Food for thought
AS a child, I was in simple awe of mygrandmother’s china. The dainty Shelleyteacups with fine handles for elegant
fingers. The fragile curves of the saucers. Thepretty motifs of cottage flowers in diaphanoushues, or the rich designs in plum and goldetched in the meticulous detail of a bygoneera.
They seemed to be the remnants from arefined and immaculate world ofunselfconscious gentility, where I imaginedthat women wore gossamer and gloves anddined in serenity broken only by tinklinglaughter and the clink of silver teaspoonsagainst fine china.
The magic of those reveries is brought tolife at High Societea. This secluded teahousein the leafy suburb of Clayfield is devoted tothe palate-pleasing pleasures of high tea.
Owner Kathy Heath has coupledknowledge, gleaned from 20 years incorporate catering, with her passion, flair andattention to minutiae, not to mention a myriadof personal touches, to create a teahouse thatis as much an experience of winsomeindulgence as fine dining.
Shielded from the street by lush greenery,High Societea is a tranquil nook where guestscan choose to sit inside, in a room decoratedwith Kathy’s own antique sideboards, mirrorsand lamps, or out in the courtyard, at tableslaid with damask clothes and linen napkins,
sterling silver cutlery and one of 100 daintyantique china tea sets patterned with sweetpeas, bluebirds and other delicate designs.
The scent of old-fashioned roses freshlypicked from the gardens of two local rose-growers wafts from vases of blousy bloomsthat create the centerpiece of each table.
The high tea three-tiered stands arriveladen with selections of petite gourmetdelights. Miniature homestyle cakes andtartlets nestle next to mouthwatering ribbonsandwiches and quiches and areaccompanied by a pot of premium leaf tea orplunger coffee.
High tea would not be complete withoutcucumber sandwiches, fluffy scones anddainty pikelets – my personal favourites –made to perfection from a family recipe.Choose from sweet or savoury selections, ranging in price from a cost of $29.50/person,or the Royal Ascot High Tea, for those whowant the best of both worlds, which is servedwith a complimentary glass of Pimms.
This is not somewhere to just drop in forcoffee and cake, but the destination for aspecial outing. It's a place to take your motheror daughter or old friends for a memorabledelight that will leave them thinking about theuninitiated with whom they can share thedelicacies of this hidden gem in the future. –Fiona Cameron.
