Food sustainability: the role of innovation
• Who am I and why my story is connected with food sustainability and innovation?
• What’s happening to the Earth? And who is responsable?
• Why is so important to be aware on food sustainability to fix ourproblems?
• Food and sustainability: what is the role of innovation?

Obama’s quote
If we face the challenges of the future, there is nothing we can’t do. We
must reduce hunger and malnutrition, we must reverse the direction in
which climate change is taking us, we must work for a more sustainable
World. Climate change will continue to have an impact on our Planet,
producing energy will be increasingly difficult and even producing food
will become more and more difficult. All this will have repercussions.

Obama’s quote
Climate change is the challenge that will define the contours of our century
more dramatically than any other. Indeed, no nation will be immune to the
effects of global warming. Climate and food: two issues related. From one
hand, climate has a negative impact on food chain, producing instability and
poverty. On the other hand, the way food is produced today has a
devastating impact on climate.
So, the most expensive thing we can do is to do nothing!

Cultural innovation first
Lessons learned during these meetings:
- You can invent alone, but you need people to innovate.
- “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants“ (nanos
gigantum humeris insidentes).
- Innovation is a cultural process first.

oceans
At a global level, more than 90% of global warming trapped in the
atmosphere goes in the oceans. This energy changes the water life cycle
creating more and more violent and destructive storms, tiphons, hurricanes
and at the same time, in other regions, it creates drought.
In 2016 in USA, these disasters lead to a $175 billions loss.

79 climate wars. (Adelphi per G7). 200 billions migrants. 1,7 billions people affected by climate in 10 years e 700,000 people died. 100 billion dollars per year loss.

Why is so important to be aware on food sustainability?
25% of GHG is caused by intensive agriculture (methane produced by rice
paddies or nitrous oxide resulting from the use of fertilizers). Livestock
produces 40% of global warming more than all the transport sector at a
global level.
From the other side, food system is the largest sector affected by climate
change. In the last 30 years climate change has reduced global food
production by 1 to 5%.

Cause
1,3 billions tons of food are wasted every year. The economic value is 750
billion dollars. This waste generates 3,3 billions tons of GHG in terms of
energy used to produce it and disposal it.
Agriculture is responsable for 5,1/6,1 Gt CO2 per year, which means 10-12%
of the global GHG.
47% of methane emissions are due to agriculture (73% from livestock; and
26% from fertilizers). By 2030, without any adjustment, nitrogen oxide levels
will increase by 35 to 60% and methane by 60%.

Climate change is at the end of your fork: the role of innovation
Competitiveness Innovation is a strategic leverage for an
efficient use of resources in agriculture and for competitive advantage of
firms.
Sustainability Innovation and new technologies support new
products develpment, productive processes and new demand models .
Rural communities Innovation helps to engage and empower
rural communities, improving local conditions and relations among rural
and urban areas.

Food sustainability index
Food Sustainability Index (FSI) is a 25 Countries index classified on the basis
of food systems sustainability in 3 areas: food losses and wastes, sustainable
agriculture and nutritional challenges.
100 is the maximum level of sustainability (i.e. food system capability to not
stress natural resources).

Food losses and waste Methane from food in landfill is 21 times more damaging than CO2. Food loss in DCs and Food Waste in Developed C. While 795 millions peoplesuffer for hungry, 1,3 tons of food iswasted. Avoiding 1/3 of food waste wecould feed all people suffering. The worst Countries: EAU; Indonesia; Arabia.

Sustainability agriculture Water stress for agriculture. The worstCountries are: Egypt (114,9%); Arabia (867,9%); EAU (2.208%) on respect of withdrawling of other renewableresources.
Riduction of pesticeds and fertilizers; water efficency: GPS tractors; satellites; big data; sensors; drons; verticalfarming; AI.
Nutritional Challenges 45% of under 5 children deaths are linked to nutrition. The worst Countriesare: Sudafrica; Nigeria; India.
