ACTIVITY 2
Reading Nutrition Information in Food Labels
Introduction
Food labels present nutrition in two ways in quantities such as percentage of daily values
and reference values developed by FDA specifically for use on food labels. The Daily Value
column provides a ballpark estimate of how individual foods contribute to the total diet. It
compares key nutrients in a serving of foods with the daily goals of a person consuming 2000kcalories. A 2000 kcalorie diet is considered about right for moderately active women, teenage
girls and sedentary men. Older adults, children and sedentary women may need fewer kcalories.
A 2500 kcalorie diet is considered about right for many men, teenage boys and active women.
