Take into consideration that many installed fonts neednot only disk space but also a lot of memory. With lots ofinstalled fonts the computer can slow down noticeably. Therefore install only those fonts you really need per-manently. Deinstall fonts you only need now and thenwithout removing them from your hard disk.

Note: To avoid conflicts take care to open font families ina single format only, PostScript or TrueType.2

8 Fonts on Printers

Printers, that is, all RIPs, laser imagesetters, and officeprinters, can print fonts if they receive the relevantinformation in one of three ways:

■ From the printer’s memory: Many manufacturerssupply their printers with a variety of fonts alreadyinstalled.

■ The PC sends the print job to the printer together withinformation about the fonts used in the document. Ifyou use a PostScript printer and a font is not installedon it, the font definition is downloaded to the printer. The job is then processed. This process is commonlycalled automatic downloading. For non PostSriptprinters the information about the fonts are sent asoutline descriptions or bitmap data of the single cha-racters.

8 Character Sets of Fonts

The Windows operating system comes with an addi-tional accessory named Character Map (CHAR-MAP.EXE), with which you can view which charactersare in a font and which key combination generates aspecific character in a specific font.

With this accessory e.g. you can easily find out whichcharacters a symbol font contains.

Additionally you can copy characters, which are notaccessable with the keyboard, to the clipboard in orderto paste them into your application program.

Note: When you paste characters selected in CharacterMap into your application program, they might lose thefont you selected in Character Map. In this case selectthem and format them for the font within the applica-tion program.

To learn about this accessory see the manual of yourWindows version.
