FOODNEXUSTHE NO. 1 AGROFOOD INNOVATION NETWORK

FoodNexus has established a business-led com-munity of multinationals, SMEs, and cooperatives in strong food regions of Europe together with the world’s best knowledge institutes in the area of food. FoodNexus is uniquely positioned to reach out to the complete EU food system, with actors all over Europe and other parts of the world which face increasing challenges related to food security and sustainability, safety and quality, and health and well-being.

FoodNexus will provide strong leadership to make change happen, having a profound positive impact on the economy, society, and environment.

The food sector must confront major interconnected societal challenges related to food (figure 1).

VISION, MISSION, STRATEGY

It also faces economic and structural challenges, in-cluding a shortage of skills, lack of new business crea-tion, and increased global competition, which lessen its competitive strength and potentially undermine the whole European economy.

The vision of FoodNexus is a transformed EU food system that is sustainable, consumer centred, ful-ly integrated, transparent, climate resilient, and resource efficient and thus competitive globally.1 By collaborating with other systems in the areas of health, bio-refining, bio-based materials, climate, water, energy, and ICT, FoodNexus will create the necessary conditions for the EU food system to meet societal challenges, strengthen its interna-tional competiveness, and contribute to econom-ic growth and job creation.

1 FoodNexus works to ensure optimal alignment with other European Food-initiatives, e.g Food 2030, EIT Food, ETP Food4Life, FoodDrinkEurope and ILSI-Europe.

The mission of FoodNexus is to serve as the “game-changing” driver of transformation in the EU food sector and to create and educate the leaders, entrepreneurs, talent, and innovators that drive breakthrough innovations, and the development and implementation of consum-er-oriented solutions addressing the three inter-connected societal challenges: food security and sustainability, food quality and safety, and food for health and well-being. By establishing a new eco-system, FoodNexus seeks to increase connectivity between all actors in the EU food system and to in-tegrate new actors who can bring new businesses, innovative technologies, and talent into the sys-tem, making it the most competitive in the world.

GAME CHANGER FOR TRANSFORMATION

The key challenge and ambition of FoodNexus is to create a connected European food system, in which global and diverse local food systems act together and re-enforce each other to:

• produce safe, affordable, climate-resilient, and nutritious food that meets consumers’ dietary needs and food preferences related to lifestyle and life stage, enabling them to lead healthier and more active lives;

• reduce waste and ensure maximum resource effi-ciency by making feed, chemicals, materials, and energy part of the system within a circular econ-omy;

• contribute to regional economic development, particularly in less favourable regions;

• develop new practices and services that guaran-tee full transparency with respect to safety, quality and ethical production;

• attract and educate the best people for increased innovation and entrepreneurship;

• empower consumers to make well-informed choices related to their dietary habits.

One novel aspect of the FoodNexus approach is its commitment to establishing and strengthening intelli-gent connectivity in the food system at different levels (figure 2) by:

• connecting, training, and teaching current and new actors to create an inspired new work force and critical mass for change, and combine comple-mentary resources, capacities, and knowledge;

• connecting, informing, and empowering consum-ers to put them at the heart of innovation and embracing them as partners within the system;

• creating and integrating new technologies, cognitive systems, talent, and business models from inside and outside the food system to reduce fragmentation and remove barriers to innovation;

• creating and aligning connectivity at various levels: local, regional, European, and international.
