John Stiegelmeier has built the South Dakota State University footballteam into a consistent winner in the ranks of the Division I Football

Championship Subdivision and is poised to become the Jackrabbits’ all-time winningest coach during the 2014season.

Overall, Coach Stig has led theJackrabbits to a 111-81 record (.578 win-ning percentage) in 17 seasons. He standsthree wins away from passing Ralph Ginn(113-89-9 in 22 seasons from 1947-68)atop the SDSU career wins list.

Under Stiegelmeier’s leadership, SDSUhas posted eight winning seasons in theschool’s 10 campaigns at the FCS (for-merly Division I-AA) level, compiling a 69-48 record since moving to the FCSranks in 2004. Overall, the Jackrabbitshave had a winning record in 13 of Stiegelmeier's 17 years as head coach, and have a 32-16 record in Missouri Valley Football Conference games.SDSU has reached the FCS playoffs three (2009, 2012, 2013), and wonfirst-round contests in both 2012 and 2013.

After consecutive 5-6 seasons in 2010 and 2011, the Jackrabbits rebounded in 2012 with their second postseason appearance in four years.SDSU finished the 2012 campaign with a 9-4 overall record, tying the single-season school record for wins. The Jackrabbits also hosted — andwon — their first-ever playoff game, defeating Eastern Illinois, 58-10, atCoughlin-Alumni Stadium. SDSU was later eliminated by eventual national champion North Dakota State. In 2012, the Jackrabbits wereranked seven of the final eight weeks of the season and ended the campaign ranked 14th in the Sports Network media poll.

The Jackrabbits repeated much of the same success during the 2013 season, reaching the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first timein program history. Despite being ranked in the preseason top 10, theJackrabbits found themselves with a 4-4 record entering the final month ofthe season. SDSU responded, however, reeling off four consecutive wins inMVFC play to again earn an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs.

SDSU opened the 2013 playoffs with a dominant defensive performance, posting a 26-7 road win at No. 8 Northern Arizona, before falling 41-17 atthird-ranked Eastern Washington a week later. The Jackrabbits again tiedthe school record for wins, finishing with a 9-5 overall mark, and ended up13th in the Sports Network media poll and 14th in the FCS Coaches Poll.

The Jackrabbits made their first FCS playoff appearance and the pro-gram's first postseason appearance in 30 years during the 2009 season. TheJackrabbits finished as runner-up in the Missouri Valley Football Confer-ence with a 7-1 record and finished the season 8-4 overall. SDSU led formuch of its playoff game at top-seeded Montana, before falling 61-48 tothe eventual national runner-up Grizzlies. Ranked for the entire season, in-cluding appearing in the top 10 for two weeks, the Jackrabbits finished the2009 campaign with an 11th-place showing in both the FCS Coaches’ andSports Network media polls.

In 2008, the Jackrabbits entered another new era in their Division I pur-suits as they joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference. With the tran-sition from Division II completed, SDSU fell just short of a playoff berthin its first season of eligibility, ending the year with a 7-5 overall recordand 6-2 mark in the MVFC. Of SDSU's five losses, four came againstranked FCS opponents, including conference co-champions Northern Iowaand Southern Illinois. The team's other loss was at the hands of FootballBowl Subdivision opponent Iowa State in the season opener. That gamemarked the first time the Jackrabbits had played an FBS opponent sincemoving to Division I at the start of the 2004 season.

Under Stiegelmeier's guidance, SDSU has appeared in the FCS rankingsseven of the last eight seasons. The Jacks cracked the national poll for the

first time in late October 2006, after posting back-to-back come-from-behind victories over Cal Poly and UC Davis. The Jackrabbits finished the2006 season ranked 22nd by the Sports Network.

During the 2007 season, SDSU claimed its first conference title since1963 by winning the Great West Football Conference championship. Afterstarting 0-3 for the second consecutive season, SDSU reeled off sevenwins in its final eight games, including a 29-24 victory over previously undefeated North Dakota State the final week of the season, to claim theGWFC title with a 7-4 overall record and 4-0 mark in league play.

In leading SDSU to the GWFC title, Stiegelmeier was named confer-ence coach of the year and was honored by the American Football CoachesAssociation as the Division I Football Championship Subdivision Region 5Coach of the Year. In addition, he was named as one of five finalists in theFCS for the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.

The Jackrabbits continued to move up the rankings at the FCS level during the 2008 season, reaching the 12th spot in the Sports Network pollafter opening league play with home victories over No. 14 YoungstownState and No. 15 Western Illinois in back-to-back weeks. In all, SDSU wasranked seven weeks that season.

After posting back-to-back 6-5 seasons in 2004 and 2005 to begin theirDivision I pursuits, the Jackrabbits rose another notch in 2006 as theycompiled a 7-4 overall record, finishing the season ranked 21st in the finalFCS poll conducted by The Sports Network. Following an 0-3 start, theJacks rebounded by winning seven consecutive games for the first timesince 1963. Three of the victories came in the closing minutes against nationally ranked teams.

Stiegelmeier, 57, is the 20th head coach for the Jackrabbits. His tenureof 17 years as head coach is the second-longest head coaching stint inschool history.

The Selby, S.D., native first became acquainted with the Jackrabbit foot-ball program as a student assistant under John Gregory during SDSU'sonly other NCAA playoff season in 1979. After graduating from SDSUwith degrees in mathematics and physical education, Stiegelmeier enrolledin graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa, where he served onthe coaching staff of a Panther squad which posted a 7-4 mark in 1981.

Stiegelmeier coached at Eau Claire (Wis.) North High School from1981-84, then returned to his home state as defensive coordinator, second-ary coach and recruiting coordinator at Northern State from 1984-87.

Stiegelmeier returned to his alma mater in July 1988, joining WayneHaensel’s Jackrabbit coaching staff as secondary coach and recruiting co-ordinator. After Haensel stepped down following the 1990 season,Stiegelmeier was elevated to defensive coordinator by new head coachMike Daly.

In six seasons as defensive coordinator, Stiegelmeier helped guide theJackrabbits to a 41-23 record. SDSU turned in a winning record in all sixseasons, including five seven-win seasons. That track record of successhelped Stiegelmeier secure his first collegiate head coaching position inDecember 1996, when he was named Daly's successor.

2014 JACKRABBIT FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS 3

Page 6: Football prospectus 2014

As the South Dakota State University footballteam gears up for another potential playoff run,the Jackrabbits will use the spring to get healthy, develop depth in some key areas and fine-tuneinstead of overhauling schemes on both sides ofthe ball.

“This spring is about mastery rather than installation,” said head coach John Stiegelmeier, who enters his 18th season poised to set theSDSU record for football coaching victories.Coach Stig has compiled a 111-81 overall recordand enters the 2014 season three wins away frompassing Ralph Ginn (113-89-9 record from1947-68) atop the all-time wins chart.

Stiegelmeier estimates the Jackrabbits willimplement only half to five-eighths of their totalscheme during the 15 allotted practices thatmake up spring ball.

“We’ll probably have more of a teachingspring than we’ve had in a long time and less ofplaying the game,” Stiegelmeier said. “We willreally focus on making the play — teach it,grade it and depth chart by it.”

However, a number of standout returningplayers, including senior quarterback AustinSumner, senior running back Zach Zenner andjunior tight end Cam Jones, will be held out ofmost spring drills while recovering from injuriessustained during the grind of a 14-game seasonin 2013. All are expected to be back to fullstrength when fall camp opens in August.

“I would say the last two years and in the sixsince we’ve gone through the reclassificationthat there’s been a solidifying of a foundationthat we’re going to compete for a conferencechampionship and the expectation is to be in theplayoffs,” Stiegelmeier said. “The realistic goalnow is compete for a national championship.

The program has matured both in its accomplish-ments and its expectations.”

OFFENSEZenner returns to lead a balanced offensive

unit that averaged 28.9 points and 384.6 yards oftotal offense per game.

A native of Eagan, Minn., Zenner becameonly the second player in the 30-plus-year history of the Football Championship Subdivi-sion to rush for 2,000 yards in two separate seasons. Zenner gained an FCS-best 2,044 yardsin 2012, followed by 2,015 yards last season ona school-record 351 carries. He scored 25 totaltouchdowns — 23 on the ground and twothrough the the air as he added 21 receptions for251 yards.

Stiegelmeier said one of his goals for springball is to identify and develop a reliable backuprunning back. Junior Reggie Gandy, who gained297 yards and scored two touchdowns last sea-son, is a leading candidate, but will be pushedby a competitive group that includes sopho-mores Isaac Rodriguez and Kyle Paris, alongwith redshirt freshmen Bridgeport Tusler andBrady Mengarelli, the latter of whom wasnamed the team’s Scout Offense Player of theYear in 2013.

Two other record-setters return to help leadthe Jackrabbit offense in Sumner and wide receiver Jason Schneider.

Sumner already holds Jackrabbit careerrecords for completions (631), attempts (1,085)and yards (7,824), and stands seven touchdownpasses from surpassing Ryan Berry’s careerrecord of 56 touchdown passes from 2005-08. In2013, Sumner completed 58.8 percent (240-of-408) of his passes for 2,999 yards and 19 touch-downs against only eight interceptions.

The backup situation at quarterback also isunsettled as the only other signal-caller to attempt a pass last season, Nate Meyer, decidedto transfer after his redshirt freshman campaign.Junior Tyler Finnes and redshirt freshman Dalton Douglas will receive the bulk of repsduring spring ball.

Schneider became the first Jackrabbit receiverto record a 1,000-yard season in the Division Iera in 2013, hauling in a school-record 78catches for 1,088 yards and 10 touchdowns. Histotals also ranked among the Missouri ValleyFootball Conference leaders as he earned first-team all-MVFC honors.

The Jackrabbits will be faced with replacingtwo of their other top three receivers from a yearago after the graduations of Trevor Tiefenthaler(45 catches, 547 yards) and Brandon Hubert (36catches, 423 yards, 4 TD). A host of other widereceivers return, including juniors Trevor Wesley(15-176), Brandon Andrews (4-35), LarvesJones (2-12) and Matt Raymond (1-16), alongwith senior Dom Wright (1-17) and sophomoreConnor Landberg (1-16).

Newcomers Jake Wieneke and Connor Orgillalso will vie to work their way up the depthchart.

At tight end, the Jackrabbit passing game willreceive a further boost with the return of CamJones, who caught 18 passes for 315 yards and atouchdown before missing the second half of theseason due to injury. Mitch Vejvoda (2-18) alsoreturns.

One schematic change the Jackrabbits are implementing in spring ball is the use of a truefullback. In previous years, SDSU has often utilized a tight end as a blocking back, but willuse the traditional fullback in 2014.

Tied at 7-all at halftime, the Jackrabbits took the lead midway throughthe third quarter on a safety. Jackrabbit punter Ethan Sawyer pinned NAUat the 2-yard line, and after a false start penalty moved the ball back to the1, T.J. Lally drove running back Zach Bauman out of the end zone for a 9-7SDSU lead.

On the free kick following the safety, Je Ryan Butler broke off a 38-yardreturn to the NAU 39. Two plays later, Zach Zenner broke around the rightend for a 34-yard touchdown run.

Meanwhile, the Jackrabbit defense took control, holding NAU to sevennet yards of total offense in the third quarter.

The scoring drive covered 66 yards on 15 plays and took more thanseven minutes off the clock.

SDSU appeared on the verge of tying the game on the ensuing posses-sion, but Zenner was stripped of the football at the NAU 1 and the Lum-berjacks fell on the loose football in the end zone for a touchback.

The Lumberjacks then drove deep into SDSU territory, but Kyren Poe’spass attempt was batted into the air and was intercepted by defensive endJack Sherlock. One play later, Zenner atoned for his earlier miscue by out-running the Lumberjack defense for an 87-yard touchdown with 3:14 to

play in the half.Zenner finished the game with 249 yards on 30 carries as he crossed the

100-yard mark for the 12th time this season and went over the 200-yardmark for the second time in three career playoff games.

The South Dakota State University footballprogram will benefit from the addition of twonew facilities in the near future.

Currently under construction, the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex will serve as the indoor practice facility for the Jackrabbit football team.

The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex, which is connected to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center directly north of Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, is scheduled to be completedin the fall of 2014. The facility will be comprisedof two distinct floor areas covering more than164,000 square feet — an indoor practice andcompetition space of more than 149,000 squarefeet and a human performance space of nearly15,000 square feet.

One of the only eight-lane, 300-meter tracksin the region will be housed in the facility, alongwith 100 yards of synthetic turf. Additionalspace is dedicated for sports medicine, athletictraining, strength and conditioning, physicaltherapy, hydrotherapy, observation rooms and office facilities. Seating will accommodateabout 1,000 spectators.

The project’s Preliminary Facility Statementwas approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents in June 2011, with the Facility ProgramPlan approved in October 2012. The project, whis is part of South Dakota State University’s2025 Master Plan for Athletic Facilities, waslater approved by the South Dakota Legislaturethrough SB 11 in early 2013.

Fund-raising efforts kicked off in the summerof 2012. Leadership gifts from the Dale and PatLarson family, First Bank & Trust, SanfordHealth, Larson Manufacturing and other anony-mous donors have made this transformationalfacility a reality. The project was part of SDSU’s“It Starts With STATE”: A campaign for SouthDakota State University. The six-year campaignraised more than $255 million for students, faculty, facilities, athletics and other universityprograms.

Groundbreaking for the project was held inlate August 2013.

The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex wasdesigned by Kansas City-based Crawford Architects, LLC, and Architecture Incorporatedof Sioux Falls. Henry Carlson Company ofSioux Falls has been awarded the bid to serve asgeneral contractor for the project.

Also on the horizon is the construction of anew football stadium to replace Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, which has served as the homefield for Jackrabbit football since 1962.

The proposed Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which would be built on the existing Coughlin-Alumni Stadium site, would seat between18,500 and 20,000 spectators, with nearly 2,000seats designated as premium club seats or within

suites. Total cost of the project, which would bedone in phases and completed prior to the 2016season, is estimated between $60 and $65 million. The new stadium is being designed toprovide a memorable game-day experience forstudent-athletes and fans, all within available resources.

Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million were received in October 2013 from Sioux Fallsbanker Dana Dykhouse and philanthropist T.Denny Sanford. Subsequent financial commit-ments have brought the total raised for the project to nearly $20 million. The remainingamount — up to $38 million — would be

financed through the issuance of revenue bondsby the South Dakota Building Authority. Bondswould be paid back through ticket sales, suiteagreements, advertising, sponsorships and otherrevenue streams.

In addition, the stadium will serve as the newlocation for the University Police Department.

In December 2013, the South Dakota Boardof Regents approved the facility plan and advanced the project to the South Dakota Legislature for final approval. Senate Bill 15was signed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard in lateMarch.

Construction on the new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium is scheduled to begin following the 2014season and be completed prior to the start of the 2016 campaign. The new stadium, which willcost up to $65 million, will be built in phases on the existing Coughlin-Alumni Stadium site andwill feature a number of amenities, including premium club seating and suites.
