Proposal under discussion to annex planned Lennar development into Anthem

ANTHEM ndash The development of Anthem may be growing

Back in 2014 Lennar Homes brought forth a proposal regarding building 202 homes on the west side of Anthem north of the Daisy Mountain Post Office Those plans have been in development these homes would not have been part of the Anthem community as far as amenities or HOA Now discussions are underway to annex the development known as Circle Mountain Ranch into Anthem The potential annexation will be discussed in open meetings presented by Pulte on Sept 9 and Sept 14 6 pm both days at the Anthem

Civic Building The annexation will also be on the agenda of the Sept 16 Anthem Community Council Board of Directors meeting to be held at 630 pm also at the Anthem Civic Building

If annexed the planned Lennar development would become a joint LennarPulte project Pulte already has input into the design of the homes whether or not annexation is approved Pulte will ensure that the Lennar design fits the style of Anthem

In remembrance Sixth annual food drive

honors father lost in 911ANTHEM ndash Deborahrsquos father

William Steckman died in Tower One on Sept 11 2001 leaving his shocked grieving his loss Since then Deborah an Anthem resident has channeled her grief into honoring her father through acts of kindness For the sixth year shersquos running a food drive to benefit community families in need in honor of her fatherrsquos memory

Last yearrsquos food drive netted 600 pounds of food for needy families This year Deborah hopes to top that record All collected items will be

donated to the St Vincent de Paul food pantry and the Foothills Food Bank Collection boxes are located at Canyon Springs School 42901 N 45th Dr and Harper Physical

Monsoon storm causes power outages around Valley

NORTH VALLEY ndash A severe monsoon storm swept through the Valley on Monday night causing storm damage and power outages all over town

About 50000 people lost power due to the storm APS crews worked overnight to start getting electricity restored As of

mid-morning on Tuesday about 23000 people were still without power including over 1000 in New River Downed power lines on New River Road southeast of Fig Springs Road (pictured) caused outages for many local residents

The storm hit some areas

extremely hard and left others with little to no rain Anthem West sustained storm damage including downed trees due to heavy rain and battering winds Central Phoenix was hit hard with torn roofs and flooded roadways downtown

ANTHEM ndash The Anthem Parkside Community Association has announced the next community-wide garage sale dates The garage sale is once again divided into three zones each beginning at 7 am with the end time at the residentrsquos discretion

On July 27 Kendall presented her piano students in an evening recital at her home in Black Canyon City After the

JUDGE GERALD A WILLIAMSNORTH VALLEY JUSTICE OF

THE PEACEThe traditional paradigm for

judges is that we politely listen to both sides serve as a referee when necessary but donrsquot really attempt to provide much guidance The goal was to avoid saying anything that could be misinterpreted even remotely as helping one side As a result we became almost statues and litigants were left wondering what if anything they had done wrong

In Maricopa County the justice courts have decided to change the focus in civil cases to making sure that decisions are based on the merits of the case and not because someone who is representing themselves might be unfamiliar with either the law or with procedural rules This new focus may depending on the situation be controversial

For example if a judge tells a

litigant that they have failed to establish an important element of their case and then provides an opportunity to fill the gap the other side could become frustrated or angry However under this new approach it would be appropriate for a judge to ask something about a lack of evidence

ldquoSir the only evidence that you have given about the nature of your injuries is your testimony that when it rains your knee hurts a little That is not by

itself very strong evidence Do you have any other evidence about your injuriesrdquo

The goal is not to help one side or the other The goal is for the judge to reach the correct result by applying the law to the facts that were presented Some may feel that the judge is giving the other side legal advice but the judge is really just trying to

make sure that the judgment will be based on facts rather than what some might call a technicality

There have been many efforts to make courts especially justice courts more user-friendly over the last few years These include writing a set of rules for residential eviction actions and rewriting the regular rules of civil procedure into a set used in justice courts However these new philosophical changes will present some unique challenges because they require judges to balance competing interests In fact many lawyers already think that judges do too much to help people representing themselves

The Maricopa County Justice Court Best Practices Committee recently encouraged this paradigm shift by adopting a best practice guideline called ldquoEnsuring Access to Justice for Self-Represented Litigants in Civil Casesrdquo I have the honor of serving as chairman of that committee and it will be interesting to see how this new approach to judging turns out

hair There I have said it ndash all secrets are out ndash I am admitting to you Dear Readers that some of my ldquobeautyrdquo comes from a tube and a bottle Guess I am not alone But I have a grandson (hope you are not reading this column Sean) who has sort of gone off the deep end Suddenly all chemicals are bad and only natural and organic will do Of course he is probably right and we are killing ourselves with chemicals sprays cleaning and beauty products GMOs in the foods we eathellipthe list goes on and on Oh and we are also ruining the planet This bothers me the most

Sean has ldquogone greenrdquo and it better be natural or he wonrsquot use it or eat it When I told him some folks I know (me) like lipstick mascara gel nails and hair dye he said ldquoNo one needs any of thatrdquo Ha This is coming from a kid in his twenties who might not recognize his Grandmother if she went ldquonaturalrdquo Also red meat and dairy are on his hit-list Well I pointed out to him that his Great-Grandma Floss

is 93 years old survived lead-based paint insecticides hair perms eating red meat and butter and she seems to be okay

Sean is also big on taking lots of vitamins So I went to my doctor the other day and he said my cholesterol was a bit high and I should take Fish Oil I told him I would rather take an acid bath than take some health-food fad like fish oil tablets which so far have no scientific evidence that they do a darn thing He laughed and said ldquoYou crack me uprdquo Then he said I might take Vitamin D too since it seems every person in the world has ldquolow levelsrdquo Well I donrsquot take supplements There I have said it Now the emails will be flying my way and even my doctor will be calling me

I do agree that it is better to know what we are ingesting what dyes and chemicals we are using so we can make better choices Clearly we all realize we cannot keep polluting the air and water without grave consequences We donrsquot want a bunch of poison sprayed on our crops Honeybees are dying Wildlife is struggling There seems to be an epidemic of autism breast cancer and other illnesses at higher rates than ever before So I appreciate my grandsonrsquos efforts

I have tried going natural Like spraying peppermint to keep spiders away (doesnrsquot work) or putting cayenne pepper on plant leaves to keep the squirrels at bay (they could care less) and citrus in the barn to ward off flies (why bother)

And natural cleaning products are pretty good organic fruits and veggies are on my list and I only buy eggs from the neighbors who have wonderful healthy chickens

I was in the grocery store and witnessed a couple fighting over the organic fruit The man said anything ldquothick skinnedrdquo doesnrsquot need to be organic because according to scientists it is a waste of money Things like cucumbers are thin-skinned and they can absorb pesticides and should always be organic The wife yelled ldquoI only will eat organicrdquo and the husband screamed back ldquothatrsquos because you love to waste moneyrdquo People stop arguing in the produce section It may upset the tomatoes or those of us who are ldquothin-skinnedrdquo

I did overhear two ladies sort of sparring over eggs One lady was grabbing a dozen white eggs when the woman next to her said ldquoThose eggs are from abused caged chickens You need to buy Happy Eggs (a brand of brown eggs) that are healthier for you and the chickensrdquo The lady with the white eggs hissed ldquoI donrsquot have $475 for 10 eggs so chickens can be happyrdquo A few more words were exchanged but I moved on to the canned good section where I figured I would be safe from all conflicts and fist fights

Not so sure about that because my grandson claims everything in a can is ldquopoisonrdquo Oh yea grocery shopping can be a real drag these days when

you have to carefully read the labels watch people argue and wonder what chemicals you will be ingesting

Sean did call me and ask if I ever thought about using henna on my hair No And any more mention of hair coloring and I might be ldquoseeing redrdquo which is a lot worse than ldquobeing redrdquo Hmmmhellipmore research is required on how to live chemically-free I will report

Good lighting on stairways is especially important Light switches at both the top and bottom of stairs can help

Place a lamp within easy reach of your bed Put night lights in the bathroom hallways bedroom and kitchen Also keep a flashlight by your bed in case the power is out and you need to get up

Have handrails installed on both sides of stairs and walkways If you must carry something while walking up or down stairs hold the item with one hand and use the handrail with the other When yoursquore carrying something be sure you can see where your feet are stepping

Properly placed grab bars in your tub and shower and next to the toilet can help you avoid falls too Have grab bars installed and use them every time you get in and out of the tub or shower Be sure the grab

bars are securely attached to the wall

You might find it helpful to rearrange often-used items in your home to make them more accessible Store food boxes cans dishes clothing and other everyday items within easy reach This simple change could prevent a fall that might come from standing on a stool to get to an item

If you have fallen your doctor might suggest that an occupational therapist physical therapist or nurse visit your home These health care providers can assess your homersquos safety and advise you about making changes to prevent falls

ANTHEM ndash Lindarsquos WISH is making strides ndash literally ndash towards curing breast cancer once and for all

The 14th annual Lindarsquos WISH 5K RunWalk is set for Saturday Sept 26 at the Persimmon Golf Course in the Anthem Country Club Last year this non-profit organization was able to donate $15000 to breast cancer research and they hope to top that goal with this yearrsquos event Everyone is welcome to sign up and support the cause Proceeds will benefit the HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center

Lindarsquos WISHrsquos mission is to raise funds and awareness in order to find a cure for breast cancer In 2000 Linda Kacmarsky was diagnosed with breast cancer As she recovered she became determined to help find a cure for breast cancer She began walking in the yearly 3-Day 60-mile walks in New York raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research After Linda and her husband Frank moved to Arizona Linda continued to support the cause She signed up for the first 3-Day in Phoenix and began looking for teammates to join her She brought on 38 other ladies for the Phoenix 3-Day For six years she headed Team Wish bringing in over a million dollars for research The first Lindarsquos WISH walk took place in Anthem 14 years ago

ldquoIt started 14 years ago as the Ironwood Walk as four ladies at the Anthem County Clubrdquo Lindarsquos husband Frank Kacmarsky explained

Linda was known for giving comfort to others who had been diagnosed with cancer She took patients to doctorsrsquo appointments created meal

delivery circles and met with each patient giving them hope and encouraging them not to give up

Linda had another battle with cancer in 2010 Sadly she passed away that year leaving her friends family and community mourning her loss But her spirit and determination live on through Lindarsquos WISH

ldquoWe renamed the Ironwood Walk Lindarsquos WISH in her honorrdquo Kacmarsky said

Carol Ward has participated in every Lindarsquos WISH event

ldquoI started participating because of knowing Lindardquo Ward said ldquoI was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004rdquo She and Linda moved to Anthem at about the same time and became friends through church

Ward spoke of Lindarsquos ldquodrive and determinationrdquo

ldquoShe was not a figure you could ignorerdquo Ward said ldquoShe never gave uprdquo

Ward noted that you donrsquot have to be a runner or have special training to participate in the 5K runwalk

ldquoYou can go at your own pacerdquo she said

Kids join in the walk including little ones in strollers

Kacmarsky noted that last year a little boy ran with his mom he was the youngest runner The oldest participant was over 80 and had served as a Marine ndash he walked the whole course refusing to stop until he reached the finish line

Thanks to the hard work of medical researchers who are searching for a cure for cancer and to the hard work of volunteers like Linda who tirelessly fundraise progress has been made in cancer research

Kacmarsky discussedthe strides made in breast cancer research

ldquoTherersquos a lot more chance of recovery and of survivalrdquo Kacmarsky said ldquoWersquore still trying to come up with a curerdquo

Kacmarsky noted that the HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center is ldquoright in our neighborhoodrdquo Multiple HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Centers are located in the Valley with the closest being at the Sonoran Health and Emergency Center located at 33423 N 32nd Ave near Dove Valley Rd and the I-17

HonorHealth stresses that early detection is vital to fighting cancer and many of their current research projects work towards early detection

ldquoThe HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center is currently part of a Hologicreg imaging research study which focuses on better ways of breast imaging as well as early detectionrdquo said Sherry Gage RTRM clinical director of the HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center

Gage noted that the HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center recommends getting a baseline mammogram at age 35 and an annual screening mammogram beginning at age 40

ldquoEarly detection is keyrdquo Gage emphasized

As a cancer survivor and Lindarsquos WISH supporter Ward strongly agrees

ldquoThe availability is out thererdquo Ward said referring to the services women can get if they canrsquot afford a mammogram ldquoGet the mammogramsrdquo

Funds raised in the Lindarsquos WISH walk will support HonorHealthrsquos breast cancer research as well as patient care including financial assistance nutritional education genetics counseling transportation wigs prosthetics and specialized support groups for those impacted by breast cancer HonorHealth staff noted that funds raised by Lindarsquos WISH for HonorHealth will stay local and help those in need in the community

A coin challenge to raise additional funds for Lindarsquos WISH is running now through Sept 10 Boulder Creek and Sandra Day OrsquoConnor High Schools are battling to see who can raise the most MidFirst Bank will match $1000 if the schools raise over $2000 they get a bonus of $250

OrsquoConnor Cheer Coach Lauren Fetkenhier explained that each coin in the coin challenge is worth the points of the coin value ndash 25 cents = 25 points For each dollar thatrsquos brought in to OrsquoConnor for the coin challenge Boulder Creek will lose 100 points and vice versa So the schools are vying for donations and aiming to raise more in a friendly competition for a good cause If yoursquod like to donate to the coin challenge drop donations off to the school of your choice

ldquoWe were excited to take on this challengerdquo Fetkenhier said noting that this is the first year OrsquoConnor cheer has been involved in the coin challenge

Registration for the walkrun is now open All ages are welcome Entry fees are $30 per adult $10 for 12 and under or $75 per family ndash two adults and up to four children Register online at wwwLindasWishcom

I Know No Fear Camera In HandSHEA STANFIELDARTS COLUMNIST

Alfred Eisenstaedt one of Americarsquos most celebrated photojournalists once said ldquoWhen I have a camera in my hand I know no fearrdquo Local landscape photographer Thomas Baker could make a similar statement reflecting his journey toward his art

Growing up in New England Tom was a gifted student and an avid long-distance runner until one eventful night during his college senior year Tom was on his way to completing a degree in Accounting at the University of Connecticut when a fateful car accident would sidetrack his plans for his immediate future Sustaining numerous life-threatening injuries the initial prognosis was not promising Beyond the immediate concern for his survival his family prayed he would ultimately pull through to regain a ldquonormalrdquo life

Despite prediction he would never walk again not only did he walk but was also able to

resume running This brings to mind what we say here in the West ldquoYoursquore either making dust or eating dustrdquo Even before Tom moved to Arizona he had the ldquoattituderdquo ndash he was certainly going to be making the dust Persistence hard work and faith along with the expert care of medical and rehabilitation professionals paid off in gaining mobility Tom then went on to finish his Bachelors in Accounting from the University of Connecticut and a Masters in Finance from the University of Hartford within a few short years of his tragic accident

Soon after running 13 miles in a training run Tom was determined to take the next step attempting a marathon Tom trained until he was able to run in the Newport RI New York City the Marine Corps and Boston Marathons as simply a man that had no fear He then went on to combine his love of running and travel by participating in marathons in Germany Ireland and England Sadly in 1994 Tom met another setback when running with his track club in Connecticut a young man learning to drive hit him This incident set him back a few months before he was able to continue running this time in a few ultra-marathons one of which was in the Swiss Alps

Tom arrived in Arizona in 1999 with a number of achievements looking forward to new opportunities ahead He enrolled in a photography course and was instantly hooked He continued his education in photography

taking various workshops from Arizona Highways and other opportunities that allowed travel to a variety of locations with expert instruction Tom credits these experiences with ldquoexpanding his vision knowledge and skills I quickly realized that the camera equipment is secondary to the artistrsquos vision and skillsrdquo Tom has been a long-time student of local photographer Jerry Sieve through classes with Paradise Valley Community College According to Tom Jerry has created the awareness in him that timing is everything in capturing naturersquos most fleeting and majestic moments Tomrsquos insight that the human eye is much more sensitive than any camera or sensor and that the recognition of lighting conditions as well as its photographic implications is one skill Tom plans to further develop

ldquoThey (Pulte) want to keep Anthem looking like Anthemrdquo Fyke said

Pulte has a vested interest in Anthem as one of their most popular and vibrant communities Pulte has retained declarant rights in Anthem meaning that they have the right to annex developments in a 25-mile radius around Anthem However while Pulte has retained these rights they have not overruled the community and Board of Directorsrsquo opinions

ldquoPulte has always been a very very good partnerrdquo Fyke said He noted that the community and the Board can object to a project or annexation

ldquoPultersquos position in the past has always been lsquoYou have to get the Boardrsquos approval then you come to usrsquordquo Fyke explained

Thatrsquos where the upcoming meetings come in At the Sept 9 and Sept 14 meetings Pulte will present information to residents and take questions and address concerns directly Similar information will be presented at each meeting the two meeting dates are provided in case of scheduling conflicts so that all residents get the chance to share input The ACC Board of Directors will then discuss the annexation at their Sept 16 meeting residents can also give input at that meeting

The Boardrsquos discussions with Pulte over annexation will include possible changes to governing documents Pulte may be giving up some of the

rights they currently hold in Anthem This possibility has come about due to the Boardrsquos concerns about potential future annexation Giving up annexation rights would be a good-faith commitment from Pulte not to overburden Anthemrsquos amenities Pulte will remain involved in Anthem even if they do give up some of their current rights

Since ground hasnrsquot been broken for the development yet it is still in the early stages In an email response to a Circle Mountain Ranch status inquiry Lennar Division President Alan Jones indicated that Lennar is ldquostill at least a year away from starting in this communityrdquo

ldquoLennar is under contract to purchase this property and is excited about the opportunity to build in this desirable location in the Valleyrdquo Jones said

Since this development would be in the city of Phoenix as the community on the west side of the I-17 is the city is reviewing the site plan

ldquoIn April 2015 an application for preliminary site plan review was submitted to PDD (Planning and Development Department)rdquo noted Yvette Roeder Public Information Officer for the Phoenix Public Works Department ldquoThe proposed subdivision includes

202 lots Review comments were returned to the applicant in June 2015 for corrections The file is available for the public to view at the 2nd floor Site Development Counter or per appointment A public records request is needed to obtain copies of the informationplansrdquo

Roeder added that a street classification amendment was brought in last June but it was determined in August that the amendment was not needed and the application was then withdrawn

Since the homes are scheduled to be built whether or not Circle Mountain Ranch is annexed into Anthem some potential issues brought up when the development was first discussed are now moot One of the most significant and relevant issues now with the potential annexation is additional use of the Anthem Community Center If annexed Circle Mountain Ranch residents would pay the same dues all Anthem homeowners pay to the community and would have rights as Anthem homeowners to Anthemrsquos amenities which would add to the already busy community center The annexation would however avoid future issues with the homeowners using the private

Anthem park as they would be paying dues and would be within rights to use it

Overall from the financial point of view the annexation looks promising for Anthem

ldquoThe financials look good for us as a wholerdquo said Fyke

The Anthem Community Council is encouraging the community to attend the upcoming meetings to share their concerns and get the facts

ldquoThe ACC will advocate strongly for conditions that benefit the Anthem community and take into consideration the input from Anthem residents and impact on existing ACC amenities and programsrdquo the Council said in a release to

the community on Aug 27 ldquoThe ACC Board of Directors encourages residents to attend these scheduled meetings take the time and initiative to learn the facts about the annexation and not make speculations based exclusively on local or social media coveragerdquo

Fyke noted that Pulte has been a good partner to the community and that they aim to make this ldquoa very fair situation for all partiesrdquo They want Anthem to continue to thrive

ldquoTherersquos a reason they keep their name on the doorrdquo Fyke said ldquoTheyrsquore very proud of what they built hererdquo

has made quite a splash in the world of film ldquoTom at the Farmrdquo is Dolanrsquos fourth film a film that he wrote directed and performed in and is about a young man who arrives at a quiet farm for the funeral of his boyfriend only to find out that the grieving family was unaware that their son was gay Itrsquos a bit of a departure for Dolan who typically explores the deeper more personal aspects of love and relationships ldquoTom at the Farmrdquo is a slow burning subtle suspense thriller about love and infatuation and the control and seduction that attract people to one another

Tom (Xavier Dolan) arrives at a small farmhouse the childhood residence of his recently deceased boyfriend Guillaume At the funeral Tom encounters Guillaumersquos older brother Francis (Pierre-Yves Cardinal) an aggressive and homophobic man who is trying to keep his mother Agathe (Lise Roy) from finding out that Guillaume was gay Francis forces Tom into lying to Agathe a desperate attempt to keep a secret that becomes a peculiar point of manipulation and flirtation for Francis and Tom

Dolan displays early in the film that perceived expectations related to the narrative and characters arenrsquot going to play out like normal There is a sense of trepidation the moment Tom arrives at the farm an uneasiness that settles into repeated moments throughout the film The tone is at one

point dramatic and at another anxious moving at its most random times into realms of self-afflicted comedy but itrsquos never out of Dolanrsquos control In one instance Tom and Francis have a one-sided confrontation in a small bathroom with Francis bullying Tom into the corner This escalates into a frantic chase through field of crops a jarring change of pace that is filmed with a hyperactive camera chasing Tom in close-up ending with Francis physically beating Tom into submission Later on the two men dance an apprehensive tango that plays unexpectedly flirtatious for both in different ways Itrsquos these changes in narrative structure and style that make ldquoTom at

the Farmrdquo challenging at times Francis is abusive repeatedly yet Tom makes excuses for this behavior even staying with Francis when given the opportunity to leave Itrsquos erratic and only half the time makes sense Still in the capable hands of Dolan it somehow fits and works for the shifting structure

Gabriel Yared builds a romantically influenced score itrsquos exceptional and accommodates the changing perspective of the title character throughout the film There are some fine performances here as well Xavier Dolan builds a mysterious and lost quality with his portrayal of Tom Pierre-Yves Cardinal is intimidating as Francis a menace that is felt with every line of dialog

ldquoTom at the Farmrdquo is never what seems to be it rarely plays to the middle ground of storytelling but instead explores the boundaries of the themes it employs Xavier Dolan continues to grow and experiment as a filmmaker and ldquoTom at the Farmrdquo is the most accomplished of his catalog so far

Written by Adam Long Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield the DFT production is directed by Eric Schoen a Phoenix resident who is best known for his work with the non-profit Class 6 Theatre In this side-splitting sonnet-fracturing parody three actors use comedy and improvisation to perform shortened forms of several of Shakespearersquos plays

The cast features three seasoned actors Ari DeVriend as Adam Bradley Beamon as Daniel and Ryan Wentzel as Jess But while it may seem easy to produce a show with just three actors many factors create challenges according to Schoen whose hope is to produce a show with lots of lively audience interaction

ldquoContrary to what people may think this show comes with lots of challenges including a dense

Starlight Community Theater to present Bugsy Malone JR

PHOENIX ndash Enjoy some comedic fun at Starlight Community Theater at the production of Bugsy Malone JR directed by Susan Gibson Tickets are now available online for this pint-sized pin-striped classic a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s

Two gangs comprised completely of children square off in a 1920s rivalry of Capone-ian standards Dandy Danrsquos gang has gotten the upper hand since obtaining the ldquosplurgerdquo Now Fat Sam and his bumbling buffoons are in real trouble Bugsy Malone a one-time boxer is thrust not-so-willingly into the gangster limelight when he becomes the last chance Fat Samrsquos gang has of surviving All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love Blousey but that just isnrsquot in the cards for our hero

Bugsy Malone JR is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre

International The showrsquos music and lyrics are by Paul Williams and the book is by Alan Parker

Bugsy Malone JR performances will be held on Friday Sept 11 7 pm Saturday Sept 12 2 and 7 pm Friday Sept 18 7 pm Saturday Sept 19 2 and 7 pm Friday Sept 25 7 pm and Saturday Sept 26 2 and 7 pm
