QuarterbacksSenior Ben McKinney received plenty of experience at quarterback last season. McKinney will take charge of a running-oriented offensive attack for the Yellow Jackets. The backup quarterback position will be settled in fall practice.

Running BacksMcKinney and junior Shacorry Lilly will each see plenty of time at running back as well. Both will be workhorses for the Yellow Jackets. Junior Chris Brown, sophomore Demonte Johnson and freshman Rodney Groce will also see plenty of carries.

Wide ReceiversThe Yellow Jackets will be breaking in a new group of receivers, with senior Judd Moore as the only returning player with varsity experience. Junior Tyler Roper, sophomore Jamichael Chapman and a host of freshmen will round out the group.

Offensive LineJuniors Chris Brown, Ryan Brasher and Kyle Wells will each play a key role up front. Sophomores Brandon Knox, Elex Harris and Chase Howard will also need to step up on the offensive line. FreshmanBryce O’Steen will also be in the mix.

Defensive LineJuniors Chris Brown and Ryan Brasher, along with sophomores Brandon Knox, Elex Harris and Chase Howard, will be needed as two-way players capable of playing on both sides of the ball for the Yellow Jackets.

LinebackersSenior Ben McKinney will spearhead the defensive unit from his middle linebacker position. Junior Shacorry Lilly and sophomore Jamichael Chapman will see time at linebacker.

SecondarySenior Judd Moore is the only returning player in the secondary with previous varsity experience. Junior Tyler Roper, and freshmen Austin Young, Demetrius Lilly and Rodney Groce will be in the mix for playing time.

Special TeamsKicking and punting aren’t top options at Vincent. Expect the Yellow Jackets to be willing to take chances on fourth downs and two-point conversions.

The Yellow Jackets made it to the playoffs despite being plagued by the injury bug last season. Vincent must replace a few starters, but an easier region slate should pave the way for another playoff appearance. Shacorry Lilly

QuarterbacksTaylor Burr, a 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior, will line up behind center for the Bulldogs. Burr, who will be asked to lead a run-first, pass-second attack, has a pretty accurate arm. Junior Justin Devould will serve as Burr’s back up.

Running BacksJunior Garrius Chappell, a 6-1, 195-pound back, is a returning starter at running back. Chappell is likely to be the focus of the offense as newcomers get their feet wet at key positions. Chappell is a threat to break away for a long run any time he touches the ball. Devould, junior Eric Smith and sophomore Ronezz Stevens will provide depth in the backfield.

Wide ReceiversR.J. Scaife, a 5-8, 150-pound junior, is a returning starter and the leading receiver for the Bulldogs. Scaife will be needed in short yardage situations and on third-and-long. Stevens and senior Stone Pritchett will be capable targets for Burr. Senior tight end Lionel Watkins can cause trouble for an opposing defense with his size.

Offensive LineThree positions on the offensive line are set with senior guard Jesse Lee, junior tackle Trey Colley and junior center Zach Smith. Seniors Austin Nicholas, Derek Freeman, Aaron Buff, Josh Hughes and Carlos

Sumerlin, along with sophomores Korey Cunningham and Demetrouse Conwell, will battle for the remaining spots.

Defensive LineSenior Jesse Lee and junior Trey Colley are returning veterans up front. Seniors Josh Hughes and Carlos Sumerlin will play key roles with sophomores Korey Cunningham and Demetrouse Conwell providing depth.

LinebackersThe linebacking unit is in good hands with senior Lincoln Crider and juniors Zach Smith and David Shirah. The group received plenty of playing time as back-ups last season.

SecondaryJunior R.J. Scaife is a returning starter at cornerback, but the rest of the secondary will be young. Junior Garrius Chappell has experience in the defensive backfield. Seniors Stone Pritchett and Lionel Watkins, along with sophomore Ronezz Stevens, may see playing time in the secondary.

Special TeamsThe Bulldogs are set with junior placekicker Brett Grey. Punting duties are still up for grabs.

The Bulldogs begin the season under their third coach in three years. The excitement level is high under first-year coach Jamie Williams. Montevallo hopes to make it back to the playoffs in Williams’ first season at the helm. Garrius Chappell

Page 13: Football Magazine

QuarterbacksSenior Brandon Wells is entering his third season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. At 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, Wells is a tough player to defend with his ability to get outside of the pocket and make a deep throw on the run.

Running BacksJunior Eugene Rodgers has a tendency to be overshadowed by Wells in the backfield, but he’s an incredible athlete in his own right. Rodgers keeps opposing defenses honest with his speed and power. Senior A.J. Nixon and junior Tony Elkins will also see plenty of touches this season.

Wide ReceiversJunior Jeremy Hyde is the third piece of the Eagles’ three-headed-monster attack on offense. The Eagles have plenty of depth in this group with seniors Travis Green, Channing Mitchell, Cikia Shanks and Channen Fletcher, along with junior Nick Pennington. Freshman Ronnie Clark is also a capable target for Wells.

Offensive LineCalera is in pretty good shape up front with the return of senior tackle Skylar Wachs, senior guard Terry Howell, junior guard Jerry Smith and junior center T.J. Killingsworth. Seniors Kenny Frederick and Logan McNamee, along with juniors Augie Mustoe and Kyle Brasher, will battle for playing time.

Defensive LineThe defensive front is in fine condition with the return of seniors Kevin Johnson and Chris Martin. Senior Jerry Smith, junior Augie Mustoe and freshman Titus Adams will also battle for playing time. Seniors Jeremy Lacey and Erik Tinajero will provide depth.

LinebackersSenior Skylar Wachs takes over as the middle linebacker after playing on the defensive line last season. Seniors A.J. Nixon and Terry Howell return with plenty of varsity experience under their belts. Seniors Henoko Lubala, Arnulfo Leyva and Michael Crosby could also work their way into the mix.

SecondaryThe secondary is stacked with returning veterans in seniors Travis Green, Channing Mitchell and Alek Kauffman, juniors Eugene Rodgers and Jeremy Hyde and freshman Ronnie Clark. Seniors Channen Fletcher and Money Lyles and junior JustinBrickler will also fight for playing time.

Special TeamsBoth placekicking and punting duties remain question marks entering fall practice after the unit was decimated by graduation.

Calera should be one of the most dangerous teams in its class this season under coach Scott Martin. The Eagles have plenty of experienced veterans back. A record-breaking season could be ahead for the Eagles. Eugene Rodgers

Matthew FurutoRB

Page 17: Football Magazine

QuarterbacksPaul Barber has graduated, leaving the door wide open for three competitors. Ben Craft, Tanner Cunningham and John Stapleton, who came to Briarwood from Arizona during the offseason, will battle to replace Barber as the starting quarterback.

Running BacksSam Whitaker will open the new campaign as the starting running back, but Taylor Cole could put pressure on Whitaker and push for the job. Both will see playing time. Matt Furuto will serve as the H-back, a position that will be utilized a lot in offensive coordinator Joe Craddock’s spread attack.

Wide ReceiversNothing has been set in stone when it comes to the receiving unit, according to head coach Fred Yancey. Cole Pearson, Devin Bowman, Wilson Whorton, Kevin McKelvey and Turner Herron are vying for starting spots at the receiver positions. Michael Latham and Canon Smith will compete to be the starting tight end.

Offensive LineThe Lions do have some experience coming back to the offensive line. Returning starter Tim Crenshaw will hold down one tackle spot, and Nick Maxey will return and play center after making the move from guard. Alex Cain and Patrick Morton will move in at the guard positions, and Preston Pittman will be the new starter opposite Crenshaw at the other tackle spot. Wesley Jones will be a versatile backup and provide depth.

Defensive LineThe defensive coaches couldn’t ask for more than a three-year starter returning, and that’s exactly what they’re getting in defensive end Caleb Ward. Ward will be joined by Jake Whaley at the other end spot. Tyler Whitworth, who makes the move over from the offensive line, and Jackson Thomas will start on the interior at defensive tackle. Thomas Hess and Bradley Byers will play each spot on the line.

LinebackersThe Lions are counting on three players to lead the linebacker corps in 2010. Roy Gilbert will start at middle linebacker. Gilbert will be flanked by Tom Muir-Taylor at strong side outside linebacker and Brooks Willoughby at the weak side linebacker spot.

SecondaryThe secondary may be the deepest and most experienced group for Yancey’s squad this season. Kalan Reed returns to start at one cornerback spot while Tyler Nix will try his hand as a first-year starter at the other cornerback position. Cooper Harrington and Chad Davis return to anchor the secondary at the safety positions. Forest Roberson will back up Harrington and Davis while Wynne Morris will provide depth at cornerback.

Special TeamsHarrington will double up as the kick returner and punt returner. Whorton will handle the punting duties and could be the team’s placekicker as well.

After being ousted in the third round of the playoffs last season, Briarwood will be looking to go further in 2010. The Lions will be tested by a daunting schedule, but will be well prepared for it with coach Fred Yancey in charge. Sam Whitaker

QuarterbacksJunior Jake Ganus returns to lead the Hornet offense and will look to pick up where he left off last year after starting the last two games and leading the team in rushing. Sophomore Jake Adams will fill the back-up role.

Running BacksSophomore Julius McCall will step in as the primary running back. As a do-it-all athlete, the Hornets will look for multiple ways to get the ball in McCall’s hands. Sophomore Antwon Williams will get some carries. Senior Blake McLaughlin, junior Russ Birdsong and senior D.J. Washington, a converted tailback, will compete for the starting fullback job.

Wide ReceiversSeniors Jake Campbell and Hunter Picklesimer, both returning starters, will be Ganus’ primary targets this fall. Juniors Matthew Graben and George Hutchins will serve as backups. Junior Joey Mock will start at tight end while also seeing time on defense.

Offensive LineThe Hornets, who are replacing all five starters from last year, will look for senior Woody Searcey to start at center. Sophomore Darian Golden could see some time at the position. Battling for the two guard positions are Golden, junior Neal Gray and senior Michael DePaolantonio. Senior Nathan Ray will get the starting nod at one tackle spot while juniors Jay Chisolm and Aaron Paramore will compete for the other position.

Defensive LineThe Hornets’ defensive front could be the team’s strength with all four starters returning, including juniors Joey Mock and Neal Gray to anchor the line at defensive end. Junior Jay Chisolm and senior A.J. Kohler return at defensive tackle. Sophomores Chase Parker and Shane Paramore, along with senior John Michael Lawley, will provide depth.

LinebackersThe Hornets return two starting linebackers in senior outside linebacker Michael Guo and senior Blake McLaughin. Senior John Michael Lawley, junior Russ Birdsong and junior linebacker Preston Sorrell will compete for the other two spots. Sophomore Jake Adams, junior Jake Ganus and senior Josh Lott will add depth at the position.

SecondarySenior George Hutchins, a returning starter, and sophomore Julius McCall will hold down both cornerback spots. Senior Jake Campbell and junior Nathan Roddy, who started two games last season, will see time at safety. Senior Hunter Picklesimer, sophomore Antwon Williams, along with juniors Justin Pugh and Toney Hicks, will compete for snaps in the secondary.

Special TeamsAshley Page and Travis Mitchell will challenge each other for the placekicking duties. Page and Graben will compete at punter.

Chelsea enters 2010 looking to make an improvement after finishing near the bottom of the region the last two seasons. The Hornets, under the direction of coach Wade Waldrop, will be relying on some young talent this season. D.J. Washington

QuarterbacksJunior Evan McNeal will take over at quarterback after the graduation of Braten Dill. McNeal will also likely play at receiver this season. Freshman Ty Proctor will serve as McNeal’s back up.

Running BacksJunior Denzel Williams, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back, is one of only three players returning for the Wildcats who saw extensive playing time in 2009. Williams will be the focus on offense and is capable of handling a heavy workload. Expect to see junior fullback Brent Wooley providing help in short-yardage situations. Junior Rashad Bailey, sophomore Nathan Sawyer and freshman Austin Poe will also get a few carries.

Wide ReceiversJunior Evan McNeal and sophomore Jose Vazquez will likely be the top targets for the offense. The duo, which has varsity experience, will need to step up and provide leadership for an inexperienced offense. Sophomores Jacob Tidmore and Sanchez Cotton will also see playing time at receiver.

Offensive LineJunior Mike Pate is a returning starter at tackle. Seniors Jonathan Sickles, Matt Mitchell, Bo McKinney and Stephen Erhart, along with sophomores Jacob Oliver and Kyle Glover, should play key roles up front.

Defensive LineThe defensive line will be inexperienced, but has plenty of potential with senior tackle Darius Brown plugging the gaps on the interior. Seniors Matt Mitchell, Jonathan Sickles, Bo McKinney and Stephen Erhart and sophomore Donnie Brechin will also be in the mix for playing time.

LinebackersSophomore Jordan Tucker was a member of the varsity team last season. Junior Tracy Oglesby will see time at linebacker. Freshmen James Rodgers, Marterius McGregor and Austin Poe are all new faces in the middle of the defense, but each will see plenty of snaps this season in a unit without a returning starter.

SecondaryJunior Evan McNeal and sophomore Sanchez Cotton will be heavily counted upon in the secondary. The two will likely be in charge of leadership duties on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomores Jose Vazquez and Jacob Tidmore will also play a key role in the defensive backfield.

Special TeamsThe Wildcats will feature new faces in the kicking game. Both kicking and punting duties have yet to be settled entering fall practice.

The Wildcats have enjoyed a two-year run that featured a 19-1 regular season record. After graduating one of the most successful classes in school history, coach Ryan Herring and the Wildcats will face a rebuilding project. Evan McNeal

QuarterbacksJunior Paul Angel, a returning starter, tore an ACL during baseball practice at the beginning of the summer. Junior Trey Page will make the move over from the secondary – and from receiver – to fill the void. Page brings the added dimension of a running threat when a play breaks down. Sophomores Heath Quinn and Zach Stephenson will serve as backups.

Running BacksIt’s a two-man race for the starting tailback between incumbent Bradley Bostick, a junior, and sophomore Michael Jointer. Bostick will most likely get the nod when the Eagles open the season, but fellow backfield mate Jointer could make a serious push for the job during fall camp.

Wide ReceiversA couple of players who could help replace the production of Stanford signee Davis Dudchock are returning senior starter Rico Dunn and junior Jakaryus Redwine. Seniors Grant Davis and Marquell Smith will provide depth. Junior Jordan Pierce and sophomore Scott Hester will compete to fill the vacancy left by Dudchock at tight end.

Offensive LineJunior Jacob Guillary will start at one tackle spot while Luke Wise and Hayden Reese will fight to win the job at the other tackle spot for the Eagles, who lost all five starters to

graduation. Sophomore Hunter Murray and junior Josh Self will open the season as the starting guards while Brady Faulkner, a senior, will anchor the line as the starting center. Junior William Schweer can provide depth.

Defensive LineSophomore Lloyd Time and senior Tony Fusco look to form a formidable pair of book ends. Sophomore Austin Moro will start at one defensive tackle position while senior Hayden Long and DeJuan Phillips will compete to be a starter alongside Moro in the trenches. Long and Phillips will provide depth.

LinebackersSenior Andy Whitcomb returns as the starter at middle linebacker. Whitcomb will be flanked by sophomore Barrett Gossett and junior Chris Jones. Al Davis, a senior, will serve as a backup while providing depth at all three linebacker spots.

SecondaryThe Eagles have a couple of two-way players starting at cornerback in senior Rico Dunn and junior Jakaryus Redwine, both of which will also line up at wide receiver. Junior Cameron Bice and senior Bryant Kelley will look to start at the safety positions.

Special TeamsPosition battles are going on at punter and kicker. One name to watch closely is sophomore kicker Michael Cole.

Oak Mountain has won just seven games over the last two seasons. After losing 19 starters to graduation, the Eagles will look for some young, but talented, players to step up in season number two under coach Jeff Harris. Bradley Bostick

QuarterbacksGray Cato, a 5-foot-9, 143-pound junior, will likely take over at quarterback. The Panthers will need Cato to provide leadership. Sophomores Tanner Adams and Eli Beall will battle for back-up quarterback duties.

Running BacksSenior Dominique Harris, a 6-0, 177-pound back, will be the benefactor of the change in offensive plans to favor the running game. Harris, who features both power and speed, can handle the increase in carries. Seniors Michael Ross and Victor Angel, along with juniors Daniel O’Hara and Trey Maynard, will provide depth. Senior Derek Slaughter, a defensive star, may line up at fullback on occasion.

Wide ReceiversSenior Reed Bright, a popular target last season, is the Panthers’ leading receiver. Junior Philip Dublin has previous varsity experience. Senior Adam Strong, junior Kenny Meadows and sophomore Justin Brooks will need to make the most of every receiving opportunity to stay on the field.

Offensive LineJunior Michael Herring will spearhead the group at center. Seniors Tyler Ray, Jordan Brooks, Damali McFarland and Marquis Franklin should play key roles. Junior

Justin Forehand will battle for playing time.

Defensive LineSenior Nick Terrell has plenty of potential at defensive end. Senior Halen Hall, along with juniors Trevin Green and Jordan Ward, will also be in the mix up front on an inexperienced defensive line. Slaughter can also play up front.

LinebackersSlaughter, a 5-11, 193-pound Division I prospect, will play at linebacker most of the time, but he can also play on the line and in the secondary. Senior Davis Faught will likely start at middle linebacker. Seniors J.B. Camel and Casey Clark will also battle for playing time, along with junior Trey Cranford.

SecondarySenior safety Tom Williams, another potential Division I player, will lead the secondary. Seniors Patrick Powell and Braxton Holley, juniors D.J. Johnson, Segio Smith and Tucker Thomas and sophomore Antonio London will likely fill the remaining holes at cornerback and safety.

Special TeamsReturning starter Cameron Haynes is set to handle placekicking duties. Senior Tanner McGinnis will kick and punt.

The Panthers sneaked into the playoffs following a disappointing season in 2009. The road doesn’t get much easier for Pelham with the loss of four Division I signees to graduation. Youthful players must step up for coach Brett Burnett if the Panthers hope to return to the playoffs.

QuarterbacksJunior Reid Reinagel, a junior who has yet to take a meaningful varsity snap, will be the starter. Reinagel is coming off shoulder surgery during the offseason. Sophomore Nick Mullens will serve as Reinagel’s backup.

Running BacksJunior running back Alex Roberson and senior fullback Steven Silvio will play key roles in the rushing attack. Roberson has good size and Silvio is one of the most experienced players remaining on offense. Juniors Jon Mwaituka, Ashton Daniel and Sean Mardis will back up the starters.

Wide ReceiversSenior Zak Michael is the most experienced receiver returning to a group that suffered heavy losses to graduation. Hunter Kahn and former quarterback Payton Gray, both juniors, will need to step up and replace some of the lost production. Junior Dustin Cowart and sophomore Brandon Bilek will compete to become the starting tight end.

Offensive LineSenior tackle Taylor Kelley will lead an offensive line with a couple of new starters. Junior guard Ben Tamburello is one of the top prospects in the state in his class. Seniors Ryan Fox and Lance Feagin have plenty of varsity experience. Seniors J.T. Haywood, Joseph Defalco, Austin Harris and Trevor Nelson will likely fill in the holes.

Defensive LineSenior Emmanuel Cooper is a Division I prospect and received plenty of playing time last season, which is a good thing for a group that was decimated by graduation. Seniors Alex Dickson and Chris Robinson will help out on the interior. Senior Ryan Akers and junior Kameron Ricks will help out at defensive end.

LinebackersSenior Alex Payne will spearhead an experienced group of linebackers. Payne is a punishing middle linebacker. Keylan King is coming off a solid junior season. Juniors David Sanders, Destin Challenger and Qua Thompson, along with sophomores Jeniah Jackson and John Pizzatola, will contribute.

SecondaryCornerback Chris Humes, a returning starter, is a rising star in the junior class. Junior safety Justin Carter also played a key role last season. The rest of the secondary, which doesn’t include a senior, will be short on experience. Juniors Mason Durden, Kymari Johnson, Terry Harris and Devon Brown will be heavily counted upon.

Special TeamsJunior Jake Hoffman, who shared placekicking duties during his junior season, will take over the role full-time. Hoffman or junior Kegan Gaither will likely handle punting duties.

The Jaguars put together their second-best season in school history in 2009. Spain Park had a large graduating class last season, which means growing pains are likely. Coach David Shores and the Jags will look to get plenty of experience for large junior and sophomore classes.

QuarterbacksTrey Matherson, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound sophomore, will take over at quarterback in his first season with the varsity program. Freshman Jay Burton will serve as Matherson’s backup. The Warriors are painfully inexperienced at quarterback and will rely heavily on the running game.

Running BacksSenior Chris Cooper, a 5-foot-6, 160-pound speedster, is back on the team after sitting out in 2009. Cooper was a star player in middle school and will likely be the focus of the Warriors’ offensive plans this season. Seniors Josh Lee and Lee Moore, along with juniors C.J. Clinkscale, D.J. Daniels and Demetrius Alexander, will also see their share of carries this season.

Wide ReceiversSeniors Jacob Macready, Matt Lovelace and Denorris Posey anchor an experienced group of receivers. Junior Tyler Gamble provides a nice target at tight end with his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. Seniors Dee Haynes and Tresman Gaddis, along with juniors Josh Stamps and Norton Geisler, will provide depth at the position.

Offensive LineMammoth tackle Najawuan Nash, a 6-foot-2, 330-pound senior, will anchor the offensive line. Senior Kyle Kreuser has starting

experience. Seniors Matt Johnson and Chris Swafford, along with juniors Kevin Ramay, Justin Jones, David Capers, Christian Collins and Jesse Masters, will look to fill in the holes.

Defensive LineSeniors Andrew Scorby, Travis Mahone, Brett Green and Jimmy Miller may not be returning starters, but the quartet has plenty of varsity experience. Seniors Josh May and DeAngelo Green and junior Nick Hamilton will provide depth.

LinebackersSeniors Adam McKenzie and Brandon King lead the linebacking corps, which should be a team strength this season. Seniors Harrison Gambill and Qualin Evans, along with junior Augustine Simelana, will also battle for playing time.

SecondarySenior cornerback Kris Abrams leads an inexperienced secondary. Austin Sapp, Avery Hale, Blake Dunn, Terry Carter, Austin Carter, Philip Wilson and Uriah Sailes, all juniors, will fight for the remaining starting

positions available.

Special TeamsPlacekicking duties should be a two-way battle between juniors Josh Stamps and Matt Nall. Nall and junior Austin Sapp are in the running at punter.

Excitement is back in the air at Thompson, where former Clay-Chalkville coach Bruce Hill takes over the program. The new coach has managed to get football back in the conversation in Alabaster. The Warriors hope to end a three-year playoff drought this season.

Tim Castille fondly remembers his high school football playing days at Briarwood Christian School.

The rest of the state remembers them well, too, with Castille’s name sitting near the top of the leaderboard in many offensive state records.

Castille, set to begin the fourth year of a National Football League career as a fullback with the Kansas City Chiefs, graduated from Briarwood following a fi ve-year playing career that stands as one of the most accomplished in the history of high school football in the state of Alabama.

Castille simply remembers his time at Briarwood as being the most fun he’s ever had on the gridiron.

“It was a blast,” Castille said. “It was the most fun I’ve had playing football. It’s better than college and the NFL. It’s the most pure form of football. You don’t understand until you’re done.”

Castille, who led the Lions to Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 3A championships in 1998 and 1999, was the fi rst of three sons of former University of Alabama All-American Jeremiah Castille to play for coach Fred Yancey at Briarwood Christian School.

Simeon Castille, who was a part of the Lions’ 2003 Class 5A state championship team, is currently in training camp with the United Football League’s Florida Tuskers. Caleb Castille, a 2010 Briarwood graduate, is a walk-on at the University of Alabama.

The eldest Castille sibling said Yancey has had a positive impact on the lives of every former Briarwood player.

“Before every game Coach Yancey would do my tape job for me,” Castille said. “I think that you get life lessons from him. He wants his players to be productive members of society. He’s teaching all of the time.”

Castille said playing at Briarwood not

Pro player

only prepared him for life, it also prepared him for playing football in both college and in the NFL.

“(Playing at Briarwood) was huge for me,” Castille said. “The coaches handled the whole situation great with me. They didn’t put a lot of pressure on me. They taught me the basics and the fundamentals of football. The things they taught me way back then have become really important to me

now. They’ve really helped me throughout my career.”

Castille said players who graduate from high schools in the Shelby County area and go on to play in college are already one step ahead of most other high school football players.

“Because the guys in our area were so good, the competition when I got to college wasn’t as big of a jump,” Castille said. “The athleticism wasn’t at a much different level.”

The rest of the state remembers them

The book on Slaughter: Slaughter puts fear in the hearts of offensive linemen. The pass-rushing specialist is impossible to block when he fi nds a gap in the offensive line. Slaughter is an instinctive player who can drop down to defensive end or play in the secondary.

) ) ) )Alex Payne

The book on Payne: Payne is a hard-hitting bruiser who is capable of playing inside or outside linebacker. Ball carriers have little hope when Payne discovers a path to make a tackle in the open fi eld. The heart and soul of the Jaguars’ defense is a three-year starter.

Cooper Harrington

The book on Harrington: Harrington, who committed to Southern Miss in May, will become a fourth-generation Golden Eagle next fall. He will make the switch from offense to defense as a senior. Harrington is a dangerous weapon for the Lions on either side of the ball.

QuarterbacksThe Rebels are in good shape at quarterback with seniors Daniel Kennedy, John Bullen and Hunter Rowe leading the offense. Kennedy and Rowe will spend all of their time at quarterback, while Bullen will also play running back and receiver.

Running BacksSeniors Bryce Cooke and Ryan Batson are newcomers to the team, but both will play key roles this season. Bullen, who will also spend time in the backfield, is a versatile athlete whose position can best be described as playmaker.

Wide ReceiversBullen leads a group of experienced receivers for the Rebels. Seniors Sam Bullard, Tanner Wood, Saxon Grimes and Casey Frederick, along with juniors Preston Parker, Hunter Winslett and Cody Garrett, will make up a group that should be the strength of the team.

Offensive LineFewer faces return up front, but the Rebels should field a solid offensive line with four seniors — tackles Corey Burton and Jordan Green and guards Clay Goss and Anthony Gads — playing key roles. Junior Myles Varner will likely start at center.

Defensive LineThe defensive front should be in good shape with seniors Corey Burton, Jordan Green, Clay Goss and Anthony Gads providing leadership. Seniors Alex Puckett and Nick Bates will also be in the mix for playing time.

LinebackersThe Rebels will be young at linebacker, with junior Preston Parker as the only player returning with any varsity experience. Seniors Saxon Grimes, Bryce Cooke, Hunter Rowe and Ryan Batson will need to step up.

SecondaryPlenty of experienced players return in the defensive backfield, including seniors Tanner Wood and John Bullen and juniors Hunter Winslett and Cody Garrett. Senior Hunter Rowe and Casey Frederick will also be in the mix for playing time in the secondary.

Special TeamsJunior Cody Garrett is a returning starter at placekicker and will also get a strong look to be the team’s punter as well.

The Rebels picked up a playoff win for the first time since 1993 last year in coach Vince DiLorenzo’s first season. Coosa Valley will try to take the next step and compete for a state championship in 2010. John Bullen

QuarterbacksSophomores Adrian Young and Sterling Riether, along with junior Hagan Joiner, will fight for the starting quarterback position. Young saw a few snaps at the position as a freshman.

Running BacksThe Chargers will rely on Josh Anderson to move a few chains this season. Anderson, a senior, is one of the few players returning with experience in the backfield. Junior Auston Wingard will follow in the footsteps of older brother Colton at the fullback position.

Wide ReceiversDylan Rodgers, John Fancher and Eric Braun, all seniors, will lead the group of receivers. Freshman Tucker Youngblood should also work his way into the rotation.

Offensive LineThe strength of the offense is in the big bodies up front, including returning starters in seniors Stephan Young and Seth Woody, junior Clayton Halbert and sophomore Jacob Coggins. Junior Chase Payne and eighth-graders Lance and Wade Martin will also be in line for playing time.

Defensive LineSmith said the defensive front may be the strong suit of the team, with the return of seniors Stephan Young and Seth Woody. Sophomore Jacob Coggins will be in line to start. Senior John Fancher and junior Chase Payne will play key roles.

LinebackersSenior Josh Anderson, an aggressive middle linebacker, is a returning starter. Juniors Auston Wingard and Clayton Halbert, along with freshman Tucker Youngblood, will round out the linebacking corps.

SecondaryThere aren’t many experienced players returning in the secondary, but the group should feature plenty of depth with senior Dylan Rodgers and juniors Eric Braun, Chase Crumpton, Sterling Riether and Hagan Joiner.

Special TeamsJunior Eric Braun is the only returning player with any experience in the kicking department. The punting role still hadn’t been settled entering fall practice.

The Chargers will be solid on the offensive and defensive line, but question marks surround the rest of the team following the graduation of a large senior class. Coach Tim Smith hopes to break in a group of brand new starters in the backfield and secondary this season. Josh Anderson

QuarterbacksThree players will split time at quarterback, including seniors Kevin Woody and Tyrone Pope and freshman Gavin Sumrall. Expect Pope to see plenty of designed running plays out of the backfield.

Running BacksTyrone Pope will likely spend most of his time as the Lions’ running back. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound speedster is capable of making plays in the open field. Junior Ethan Wicks and sophomore Dalton Sparks will also see their share of carries.

Wide ReceiversSenior David Fillingim and junior Douglas Ledlow are back after starting last season. Seniors Jordan Myers and Peyton Sumrall, along with freshman Ryan Tyson, will provide depth at the receiver position.

Offensive LineThe Lions will be young and inexperienced up front, with only one returning starter in junior guard Terrence Peeples. Sophomore Garrett McBride will man the other guard spot. Senior Ben Litrell and junior Moses Peters will see time at tackle. Sophomore Garret McBride will play in the middle at center.

Defensive LineSenior Ben Litrell and junior Moses Peters will play key roles on the defensive front at end positions. Junior Terrence Peeples, sophomore Garret McBride and freshman Ryan Tyson will fight for time at defensive tackle.

LinebackersJuniors Douglas Ledlow and Nick Gentille will be counted on at linebacker. Sophomore Aron Walters will also be an important piece of the puzzle.

SecondarySenior Tyrone Pope and Peyton Sumrall are returning starters in the defensive backfield. Seniors Kevin Woody and Jordan Myers will provide leadership. Sophomore Charles Pope will likely join Myers as a starting safety.

Special TeamsFreshman Ryan Tyson will handle placekicking duties in his first varsity season. Senior Tyrone Pope is back after handling kickoff and punting duties last year.

The Lions struggled through a winless season last year. Coach Vince Elliott hopes year two is much better. There is optimism within the Kingwood program with the return of senior playmaker Tyrone Pope. Tyrone Pope
