a Fantastic Experience—

October 3 at 5:30pm in Heritage Hall

Join us on Saturday, October 3 in Heritage Hall and enjoy time with members of the NUMC family as we break bread together. Bring a dish to share (drinks and paper products will be provided)!

The Discipleship Leadership team will host, and the event will feature a presentation of photos and videos from Mark Deshon’s midsummer Wesley Pilgrimage to England. Mark will talk about his experiences during his 10-day immersion in the life and spirit of the founders of the Methodist movement, John and Charles Wesley. His visit took him to Epworth, Oxford, Bristol, London and Salisbury—so much to see, and so much to learn!

John Wesley’s message of Christian growth and mutual support shaped the early Methodist Church. More recently, it also has sparked the Covenant Discipleship method that has been embraced by many at NUMC—a model for practicing our discipleship by committing ourselves to acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion in small, supportive groups.

We look forward to this time together and hope that you will be a part of this delightful evening of food and faith!

It has been just over a month since my heart ablation. I am feeling as if I have a new heart. Of course, we in the Christian faith often talk about having a new heart. Actually it is a common theme through the

Old and New Testaments.

Ezekiel says: A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh (Ez. 36.26). Sounds a little strange to us for God to remove one heart and give us another. But that is the transformational process of becoming a disciple of Christ.

One of the central purposes of our life together as a faith community is to work with God to soften “hearts of stone and allow people to develop hearts for love alone.” Hearts for love alone for me looks like this:

Loving God…

Being disciplined in my relationship with God.

Loving what God loves…

Being intentional about caring and respecting all.

Loving the ways God does…

Being deliberate about the way I live my life.

May you find a soft heart, a heart of flesh, a heart for love alone.

Paint a room Do some landscaping job – mowing, edging, mulching, etc. Do housecleaning (“spring clean” a room; shampoo a carpet; etc.) Provide a day of handyman tasks Give lessons (music, knitting, quilting, etc.) Do some pet sitting/dog walking, etc. Provide an “antique” item you don’t need anymore

And a couple of invitations: Do you know someone with a business who would donate a gift card? Would you like to join the silent auction planning committee? Our first auction two years ago was a huge success. Let’s make this one even better! Bidding begins the week of January 18. Final bidding will be January 23, at FF&FF!

NUMC’s commitment of $7500 (over 3 years)toward a new Habitat house foundation has been paid in full! Thank you to all who donated!

Africa University Update

NUMC, along with United Methodist churches from around the world, supports Africa University (AU). AU is a United Methodist University that strives to “develop leaders on the continent of Africa” and “be a beacon for any African child who yearns for a first-rate tertiary education.”AU’s main campus is in Mutare, Zimbabwe.

On 6/13/15, AU awarded degrees to 694 students from 17 African countries--the largest graduating class since it opened in 1992.

Fields of study include business, public administration, humanities, social sciences, natural resources management, health sciences, education, and theology.

Living the Questions 2 Led by Rev. David Palmer

Tuesday Evenings, 7-8:30pm

This class offers a safe environment for people to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice. Even if you have no previous Bible study, come and explore our Bible with others. Experience good conversations that will help you clarify your own faith. Living the Questions 2 will help you in discovering the significance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like in today's world. Come and journey into deeper faith. The only thing you need to bring to class is a Bible. All other material will be provided.

2015 NUMC Youth Mission Trip Rosedale, WV

We had an amazing week in West Virginia!

God moved in so many great ways during our trip—the work that was done, the discussions we had together and the bonds that grew stronger.

The mission trip this year was definitely a lot of fun but was also a different experience than years past. Being in the mountains of West Virginia had a different feel than other mission trips that have been in cities or towns. The community was extremely small but tightly knit together. We all got some really great work done and met some really great people from all over the country. –Jack Smith

The mission trip overall was a very moving experience that brought me closer to my faith. I met so many amazing people and did work that made me feel grateful for being there by the end of the week. The people I met, the friends I made, and the experience that I gained from the trip was truly empowering and really revealed God to me through every possible nook and cranny. I'd have to say that for me personally it was one of the best weeks of my life, and I would definitely recommend it. –Ryan Meredith

Bunting Library lost a hard-working volunteer and supporter when our dear friend Tom Bailey died early this year. We have received funds to purchase books dedicated in his memory. He shared his love of LEGOs with many delighted children who visited the library. We have selected 4 LEGO books for children and the young at heart to enjoy—

LEGO City: Fire Truck to the Rescue, by Sonia Sander (Scholastic Reader, Level 1). There's a fire in LEGO City! Fire-fighters are on their way in their fire truck. They'll save the day with their tall ladder and the very best fire equipment!

LEGO City: 3,2 1, Liftoff!, by Sonia Sander (Scholastic Reader, Level 1). Go on an adventure into space with LEGOs!

LEGO City: Mystery on the LEGO Express, by Trey King. A famous actress loses her award statue on the LEGO Express. Mr. Clue will solve this action-packed, hilarious mystery-adventure!

LEGO City: Follow That Easter Egg!, by Trey King. Two crooks want to get rich fast by stealing a priceless golden egg on its way to a new museum. Can they get away with their nefarious plan?

Tom was a man of deep faith and conviction. He also believed in honoring our country. A book we are sure he would appreciate was purchased to commemorate both.

The Faiths of the Founding Fathers, by David L. Holmes. Here is a concise, illuminating look at the spiritual beliefs of our founding fathers. These range from orthodox Christian views to agnostic, and illustrate a faith quite unlike the Christianity of today's evangelicals. Holmes also examines the role of religion in the lives of the presidents since WWII. This book will appeal to American history buffs and anyone concerned about the role of religion in American culture.

Choir update: All of the NUMC choirs are up and running. Sign up today!

The Chancel Choir needs men! Consider giving us a try. Perhaps a short-term commitment will do the trick.

Here’s an opportunity:

Carol Festival rehearsals begin Thursday October 15, 7:15-8pm in the choir room. All singers (any voice part) are welcome to join us as we prepare for the NUMC Carol Festival, which will take place on Sunday, 12/13 at 3pm. The service will include musicians from UD, the poetry of Susan Palo Cherwien, and carols both old and new.

Blessing of the Animals Sunday, October 4 at 3pm

If the weather is good, we’ll be in the side yard; if bad, we’ll meet in the chapel narthex. Bring your critters!

All Saints Vespers Service Sunday, November 1 at 5pm

(potluck to follow at 6pm)

Led by the combined NUMC choirs, our theme is world peace as we remember those who have been casualties of warfare and unrest throughout the world.

Brunch Angels

We are still on the hunt for some good Brunch Angels. Our sign-up list is looking pretty bare. UMW got on the list, but they're one of the few. We continue to have 20+ college students on Sundays, and meet in Memorial Lounge. You may drop things off in the kitchenette when you come to worship.

We’ll put them out, and take care of the rest. We will even do dishes and put them in the Wesley Lounge for you to pick them up (please pick them up). So grab some friends, make a couple of favorite recipes, and make a room full of college students very happy with a "taste from home”.

The sign-up sheet by the Wesley Lounge door has more information to help you choose a Sunday.

Homecoming November 7!!!

On Saturday, November 7, we'll be having a tailgate prior to the football game, and look forward to seeing you there. Check for signs outside the Wesley Lounge for more details and to sign up to attend our "Stop by and Celebrate" Tailgate party.

We're Methodists, so you know we'll have good food, and good clean fun.

Be Still and Know that I am God

In an effort to begin to slow down rather than speed up for the holidays and Advent, consider learning a bit about mindfulness and how it can begin to lower stress levels and help savor what is present in your life, allowing you to become more open to God.

Mindfulness is a way to live in the world being fully aware of the present moment without judgment—with kindness and compassion.

This way of living alleviates the risk of being caught up in past regrets or living somewhere out in the future and brings us right here right now to what is truly the only moment we are alive.

No experience necessary! I will be teaching an Introduction to Mindfulness class 11am-12pm on 5 consecutive Sundays, 11/22-12/21 (room location TBA).

Come and learn to live in the present moment; to be present for your one precious life.

Renewing Our Foundation (ROF) Update:

Photovoltaic Solar Energy Installation Completed

We can’t see it from the ground, but to provide proof, the accompanying picture documents that the ROF Phase A(2015) photovoltaic solar panel project installation is complete. The installer, KWSolar, has covered the Education Wing flat roof with panels and run the wiring, and the installation is primed to start generating electricity for us. What remains is the final checkout and interconnection to the City of Newark electrical grid in early October. Between the yearly energy cost savings and solar renewal energy credit sales, the 31 kW solar system is forecast to generate ~$9-10K/yr. cash that will be used initially to pay back the 10-year financing loan. After the 10 years, the yearly system savings will be used to reduce church operating utility expenditures.

Initial ROF Capital Campaign Coming to an End in December

COMPLETED:

From the initial 2013 project—

installed a new boiler and heating system in the front portion of the building

created a serving kitchen by Heritage Hall

renovated and made the Cokesbury Lobby restrooms handicap-accessible

From 2014 projects—

installed a new Education Wing boiler

installed a new roof

From 2015--

installed the solar panels

This means that all of the initial planned ROF Phase A projects are complete.

The 2012 ROF 3-year Capital Campaign raised ~$1.3 million in pledges for this work. If the final contributions are made to fulfill all those pledges, we will have successfully accomplished all these building improvements without incurring any debt (save the solar installation which will pay for itself)—Praise the Lord! And many thanks for the generosity of the NUMC family!

To realize this successful end, all members who still have outstanding pledged amounts are encouraged to make their final contributions by December 2015.
