dry set of clothing, a camera, a snack as well as drinks.

While the night time event is one of the more unique offerings at the lake Gerber said two kayak trips a month are offered, with a variety of destinations around the lake being explored.

“We’ll go birding, or take them to an old plane wreck, or to some Indian ruins,” he said. “There are a lot of fun options and then there is always the chance to see wildlife. The burros are pretty common, but we’ll see ducks, blue herron, sometimes a coyote, javelina or even deer. The animals aren’t spooked nearly as easily by kayaks as they are by motor boats or people on foot so a lot of times we’re able to get a lot closer than you normally would.”

Those that show up will be entered into a drawing for a family 4-pack of tickets to Wet n’ Wild Phoenix Water Park.

Gerber said there are a variety of other activities available throughout the year including an archery class he said is very

popular as well as something called a Hike and Splash, an event that offers both a chance to do a short hike before cooling off in the lake.

For information on the full moon event or any other activities out the lake call Gerber at 602-372-7460 ext. 202 or go to Maricopa.gov/parks/lake_pleasant.

Submitted photosThe full moon ride at Lake Pleasant has drawn upwards of 90 people. The latest one is set for Sunday evening.

through a tough time,” Steele said. “Maybe one of the two in the couple has lost a job and then they have a child that all of sudden needs dental work, but they don’t have insurance. We have a dentist that’s willing to work with us for a cost of $75.”

Along with offering services FTF sets up at need families with training in a variety of areas.

Anaiis Ballesteros representing the Association for Supportive Child Care was handing out information at the event.

“We have 16 different programs to enhance child care,” she said. “We can offer resource referrals to parents on a variety of topics. We have groups that have classes educating them on crib safety, car seat safety, making their homes safer for children.”

Ballesteros said for some

of the group in attendance Thursday’s event was an introduction to the community.

“This has been a good response,” she said. “We’ve found that people have been looking for the kinds of services we provide, but simply didn’t know where to look. I think this will be the first of many similar events.”

The Deer Valley First Things First Family Resource Center is located at Anthem Elementary School, located at 41020 NE Freedom Way in Anthem.

The group’s mission is to provide support and strengthen families living within the DVUSD boundaries and the North Phoenix Region of First Thing First.

STAFF REPORT

From high winds and heavy rain to lightning and flash floods, monsoons deliver some of the most hazardous weather Arizonans experience all year. As monsoon season begins later this week, AAA would like to help Arizonans prepare before these extreme summer storms arrive.

“Because of the rapid nature of a monsoon, it’s imperative that homeowners and motorists are prepared regardless of where they are when a storms strikes,” said Brad Oltmans, vice president of insurance for AAA Arizona.

To help Arizonans prepare for Monsoon 2012, AAA would like to offer the following tips to protect your home, prepare your car and to stay safe on the road:

At home, consumers should:

Review your homeowner’s policy to ensure your home is protected against monsoon damage. Standard home insurance policies do not have flood coverage. Nationwide, 30 percent of flood insurance claims each year are filed by people who don’t live in high risk zones, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Secure outdoor furniture, fixtures and garbage cans. Even in weak storms, these can easily be blown over, causing damage to the object, your home, or people.

Stake and prune trees. Drive wooden stakes at least two feet into the ground, and secure

young trees to them. For larger, more mature trees, trim down heavy or dead branches. These branches can damage your house by striking it in the wind or falling on it.

Prepare for electrical surges and outages. Protect sensitive electronics, such as computers, gaming systems, or televisions by plugging them into surge protectors. Also, keep flashlights and fresh batteries on hand.

On your car, drivers should inspect:

Windshield wipers. Direct exposure to the sun coupled with Arizona’s dry heat can cause wipers to crack and fall off.

Head and brake lights. Bad weather creates poor visibility making it difficult to see other drivers, and difficult for other drivers to see you.

Brakes. Faulty brakes can lengthen your stopping distance, so ensure your brakes are in proper working order so you can stop safely.

Tire tread. As tread wears, tires lose their ability to grip a wet surface. To ensure you have adequate tread, place a quarter head first into the grooves of your tire. If you can see any space above Washington’s head, it’s time to replace the tire.

Insurance policy. Motorists generally need a comprehensive policy to be protected against storm damage. Liability coverage only, for example, does not typically cover hail, wind, and rain damage.

On the road, drivers should:

Slow down. Roads become slippery when water mixes with oil, dirt and grease making it harder to control a vehicle.

Do not tailgate. Stopping distances are greater on wet, slippery roads.

Allow extra time to get to your destination. Traffic is heavier in bad weather.

Refrain from driving through flooded areas. It only takes a few inches of rushing water to move a vehicle. Arizona’s “Stupid Motorist Law” allows agencies to collect up to $2,000 for water rescues, if drivers get stuck after purposely drive in flooded areas.

Exercise patience. Inclement weather results in a higher than normal call volume for Roadside Assistance. This coupled with road closures and flooding, can lead to service delays.

If you get caught in a severe storm and cannot drive safely, completely get off the roadway and stop with your lights off. Lift your foot from the brake to ensure your brake lights are not lit. This will prevent other drivers from following your taillights, thinking you are still on the road. Never stop in the travel portion of the roadway.

One of the a r g u m e n t s advanced in support of gay marriage is that endorsing a gay romantic p a r t n e r s h i p with a

marriage license won’t impact traditional marriages. Last month, the New Mexico Court of Appeals threw a grenade at that claim.

A husband and wife in Albuquerque own a photography studio known as Elane Photography. They offer their services on a commercial basis and usually photograph significant life events, like weddings and graduations. However, they have a policy of only photographing events that are consistent with their Christian faith.

A lady sent an e-mail to Elane

Photography requesting pricing information and inquired whether a photographer would photograph her upcoming commitment ceremony. (New Mexico does not recognize gay marriage.) When Elane Photography confirmed that it would be a “same gender ceremony,” their representative politely declined the offer and stated they do not photograph same-sex couples.

In December 2006, this same lady filed a discrimination claim against Elane Photography with the New Mexico Human Rights Commission alleging that it had refused to offer its services to her because of her sexual orientation. The commission agreed with the customer and ordered the studio to pay $6,637.94 in attorneys’ fees and in court costs. The studio appealed in district court; but lost. The studio then appealed to the New

Mexico Court of Appeals. On appeal, the studio

argued that its actions were not discriminatory because it would have been willing to photograph the plaintiff in other contexts, such as a portrait photo. The studio also maintained that forcing their photographers to take pictures in violation of their religious belief violated their freedom of expression and their freedom of religion. The appellate court rejected all of these arguments.

While the decision is based primarily on New Mexico state law, it is perhaps significant that an appellate court, in a state that does not even recognize gay marriage, held a small business could be successfully sued for discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation for refusing to photograph a same-sex commitment ceremony.

Although the appellate

court rejected this argument, I agree with the studio that good photography is an art form and someone who supports gay marriage is likely to document such an event very differently than someone who is opposed to it. It is not, as one of the defendants noted, a “gumball machine” with coins in and pictures out.

The slippery slope arguments are easy to spot. If a government can force photographers to work on behalf of causes with which they disagree (in this case, gay marriage), then could bakers, dressmakers, videographers, and wedding coordinators suffer a similar fate? What about judges? What about church pastors?

Cases like this one certainly complicate the debate over gay marriage. Once a government policy recognizes something or endorses it with a license, opposing that

policy often becomes illegal. One commentator noted when discussing this case that it was “not a victory for anybody trying to convince religious conservatives that the government recognizing gay marriage won’t interfere with their own religious practices.” He then added, “It’s certainly not a victory for the freedom of association accorded by the First Amendment.”

The twenty page appellate opinion is available on-line. It is Elane Photography, LLC v. Willock, No. 30,203 (N.M. Ct. App. 2012)(Decided May 31, 2012). The studio is being defended by the Scottsdale based Alliance Defense Fund.

Can a business be forced to support a gay wedding?

Luck plays roll in haves and haves not W h e n e ve r

an overly

generous soul

praises me for

my alleged

“success,” I

thank them

and gently remind her (and

myself) of the unearned luck of

my life.

Consider the following: I

was born during the Great

Depression, after the nation’s

birthrate had reached a new low,

and I was one of approximately 11

people born that same year. This

meant that when I graduated from

high school, college admissions

offices — desperate to fill empty

dorms and classrooms —

were eagerly recruiting almost

anyone who wasn’t under

indictment or detox, and maybe

some who were.

This also meant that when I got out of college and the Marine Corps, and sought to enter the revered “private sector,” it was the decade of the 1960s, during which the gross national product of the United States was actually doubling — and because there were so few people in my generational cohort, for us lucky ones there were almost more jobs than there were young people to fill them.

Yes, through nothing I ever did or deserved, I was born an American in the United States to smart, loving, funny parents who loved each other and their children, and who expected their kids to do well in school, to go to college and to graduate. Despite rheumatic fever and other childhood diseases, I grew up healthy. Quite simply stated, through nothing I did, I won the lottery!

This all came back to me after I read Pete Wehner’s reaction to one question in the most recent “Trends in American Values: 1987-2012” by the respected Pew Research Center.

First, you should know that Pete Wehner served honorably in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, before becoming director of White House initiatives for George W. Bush. Take my word for it: Pete Wehner is a good guy who qualifies as an authentic “compassionate conservative” in his commitment to helping those who have not been winners in life’s lottery.

The Pew poll asked respondents if they agreed with the statement, “It is the responsibility of the government to take care of people who can’t take care of themselves.” In 1987, when Ronald Reagan was president, a big majority of Republicans — some 62 percent — agreed that government did

in fact have that affirmative responsibility to care for those much less fortunate. But in 2012, barely 40 percent of self-identified Republicans believe that government has the same responsibility toward our fellow Americans. By contrast, 75 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of political independents back the government’s responsibility to intervene.

Wehner wrote: “Taken literally, this question means a solid majority of Republicans” does not believe “government should take care of people who are suffering from dementia, Down syndrome, crippling disease or debilitating war wounds. ... Government has no affirmative duty to care for those who are defenseless, vulnerable, handicapped and have hit hard times through no fault of their own.”

Of course, Republicans, if asked, would overwhelmingly support aid to those wounded

in war. But I think the answer reflects two facts of our contemporary culture. First, the question politicians ask and we, voters, answer — “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” — is too self-centered and self-absorbed. The question we, citizens, ought to instead ask is: Are WE better off? Are the strongest among us more just? Are the weakest among us more secure?

“The measure of our progress,” as a genuinely great American leader reminded us, “is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much but whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”

The second fact? How truly lucky — that’s right, lucky — we who are able to take care of ourselves actually are.
