Plascs in Contact with Food

There is a wide variety of reasons, why food comes into

contact with certain materials. These reasons are

generally of the funconal kind. Many foodstuffs already

come into contact with special machines or cookware

during the course of their producon or preparaon.

What happens when substances from the plasc are

passed on to the food?

The constuon of plascs, that are intended to come

into contact with foodstuff, should preferably not

migrate any substances to the food. Should this never-

theless occur, then only very marginal quanes may

migrate,

♦ that do not endanger human health

♦ that lead to no unwarranted change in the

composion of the food

♦ that do not cause any deterioraon of the

odour and flavour of the food

in accordance with Arcle 3 of the EU Regulaon

1935/2004.

There is no special approval procedure for materials that

come into contact with food. However, there are

aforemenoned requirements of the EU-Regulaon

1935/2004, which all plascs and their components

have to fulfill, if they are to be used in contact with food.

The European framework regulaon 1935/2004 on

materials and components intended to come into

contact with food, is effecve since 27th October 2006.

Please note: The specific measure Arcle 5 Para. 1 of

EU-Regulaon 10/2011 is to be crystallised from the

EU-Regulaon 1935/2004.

On 14th January 2011, the European Commission

adopted this new Regulaon 10/2011 on plasc

materials and arcles intended to come into contact

with food. Rubber, silicones and ion-exchange resins do

not fall under the area of applicaon of this regulaon,

which entered into force on 4th February 2011 and be-

came effecve from 1st May 2011. The Commission

Regulaon (EU) No. 10/2011 repeals the Commission

Direcve 2002/72/EC.

This new regulaon will result in some changes relang

to legal requirements for materials and arcles made of

plasc that come into contact with food. The European

Commission established transional provisions for the

period of me from 1st May 2011 unl 31st December

2015, so that the manufacturers have me to change

their procedures in order to meet with the requirements

of this new regulaon.

Documentaon

The EU 1935/2004 can been seen as a standard for

uncoloured as well as for most coloured Centroplast

plasc materials, based upon available declaraons of

compliances of the raw material manufacturers.

These declaraons of compliance state the migraons

values in accordance with the specific measure Arcle 5

of EU No. 10/2011.

Our semi-finished plascs labeled “Food Grade” are now

addionally tested for adhering to the raw-material

migraon values and are documented by the corre-

sponding declaraon of compliance. Content is the assay

of compliance with the requirements of the Consumer

Goods Ordinance and the Regulaon (EU) No. 10/2011.

The declaraon of compliance allows the respecve

distributor of the tested semi-finished plasc to permit

his manufactured plasc component to come into

contact with food.

Good Manufacturing Pracce (GMP)

The manufacturing of materials and arcles that are

intended to come into contact with food is defined

Measures undertaken by Centroplast

by the Regulaon (2023/2006) on Good Manufacturing

Pracce.

The essenal requirements of this Regulaon 2023/2006

are:

- Quality assurance system

- Quality control system

- Documentaon

The producon of our products is subject to this

requirements.

Labelling

Owing to compulsory labelling, as

described in Arcle 15 of the EU-Regulaon

1935/2004, our products are labelled with

the “glass-and-fork” scker.

Traceability

We have integrated the procedures and systems into our

business processes based on DIN EN ISO 9001:2008, in

order to ensure the traceability of the “Food Grade

Material” in accordance with Arcle 17.
