The Cave Creek Town Council, by unanimous vote Monday, approved a resolution making a recommendation to APS regarding their preferred route for a 69 kv line that will be installed to connect the Gavilan Peak substation in Phoenix to the Cave Creek substation.

Acknowledging that they ultimately have no say in the matter, the council, on the advice of legal counsel, took a proactive approach in offering a written opinion letting it be known which of the five options APS is considering would be the town’s preferred choice.

If Cave Creek has its way APS would go with the pink/blue routes on the APS maps that have been distributed in newsletters sent to impacted home owners. In council’s estimation the best route would be a line that exits the Cave Creek Substation in a northerly direction on Basin Road to its connection with Cave Creek Road then southwest on Cave Creek Road in order to avoid an adverse effect on existing residences on or near Skyline Drive.

“This isn’t a final step,” Mayor Vincent Francia said. “I wish it were, but we believe it’s an essential step in the

Desert Foothills Theater debuts season with Aristocats

“Talented and really darn cute,” is the way director Mitchell Vantrease describes the cast for Desert Foothills Theater’s production of Disney Aristocats Kids. The show runs Sept. 28 – Oct. 7 in the Black Box Theater at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center.

The season premiere for the theater centers around Duchess and her kittens, who have lived the high life in the home of Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, but are forced to find their way home after being abandoned in the countryside by the story’s

antagonist, Edgar, the butler. “People should be ready for

a show with some heart to it,” said Vantrease, who makes his directorial debut after serving as assistant director for last season’s production of Beauty and the Beast. “The story is about family and about how family can take on many different forms.”

The no-cut musical has a cast of 32, ranging in age from 8 – 14.

“I love working with kids,” Vantrease said. “In a sense I feel like a teacher. There might be a stigma with no-cut shows, but this is one of the most

talented groups I’ve seen. Some of our leads have 15-20 shows to their credit and even the inexperienced kids are learning quickly.”

The story, which was in movie theaters in the early 1970s, and the final film Walt Disney worked on before his death, hits on topics such as letting go of preconceived ideas about people, or in this case, cats.

Cactus Shadows football coach Greg Davis said there’s no secret as to what’s ailing his Falcons football squad.

After a disappointing 39-8 loss at the hands of Queen Creek, which dropped the Falcons to 1-3 Davis said his team simply needs to start executing the fundamentals of the game.

“For some reason we don’t seem to know how to tackle,” he said. “We watched film of them. We knew where they were going to go with the ball in a lot of situations based on the formations they were in and we still gave up big plays. It comes down to 1-on-1 matchups and our guys have to be able to make a play and get people to the ground.”

Queen Creek junior Matt Guida exploited the Falcons defensive miscues as he racked up 261 rushing yards on only 13 carries, good for 20 yards per attempt. The running back’s night included two rushing

touchdowns, one of which went for 94 yards. He also set up another score with a 71-yard run.

“Way too many arm tackles,” Davis said. “We’re giving up some demoralizing plays. I think we’ve got the talent to be a good team, but until we play with confidence we’re going to struggle.”

While the coach lamented his team’s inability to tackle, he had plenty of issues with his offense, which didn’t score until the game’s final minute, when senior R.J. Anderson lofted a touchdown pass to senior Connor Folts.

“We have some good plays where we get eight yards, but then we seem to hurt ourselves with penalties,” Davis said. “When we don’t hurt ourselves we have a chance to be pretty good, but we can’t overcome all these penalties and dropped passes.”

Fellowship Campus in Anthem will be the site of a benefit concert for families adversely affected by the July 31 monsoon storm. A number of families experienced flood damage after five inches of rain fell in a little more than an hour during a storm which also included sustained winds in excess of 50 miles per hour.

The concert, set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, will be highlighted by the performance of Anthem recording artist Josh Foster. Foster, who regularly performs acoustic and rock sets at Martini Ranch, has volunteered to perform for free and also recruited Shari Rowe, a country, pop and rock artist and Kinman, a rock and light rock band to perform as well.

“A number of families were impacted to some degree by the flood, but the ones hit hardest are still facing ongoing expenses,” said Doug Clark, a member of the church and an event organizer. “We want to continue to help them get back on their feet.”

Donations will be taken at the door. Beer and wine along with popcorn will be available for purchase.

Thrivent Financial has agreed to match the money collected at the event up to $1,500.

Clark reminds people that the event is open to everybody.

“You don’t have to be a member,” he said. “In fact most of our members haven’t met the families that were adversely affected. We just think this event exemplifies what Anthem is all about, neighbors helping neighbors get through tough times.”

These selections will be announced to the media, and these photos will then go on public display for viewing and voting for the “People’s Choice Award.” The photos will be shown at the Cave Creek Museum from Nov. 1-9 and the Land Trust’s booth at the Cave Creek Bicycle Festival on Nov. 10. The photos will then move to the Desert Foothills Library on Nov. 12. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will end on Nov. 16, but the display will remain at the Library through early December. Voting will also be available on the Land Trust’s Facebook page. Community members are invited to visit, vote and enjoy these wonderful photos.

The photographer’s top picks and the People’s Choice Award winner will be announced at an awards reception to be held at the Desert Foothills Library on Dec. 5. All photos will be used in the 2013 Black Mountain Photo Contest calendar, which will be unveiled at that reception. Calendars will be available for sale after that reception – just in time for holiday gift-giving.

The coveted cover of the calendar will be the People’s Choice Award-winning photograph. Photographs oriented horizontally are best for the calendar format, although one vertical photo will be selected for an interior feature.

The 2012 contest drew 70 submissions with winning entries, that were included

“He is sort of a suave cool cat, but even though they have different lives he feels like he should help them,” the 14-year-old freshman at Pinnacle High School said.

Having lived a life of privilege, Duchess, played by Meagan Multz, is concerned about accepting his assistance, asking if he eats out of dumpsters.

“I like playing her because she’s very prim and proper,” Multz said.

Eventually she and her kittens are won over by O’Malley and they begin their adventure back to Paris.

In directing the show, Vantrease said its is taking him back to his childhood.

“It was one of my favorites growing up,” he said. “The artists have made some great backdrops,” he said. “My vision is for it to have a cartoonish look with video projections and bright colors.”

Multz said she really enjoys the dancing in the play, particularly in the opening. The musical numbers include Disney favorites “The Aristocats,”

“Scales and Arpeggios” and “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat.”

She said she’s excited overall for the opportunity.

“I have been in a number of shows, but usually I’ve been with an older cast,” she said. “In this one I’m with a mostly younger cast so I’m getting an opportunity to play a bigger part. I think it’s a cute story people will enjoy.”

Reeves said he likes the jazz flavor of some of the dances

revolving around the alley cat lifestyle.

“That’s different,” he said. “I really like it. “

The run of the show begins with a 7 p.m. performance Sept. 28 and continues with two matinee performances with 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. shows on Sept. 29. The following weekends bill includes a 7 p.m. performance Oct. 5, a 2 p.m. performance Oct. 6, a 7 p.m. performance Oct. 6 before the closing show at 2 p.m. on Oct. 7.

process. We need to have our voices heard.”

Francia noted Cave Creek’s opinion isn’t the only one which will be considered as Scottsdale, Phoenix, Carefree, Maricopa County along with the State Land Department all have vested interest in the project.

Francia said the town tried to be as clear as possible as to their position both for their most favored option and their least preferable option while not being too demanding. He explained that being too restrictive in their resolution might cause APS to disregard their requests entirely. He also said there is a balancing act to be maintained in keeping alliances with other entities involved with the project intact.

APS indicates that the new line is needed in order to provide a backup to avoid the likelihood of brownouts during peak usage times.

Many in the audience indicated they have no issues with their service and would prefer not to have any new lines installed.

Francia said that in his talks with APS the APS engineers would be content with that request, but that APS attorneys, for liability issues, indicated

that wasn’t an option.The question about the

possibility of burying lines came up. Legal counsel representing Cave Creek said APS would be more than happy to bury lines, but either the customers or the town would have to come up with the difference to pay for the project.

Francia indicated that he has been told burying the lines would cost approximately $10 million.

Another member of the audience asked whether APS would reimburse home owners for devaluation of their properties.

Legal counsel indicated similar arguments hold water in some states, but based on the Arizona laws wouldn’t have standing locally.

The resolution states the Town specifically opposes the proposed routes that extend to the west, from the intersection of Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway, specifically the Cloud Road route (the gray route) would disturb and negatively impact the enjoyment of residential neighborhoods in the area; the Carefree Highway route (the purple route) would similarly negatively impact residential properties abutting Carefree Highway, including the Estado de Cholla and Whispering Hills developments, as well as

environmentally sensitive lands in the area.

An attorney representing Rancho Verde Del Rio addressed council, explaining they have received no information from APS and believe properties in the new development would be adversely affected by power lines if Cave Creek’s preferred route were to be selected.

Rancho Verde Del Rio is located approximately .25 miles south on Basin Road.

Henry (Skip) M. Morton, Jr. of New River died August 30, 2012 at the age of 59. Morton Jr. was born to Pauline (Sornberger) Morton and Henry M. Morton on May 30, 1953 in Bristol, CT. and raised in Plainville, CT. He and his wife, Karen (Larson) Morton of Southington, Ct were married February 15, 1980.

The couple moved to Phoenix in 1984 and settled in the New River/Desert Hills area. Skip became an active part of the community, coaching little league and middle school baseball. He owned and operated the family construction company, Copper State Custom Homes, LLC which has been passed down to his son, Craig Morton and will continue on in Skip’s loving memory. He enjoyed sand duneing, desert riding, hunting, fishing, camping and the beach.

He is survived by his loving

wife of 32 years, Karen (Larson) Morton; 2 sons, Craig Morton, 27 and Eric Larson, 27; two granddaughters; and his sister Deborah (Morton) Taggett.

A memorial service and reception took place at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Glendale.

In his first start of the season junior Trevor Mills threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-19 passing.

Both touchdown receptions went to senior Isaiah Huston. Huston had five catches for 88 yards and also added 118 punt return yards on four attempts.

In 2005, Deer Valley voters first approved a Capital Override for $7.5 million per year for seven years. This funds crucial and essential resources that you see in the students’ classrooms such as textbooks and computers, co-curricular and extracurricular activities including Fine Arts, sports without charging a fee, and updating our aging buses which transport students to and from schools and activities.

The Override voters approved in 2005 will expire at the end of the next school year. This past May, the Deer Valley Unified School District’s Governing Board unanimously called for a Capital Override for the upcoming November ballot. This is a continuation of the Override and not a tax increase to homeowners. If the Override does not pass in November, Deer Valley will lose $52.5 million from its budget over the next seven years which will drastically reduce funding and will impact the resources provided to your students.

As the parent of a child who has grown up and will soon graduate from this “A” rated district (one of top five in Maricopa County), I urge the entire community to vote “YES” for this important initiative. As our government continues to cut funding to schools yet expect our children to be productive citizens in a global economy, these Overrides provide the necessary resources to keep our children competitive in the workplace.

One of the major initiatives covered by the Override is technology — it is no secret that the jobs of the future center on keen understanding of technology. Our children deserve every opportunity we can offer them to work towards their dreams. This includes providing the tools necessary to fuel their imaginations and ideas.

The benefits to our children are obvious, but what may not be as clear are the benefits to the community. The Arizona housing market is still

struggling, and as potential residents make key decisions about where to live, good schools are at the top of their list. Naturally, as a community grows with diverse members and families, businesses will join them in those environments. Maintaining the solid reputation of a quality education that Deer Valley has established is critical to the economic rebound of our communities. Additionally, more solid communities can help to increase property values.

As I mentioned before, my child will graduate in 2013, so my motivation is strictly in regards to the children that will continue to thrive in the district. I want to support his dream of becoming a math teacher by working tirelessly to provide a district that he will want to work in.

Deer Valley parent urges voters to support override

The 8th Annual Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade and Family Picnic will be held at 10 a.m., on Nov. 10 in Anthem. Family activities including games, entertainment and a food court, which will be available from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

In 2011 the parade drew almost 100 military, civic and historic units with more than 1800 marchers. Grand Marshals this year will be Dave Woellner, a Prisoner of War during World War II, and Thomas Kirk, a Prisoner

of War during the Vietnam Conflict. Parade organizers are also seeking other local POWs to participate.

The Daisy Mountain Veterans (DMV) organization is a non-profit group comprised of American Legion Post 128, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12031 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 128, all based in Anthem. The purpose of the parade is to honor, support and thank all those who have worn our nation’s uniform. All donations are used to

Fundraiser goes off without hitch

First thanks to all who helped with and bought ducks for our Duck Daze. Local non-profits were able to raise a total of better than $20,000 while attendees had a fun time. The hope is to continue this event so groups in Anthem to raise needed funds to continue their work.

A very special thanks to the Daisy Mountain Fire Department, the Anthem Rotary, the North Valley Posse, Purr-idse, Dance Motion, Chrons and Colitis Foundation, H.O.P.E., Karmann and Kompany, Dance Artistry, Anthem K9 Search and Rescue and the Phoenix K-9 Unit.

Informational booths, a play area with Bounce Houses and games for the kids along with a silent auction also were held. The Dance groups performed and food and drink as well as ice cream was available thru Angel Ice Cream. The hope is to double or triple ducks and non profits for next year. This year’s event was hosted by Anthem Pets/Jackass Acres K-9 Korral Dog Park.
