A ConferenceTopic for All

Medical StaffDoctors and physiotherapists at sports teams treatnumerous muscular injuries per year and face constantpressures when diagnosing, estimating recovery time andmitigating against the risk of re-injury. Constant learningin this field is essential to improve the level of advice givento coaching staff.

Orthopaedic SurgeonsOrthopaedic surgeons are presented with a wide rangeof conditions, ranging from relatively simple cases to themost complex and debated issues in Sports Medicine.Key topics covered in this conference will thereforeinclude chronic tendinopathies, ruptured tendons andmuscle lesions.

Rehabilitation SpecialistsStrength & Conditioning coaches, athletics trainers and otherrehabilitation practitioners are responsible for guiding theathlete towards optimal performance via gradual and completefunctional recovery programmes. Despite this period beingone of the latter stages of the injury continuum, it is oftensusceptible to failure and should therefore be consideredappropriately in order to minimise the risk of further injury.

Technical & Coaching StaffCoaching and technical staff have the responsibility ofmanaging athletes who compete in up to 70 matches andover 200 training sessions per year. With such a high riskof overload injuries, it is important that they are educatedon the intricacies of these injuries including their preventionand proper rehabilitation.

The ‘Football Medicine Community’ is regularly confronted by muscleand tendon injuries to football players. In dealing with these injuries itis essential that all stakeholders are involved in the dialogue; includingdiscussions over their prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

This conference programme has been designed to promote amultidisciplinary approach where the audience can understand eachtopic from a number of perspectives. Muscle and tendon injuries areoften managed in isolation by individual specialists, resulting in insufficientcommunication between all those involved in the recovery process. Manywill agree that best results are achieved when a team collaborates fullyintegrating the collective areas of expertise.

London, a Crossroad of CulturesThe recent 2012 Olympics confirmed to all that Londonis a truly global city, not only for Sport and SportsMedicine. Whilst this has become a reality during thecourse of the last century, recent events have illustratedthe continued internationalisation of London and thenumbers speak for themselves: over 213 differentnationalities coexist in London with reciprocal respectand freedom. Once again, we will welcome delegatesfrom all corners of the world.

FIFA’s VisionF-MARC, FIFA’s Medical Assessment and Research Centrehas “over three hundred million football players to takecare of”. FOOTBALL MEDICINE STRATEGIESFOR MUSCLE & TENDON INJURIESThe Queen Elizabeth II Conference CentreIn the very heart of London and Westminster, The QEIIConference Centre is ideally located to take advantage ofeverything London has to offer. Uniquely situated in the shadowof Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye, this award-winning, purpose-built venue was also the base of Casa Italia(home of the Italian Olympic Committee) during the LondonOlympics. The conference will benefit from parallel sessions, withcapacities of 780 in the ‘Fleming Room’ and 450 in the‘Churchill Auditorium’, which has even hosted the likes ofNelson Mandela.Furthermore a communal networking area (a British Agorà)will assist in providing scientific updates to an internationalcommunity. The exhibition area, situated on the third floor, will host working lunches and coffee breaks for both delegatesand speakers.

THE SCIENCE OF FOOTBALL SUMMITWembley StadiumOn Monday 22nd April the Conference moves to the home ofEnglish football, Wembley Stadium, for the Science of FootballSummit. Isokinetic’s Education & Research DepartmentThe Education & Research Department, the body in charge of organising this event, represents the cultural heart of the Isokinetic Medical Group, continually updatingmedical practices. As a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, we have a common aimto promote research and scientific sharing throughout the Football MedicineCommunity. Isokinetic Medical Group’s research findings are actively shared with theglobal Sports Medicine Community, with the hope to improve athlete and patient carearound the world.

The First ConferenceThe first edition of the International Conference on Sports Rehabilitation and Traumatologywas organised along the shores of Lake Garda, Northern Italy, in 1992. Its goal was tobring together Sports Medicine professionals to discuss the most important and relevanttopics related to athletes’ health. We have worked hard to ensure that the core values, team ethic, friendship, hospitality and open networking which was symbolic of the firstconference has remained in all subsequent editions.

Embracing New TrendsIn 2012, the Football Medicine Strategies conference broke down barriers to participationby offering a Live Online Streaming service, with delegates able to watch the event livefrom offices, clinics and universities around the world. This would be the first time thata Football Medicine conference was streamed online and would set the trend for futureevents.

The 2013 EventIn 2013 we will celebrate the 22nd edition of the conference and the second consecutivetime it has been organised in London, with support from both The FA and F-MARC.Following the recent opening of the Isokinetic Medical Group’s first clinic outside ofItaly, in the heart of London, we welcome friends and colleagues to join us for thisspecial occasion.
