FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION(FAO)

WHAT IS IT?

• It leads international efforts to defeat hunger.

• FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet to negotiate agreements and debate.

• This organisation helps developing countries and improves agriculture, forestry and fisheries, also it ensures good nutrition.

HISTORY

• The international organization for food and agriculture emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century.

• The Second war world effectively ended the International Agricultural Institute, because it was only officially dissolved by resolution of its Permanent Committee.

• Its functions were then transferred to the recently established FAO.

BUDGET

• It is funded by its members.• The voluntary contributions provided by members and

other partners, support mechanical and emergency assistance to governments for clearly defined purposes.

THE SEVEN DEPARTMENTS OF FAO

• Administration and Finance.• Agriculture and Consumer Protection.• Economic and Social Development.• Fisheries and Aquaculture.• Forestry.• Natural Resource Management and Environment.• Technical Cooperation.

STRUCTURE AND FINANCE

• FAO was established on 16 October 1945,in Canada.

• The agency meets every two years to review the work carried out by the organization and to approve a Programme of Work and Budget for the next two-year period.

• The Conference elects a council of 49 member states that acts as an interim governing body, and the Director-General, that heads the agency.

AGRICULTURE

• FAO created the International Plant Protection Convention in 1952.

• This international treaty organization works to prevent the international spread of pests and plant diseases.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

• It describes company activities that provide the local community with opportunities to develop.

• While some activities may be part of the company’s core business, others may be additional activities that enhance the company’s reputation and its relationship with the community.

FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE

• It promotes the development of the province’s fishing and aquaculture industries.

• The Provincial Government works with industry and other partners to ensure the fishery is economically viable.

• The objective is to optimize the value of the fishery for all participants and for the province.

FORESTRY

• It helps nations manage their forests in a sustainable way.

• The Organization's approach balances social, economic and environmental objectives.

FOOD• In 1996, FAO organized the World Food Summit,

attended by 112 Heads or Deputy Heads of State and Government.

• Malnutrition in all its forms – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight and obesity.

Natural Resource Management and Environment

• It promotes integrated natural resources management in the context of watersheds, river basins and ecosystems.

TECHNICAL COOPERATION

• It is a long standing international organisation concerned with cooperation on defence science and technology matters.
