Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes grew out of challenging economic times. We have

a long history of adjusting and rebalancing limited resources within the context of a solid commitment to promoting food security through our emergency food assistance programs. It’s always been a balancing act and we’ve always needed to adjust matching the particular mix of resources with the emergency needs that confronted us.

At the beginning, the work we were doing was often And since the beginning, it was the combination of donations – both food and time – mixed with dollars that made things work.

From hundreds of pounds of food providing emergency food assistance to a handful of people to the tens of thousands of pounds of food serving thousands of people, KLF has adjusted to the changing economic realities developing a standard of stewardship that the community can rely on.

Today, KLF works through a simple recipe of volunteer time, donations of food, and the funding necessary to support staff, supplement food resources, ensure safety, and support service delivery. How many of us remember the act on The Ed Sullivan

Show where a man spun a table full of plates at the end of tall sticks? It was a balancing act—where if a plate stopped spinning before the fellow got back it crashed dramatically to many plates were spinning, but I do remember thinking that if I were doing the spinning, there would be

a lot of smashed china. Those plates could be a metaphor for the myriad of efforts that together make KLF and the Grocery Pantry Program work.

Today, that standard of stewardship has positioned KLF to adjust yet again to meet today’s reality. That standard requires putting no- and low-cost gaps by searching

for the best, low-cost alternative. That standard of stewardship relies on keeping overhead costs low. And, that standard of stewardship has helped staff and volunteers reframe the Grocery Pantry Program in a way that will contain costs while allowing us to address growing need. We’re stepping up to the current challenge and we’re able to do that because you know that you can rely on KLF to steward the resources – food, time, dollars – to meet real-time needs of real people in our community. Not surprisingly, your support is more important today than ever before. Thank you all.

Kids Giving to Kids

The holidays are always a difficult time for families that don’t have the resources to

provide meals for their children. In December, KLF received a number of important donations from school groups that conducted food and fund drives so that children and their families in our community would have food for the holidays. Here are some of the amazing results: Kalamazoo West Christian Elementary collected 1701 pounds, bringing their 5 year total to more than 10,000 pounds during their holiday collections.Ryan Intermediate School raised $2006.14 and collected 694 pounds of food.

Kalamazoo Central High School student leadership organized and held a “Stuff the Bus” food drive during their “Week of Caring” in December. In total, students and teachers collected a whopping 4087 pounds of food during the event, which was held at the West Main Harding’s Marketplace.

Gobles High School student, Kurtis Dickerson, planned and held (with the help of students and faculty) a “Concert 4 Life” on December 20. The event, which developed out of his Senior Project, raised $495.00 to be used to purchase food for hungry people.

Monthly Wish List: February: Hearty Soups, March: Canned Fruit

Save: Ever have left over diapers after your child or grandchild has grown out of a particular size? KLF can use those unused leftovers. Please drop them off at our warehouse or call for more information – 488-2617 ext. 213

Do: Would you like to volunteer but cannot because of your work schedule? KLF is open the 2nd Saturday of every month and would love to see you there. Bring a loved one, too. For more information, call Phyllis Hepp, 488-2617 ext. 210.

You Can Make A Difference

Local Companies Lend a Helping HandA number of companies with local stores extended a helping hand this holiday season. We are very grateful for the local support of these organizations at a time when retailers are also “feeling the pinch.”

Meijer, on Westnedge, donated $1000 for food needs during the holiday season.

Target Distribution Center, provided a $2000 Community Grant to support the KLF Grocery Pantry Program

Local Hardings Market sites once again helped KLF by donating time and money in December. The West Main Hardings donated their parking lot and collected food for the Kalamazoo Central High School’s “Stuff the Bus” food drive supporting Loaves & Fishes. They also hosted the final Lori Moore Cookbook sale of 2008 and contributed $600 in employee donations. The Woodbridge location developed a canned food drive where they matched each can that was donated. They collected 576 pounds of food.

Walmart Corporation, through its local Gull Road store, donated $1000 to KLF for support of food programs.

Sam’s Club, contributed a $1000 community grant to help feed hungry people in our community.
