SYDNEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION I PREVIEW

F I R S T G R A D E After having the "wood" on the Balmain Tigers all season, the Manly "Wolves" found themselves on

the end of a sound lesson from the reigning Premiers.

With the chance to steal victory in the final term with the breeze, the Wolves fell short of the mark and now take on the Bankstown Bombers in the cut-throat Preliminary Final.

Bankstown rose to this opportunity for Grand Final glory by way of a decisive victory over Sutherland in the 1st Semi Final, and after an up and down year are building up at the right time of the season.

The two sides have met only once this season way back on July 22, resulting in a 66 point victory to the Wolves.

Tipsters would have to lean towards Manly at this stage, but how well the Wolves come up after last Saturday's encounter might just tip the scale. Whatever, it should be a great contest.

R E S E R V E G R A D E The Wolves compete in the cut-throat final at this level, again courtesy of the Balmain Tigers. Although

it was not t ipped that the Wolves "twos' would overthrow top of the table Balmain, Manly were more than keen to go straight into the big one and will be desperate in their revenge today.

The Wollongong Lions would not be a bad bet if the odds were right as they neatly disposed of Bankstown two weeks ago, and greedily eye off a spot in the big one.

The Lions must surely be confident after a successful debut season in Sydney Football, and have a good chance to proceed further today.

Manly are a very good side and will take a tower of beating, and Mick Sherwood is sure to have the boys revved up for today's clash.

It will be a mighty encounter.

U N D E R 20'S The Sutherland boys felt the power of the Liverpool Eagles last week and returned to the Preliminary

Final with a thud. Disappointed to lose in the tricky windswept conditions, Terry Cummins and his boys will be keen to atone today.

Danny Free and his Bombers have been down the Finals path before and having tasted Premiership honours in '88 will be leaving no stone unturned in today's clash for a Grand Final berth,

Sutho will start favourites and will take some stopping but its finals time and anything can happen.

A R O U N D T H E T R A P S HISTORY

History was made last Sunday at the Second Semi final when the delightful Betty Bell Western Suburbs timekeeper officiated In the Under 19 match.

It was the first time that the finals timekeepers had been graced by a lady -and they loved it!

Betty, a long time Western Suburbs lady has been a timekeeper for over 10 years. Her two sons, the product of Croydon Park Juniors, now play for Western Suburbs Under 19's to Bettys great joy.

MILESTONES Last Sunday Campbelltown's Steve Noack played his 100th game for the Blues.

Well done Steve who with brother Geoff have been ornaments to the game.

Other milestones that day were Peter Can (North Shore) 100 First Grade Games - also David (Buster) Fitzgerald from North Shore played his 175th club game for the Black and Reds.

N E X T Y E A R The League are currently in the process of interviewing a number of clubs in relation to their sitaution next year. Some of these particular clubs have had a good year whitt others not so good. I am led to believe there could be some changes in the compositions of the various divisions and only the next few months will tell.

A FAN

- SYDNEY & MIAMI Dennis Erickson, the Coach of the Miami University football team, said

•a fan is a guy who sits In the best place criticising the coach, the players, the umpires and has all the answers then he leaves the ground and can't find his car."

Yes Dennis, we have them in Sydney.

B E S T PLAYER No names to protect the innocent - but recently a club official when asked to nominate the best players • included in his picks was player "X" - because he had kept player T quiet.

Player "Y" at about that moment just klckeo his 10th goal.

And my wife says I see a different game from others.

VALE DAVID CARR Worth Shore players on, August 27, wore black armbands as a mark of respect to thi late David Can father of Shores bustling * wingman Peter Can.

David Can, softly spoken and with a keen analytic eye for football was a former committeeman of North Shore and a staunch fan, will be missed.

LJEVENS ON UMPIRING

The season has ended for many players. A number would have decided that their playing daysareoven That decision has been reached for a number of reasons, age, waningdesire to play, injuries or further risk of them, etc..

Players have acquired a lot of knowledge of the game during their careers and the game loses generally when players leave the football scene once they retire.

Their interests can be maintained in the game by pursuing a career UMPIRING.

The ranks of Sydney umpires includes many umpires who commenced their umpiring careers after long playing careers.

The ages of running umpires ie. field and boundary, rangefrom 18 to 45 and for goal umpires up to 50. Former players who wish to take on umpiring will find people with similar backgrounds and interests to their own.

Umpiringprovides an opportunity to keep fit - umpires train regularly as a group at Chatswood and Erskineville and for former players to give something back to the game that has probably provided them withyears of enjoyment as a player.

So why not find out more about becoming an official N.S. W. umpire?

Call David Levens, State Director of Umpiring, on023323791. We're always delighted to have new members and are commited to having a high standard of umpiring to support the game of Australian Football in N. S. W.

In 1948 two international cricketers who were selected in that famous touring side under (now Sir) Donald Bradman of England also played football in Sydney.

They were Sam Loxton who captained and coached East Sydney in 1945 and Keith Miller who played with Sydney (Naval) in 1947 and represented NSW in the carnival side of the same year. Another local foot-baiter who gave the game away to concentrate on cricket is the current outstanding Australian batsman, Mark Taylor who played junior and senior football in Sydney.

We really had to dig deep for the following information: The first match between Victoria and New South Wales was played on the Melbourne Cricket Ground on July 1,1880 with approximately 4,000 spectators in attendance. The return match was played in Sydney on August 6 of the same year. BoUi games were won by the Vies., who, in each game kicked 9 goals to 1; Behlnds although recorded, were not of scoring value in those far off days. Five thousand attended the match in Sydney which inaugurated many contests between the two colonies remembering of course that the VFA was then the principal state body in Victoria and federation was no inacted until1901. NSW had to wait until 1923 before they recorded their first win over the Mexicans, 15-11 to 11-10 in Sydney.

Some of the people in SFL Div II club, Wollondilly are making moves to erect a monument to the founder of the game, Mr H.C.A. Harrison who was born at Picton, NSW on the southern tablelands on October 16, 1836, a little known fact of someone who help create Australia's greatest game.

The Australian Football ground at Moore Park, Redern, corner of South Dowling and Cleveland

Streets has become synomomous with the game of Australian Football since the code was first played here In 1877. One thing we are not sure of however is whether the current ground Is the one which was used over 100 years ago. Maybe someone can tell us.

A few weeks ago we wrote about Campbell-town Committeeman, Ellis Noack and his involvement in the game in Sydney. Since another name has popped up and its East Sydney's Ralph Waldock. A Western Australian, he has been consistently involved with the Bulldogs since 1945, playing well over 100 first and reserve grade games following his discharge from the army in Sydney. He has held numerous positions with the club since he stopped playing: selector, secretary, committeeman etc. For years Ralph was one of East Sydney's outstanding trainers, tending the players in the club and state teams. This year is the manager of the first eighteen. His wife too has played a major role in club activities in the canteen, raffles and as jumper washer. Naturally enough Ralph is a life member at Easts and hes been there long enough almost to be regarded as part of the furniture...

Our umpires are a much maligned lot so I thought I would present you today with this piece written by an umpire which may make us feel a little more for our men in whitell

Ode to an Umpire - Am I getting too old for this?

• Come home from work Friday evening after a stressful week and check to make sure your gear is ready for Saturday. • Sat AM - read rule book, pack bag, eat specified meal. • drive to other side of city thru Saturday shopping traffic using UBD references. • pass several umpiring mates who live on opposite side of city and are umpiring near where you live. • arrive at ground where nobody knows you (or doesn't want to know you) •change in a storeroom which has lime or phosphate bags overflowing in the corner. • chase clubs for suitable footballs, goal and boundary umpires, timekeepers and Interchange stewards. • walk onto ground in pure white clothes and boots knowing you will be splattered with black mud in the first 30 seconds. • spend about 2 hours running 12km and are ridiculed for almost every decision. • come off the ground exhausted and have to walk with a towel around you and shower with the home club who you hope won, otherwise there's no chance of borrowing soap. • the showers are either cold or have water coming out one drip at a time. • spend 15 minutes making sure scorecards and timecards are correct! • You've reported a player for abusing you with foul language. The club official comes in and tell you to forget the report because the guy didn't mean It and anyway can't make the tribunal hearing because he has night c lasses in Wollongong on Wednesdays. • you go into the club rooms to have a drink with players and officials but find they are ail in huddles and don't want to know you. • you stand in the centre of the room reading the football record hoping someone will approach you - they don't. Players want to argue rules on the ground but never discuss them after the game. • At last you arrive home and unpack wet filthy smelling clothes, socks and boots. • you srt down in front of the tele to relax and criticize the VFL umpires and the kids want to wrestle. ( • you finally crawl into bed hoping for a good nights sleep. • the wife wants to tell you all the things the kids have done wrong during the daywhile you've been out enjoying yourself.
