposed to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities, now is used to sell chili pepper ties and shop vacs. Hopefully by understanding why the concept of Father’s Day was created, we can better celebrate and honor the fathers who raised us.

The History of Father’s Day in the United States There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listen-ing to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (She would proba-bly be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention). Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To

show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June. The other story of the first Father’s Day in America hap-pened all the way on the other side of the country in Fair-mont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men. While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest propo-nents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge rec-ommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

This Father’s Day, don’t just buy your Pops a “World’s Best Dad” mug. Write him a card expressing some of the things you love and admire about him. Nothing mushy. Just tell him that you’re glad to be his son or daughter.

Habitat OC Celebrates the Framing of Two Homes in Tustin

On a beautiful Saturday morning in Tustin, something great happened. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County came together in partnership with City of Tustin and The Catholic Coalition to frame two homes for veteran families. Over the past year, the Catholic Coalition raised $150,000 for the build of this development. They presented the check to Habitat OC President/CEO Sharon Ellis during the ceremony. What really tugged at everyone’s heart strings was hearing from the daughter of the future homeowner. She made her way to the podium and with a big smile said, “I c a n ’ t w a i t t o h a v e m y o w n r o o m ! ” With the support of donors and volunteers like you, Habi-tat OC will continue its mission of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live, helping families like the Garcia's gain strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. ~Kimberly Perez .

Hearts & Minds

In the USA we think of ourselves as classless. Yet class is an economic division with social realities, identities, opportunities and repressions. Class makes us comfort-able around certain things and people and uncomforta-ble around those who don't share our similar codes of how to act, what to say or what is important - in some-one running for office for instance. I treasure that our church is working for a just and equitable world for all people. In our Hearts and Minds circle we share feelings about what confuses and divides us as well as what brings us joy and hope. It's a way to get our minds and hearts clear in a confidential space where we speak and listen respectfully to others. Please consider joining us

Do you know who/what CWF is?

CWF stands for Christian Women’s Fellowship. We meet on Wednesdays from 10:00 – 2:00 at which time we work on projects like making the Prayer Bears that we send to people in our congregation going through hard times to remind them that their church family is thinking about them. We also sell them so that you can send them to family and friends as well. We make baby quilts to give to babies of the church when they are baptized or dedicated. We always have a big quilt in process and have raffled them off in the past. Other members bring their own projects from home. Of course there is a lot of fellowship taking place as projects are being worked on each Wednesday. We use the money that we have raised from selling our hand made products to donate to various charities each year. Over the years that has included not only outside charities but also projects that help to meet special needs within our congregation. We also collect food for Southwest Community Center, adopt a family for Christmas and collect pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House. We would love to have you join us even if you don’t consider yourself very crafty. Just pack a lunch and come to the Fireside room in the Fellowship Hall on any Wednesday. Hope to see you soon. ~Lynn Stiegler

WHY WE SELL OLIVE OIL,

COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE And Why You Should Buy It

For newcomers to Church of the Foothills, the Fair Trade Corner and its display of coffee, chocolate, olive oil, herbs, and the occasional T-shirt & sticker, may seem an anomaly. Actu-ally, it is an opportunity to promote justice. Fair Trade products come from third world countries and are purchased directly from the labor source: the farmer, the artisan, the laborer who produced or made the goods. When we buy Fair Trade items we are standing in solidari-ty with people who are working for their own survival.

When we buy Fair Trade products, we are actualizing our faith. Proceeds from Fair Trade sales fund projects for the Peace, Benevolence and Justice Ministry.

Full Disclosure: The T-shirts and bump-er stickers we sell aren’t “Fair Trade’, but they do promote peace & justice!

POET’S CORNER...

BEDTIME PRAYER A grandfather was going by his little granddaughter's room one night when he saw her kneeling beside her bed with head bowed and hands folded, repeating the alphabet. "What are you doing?" he asked her. "I'm saying my pray-ers," she replied, "but I couldn't think of just what I wanted to say. So I'm just saying all the letters of the alphabet, and God can put them together any way He thinks best." ~ via George Goldtrap Ormond-by-the-Sea

IT’S JUNE: A KIDS EYEVIEW OF MARRIAGE Lowell Yoder of Holland, OH, passed along these kids' obser-vations on marriage: Asked how do you decide whom to marry, Kristen, age 10, replied, "No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before. You get to find out later who you're stuck with." Asked what most people do on a date, Martin, age 10, replied, "On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date." Asked how a stranger can tell if two people are married, Derrick, age 8, replied, "You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids." —————————————————— And, finally this: The prospective father-in-law asked, "Young man, can you support a family?" The groom-to-be replied, "Well, no sir, I was just planning to support your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend for your-selves." ~George Goldtrap Ormond-by-the-Sea, FL

LIFE LESSON IN A TROUBLED TIME I will laugh at the world. And how can I laugh when con-fronted with man or deed which offends me so as to bring forth my tears or my curses? Four words I will train myself to say until they become a habit so strong that immediately they will appear in my mind whenever good humor threatens to depart from me. These words, passed down from the an-cients, will carry me through every adversity and maintain my life in balance. These four words are: “This too shall pass”. And with my laughter all things will be reduced to their proper size. I will laugh at my failures and they will vanish in clouds or new dreams; I will laugh at my successes and they will shrink to their true value. Never will I allow myself to be-come so important, so wise, so dignified, so powerful, that I forget how to laugh at myself and my world. ~ Og Mandino , American author
