    Reweaving The Safety Net

A Nice Holiday Thanks to Lori Moore

    Fast Fact:

    Record breaking year at

    KLF: 77,137 people served

    consisting of 26,963

    households, 44,622 adults,

    and 32,298 children.

Were all in this together and wecan help each other. Nearly a year ago atour last annual meeting, students fromKalamazoo Central High School helpedthose in attendance act out Stone Soup.

This ancient tale was retold from anEastern perspective wherein the fright-ened villagers, long ravaged by harshtimes, open their hearts and their cup-boards, and in making a simple soup

meal, nd how much they each haveto give --- and how much more comesback in return.

Times are tough in Michigan. Fromunemployment to child poverty the sta-tistics are bad, indeed some of the worstin the nation. And, in the midst of themost challenging economic times indecades, there is also some incrediblecommunity building underway. Thisyear, our annual fund drive asked peo-

ple to join us in Feeding Community/Feeding Hope. While the numbers arenot yet nal, there has been an amazingresponse to this request. People havedug deep recognizing that together wecan, and do, make a difference for and

with each other. The Detroit Free Press reports:

Hunger is a symptom, like a fever thatcomes with the u. The causes are

countless. Unemployment. Underemployment. Drug abuse. Mental illnessCredit card problems. Health problems

Just bad luck. Hunger is so complex andso vast that nobody can put an exactnumber on how many people in Michigan are struggling, although no one disputes the problem is growing. Your support, whether in contribu

tions of food, time, or cash, is an es

sential ingredient in this communitysStone Soup. Every day we hear from

volunteers and donors how their gift oftime, food or cash provides them witha bounty of blessings. There is something incredible about food and clearlythrough the act of sharing, both giverand receiver are nourished.

In 2009, the Kalamazoo Loaves &Fishes Grocery Pantry Program servedmore than 77,000 people. In 2010 we

expect to be challenged to repeat thafeat and in partnership to nd new waysto get emergency food into the handsof our neighbors in need. Be assuredthat together we will, in the midst ofthese hard times, continue to open ourhearts and our cupboards to people inneed and in doing so build a strongermore vital community.
