WELCOMEIN MY 25+ YEARS AS A CIO AND IT LEADER, I’ve never seen something so effective at changing the conversations with my business partners as Technology Business Management. Not only does TBM help us improve efficiency, it allows us to communicate our costs and consumption so that our business partners finally understand IT’s value.

One area where TBM proved invaluable for me was formulating my annual operating plan. Before TBM, we were simply asked to do more with less. With TBM, we knew what drove our IT spending and why. We started talking about tradeoffs. Greater efficiency was always part of the picture, but our plan was now based on facts – not emotion.

The Technology Business Management Council has been at the forefront of this change since our establishment as a nonprofit in April 2012. With over 1,300 technology leaders from the world’s most respected companies, we’re driving the standards and best practices for managing the business of IT. No one else is doing this.

Now it’s time for our second annual TBM Conference. Held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, this year’s conference has doubled in size. It brings together Global 2000 CIOs, CTOs and CFOs — in a gorgeous venue — to learn from peers who have transformed their IT organizations with TBM.

Attendees have an unprecedented opportunity to:

• Forge new connections with IT leaders from around the world.• Glean new strategic insights and tactical tools to use with your business partners.• Learn about TBM, understand actual use cases and look ahead to the future.

Come join your fellow IT and finance leaders to network, connect, and learn how you can transform your IT organization and help your business to innovate. There is no better opportunity to do all of this than at the 2nd annual TBM Conference!

From Facebook to Goldman Sachs and Microsoft to Disney, the world’s most forward-thinking companies in nearly every industry are embracing a new discipline – Technology Business Management (TBM).

Proven to help technology leaders run the business of IT, TBM is changing the conversation about IT’s role in the enterprise by adopting business principles and processes, empowering the CIO to operate much like the CEO of an IT as a Service business.

The TBM Council convenes technology executives to collaborate on how to measure, optimize, and communicate business value. Our framework defines essential disciplines like cost transparency and benchmarking, service portfolio management, value-based scorecarding, demand-based IT planning, and more. Our innovative work has drawn the engagement of some of the nation’s leading institutions — including The Wall Street Journal, KPMG, and Vanderbilt University — who are exploring the link between IT initiatives and economic value. Unlike other executive forums, the TBM Council is the only one comprised of real-world IT leaders focused on solving the problem of how to create the most value by collaborating with business partners.

TUESDAY

In this post-recession, pro-regulation, dependent-upon-technology environment, CIOs require different skills to communicate to business leaders; they require skills that enable fact-based decision making. In this insightful keynote, First American Financial CEO Dennis Gilmore recounts his organization’s odyssey through the 2008 financial crisis and how his team, led by CIO Larry Godec, utilized TBM to determine the answer to fundamental questions: Are we spending the right amount — or too little, or too much — on technology to continue to grow and compete?

Larry will then provide his perspective on how TBM enabled him to cut costs, grow innovation, and leverage technology to distinguish First American — a journey that earned him the prestigious Business Transformation Award at the 2013 inaugural TBM Conference.

Larry Godec is Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer of First American. In that capacity, he leads all divisions within the technology portfolio including strategic planning, application development, security, R&D, governance, infrastructure, and data center operations that support and grow the business.

Dennis J. Gilmore is Chief Executive Officer of First American Financial Corporation and also serves as President of the company’s largest subsidiary, First American Title Insurance Company. Prior to the Title Insurance Company spin-off from The First American Corporation, Gilmore served as Chief Operating Officer for that company and was responsible for helping to establish the course of its operating and technology initiatives and managing its offshore operations.

Today the IT industry is changing and a new style of IT is emerging – in part due to trends such as big data, the cloud, mobility, and security. CIOs must effectively run the business while still investing in innovation to improve business outcomes. IT professionals must also become business leaders who are closely integrated with the business itself, not just IT. In this session, Ramón will speak about the importance of CIOs in developing a flexible, innovative culture and hiring the right people for success. He will also share his experience that proves it is only though collaboration that IT professionals and other leaders will ultimately improve business outcomes.

Ramón Baez is Senior Vice President & Global Chief Information Officer (CIO) of HP, responsible for the global information technology (IT) strategy and all of the company’s IT assets that support HP employees and help drive strategic company priorities. This includes worldwide application development, the company’s private cloud, IT security, data management, technology infrastructure, and telecommunication networks.

It’s estimated that there will be over 35,000 M&A transactions this year. CIOs have an opportunity to play a key role in these transactions. How? By enabling board members to answer the three fundamental questions of any merger, acquisition or divestiture: How will this action grow revenue, decrease costs, and mitigate the risks of execution?

Our panel of CIOs will discuss how TBM enables agility in M&A by providing clarity into contextual and core services, and by identifying the redundancies and synergies that are key to making fact-based decisions. DuPont and DIRECTV CIOs will discuss how TBM helped them define appropriate divestitures while Univision’s CIO will discuss how TBM helped determine the appropriate candidates for economic growth through acquisition.

TBM is changing the way business partners understand the value of technology. This is a good and necessary outcome. But now there is a bigger question at hand: How is TBM changing the conversation all the way to the top?

Our panel outlines the metrics and performance conversations being held today by executive board members across industries. Find out whether your board views IT as an influencer and how it looks at IT investments in the context of the business. Learn how TBM can ensure that the conversation at the top is one of IT influence and not cost take-outs. Understand the external view of IT as a business differentiator in terms of efficiencies, revenue growth, and risk mitigation.

It is often said that TBM is a journey. For many, the journey is one of transforming from a technology-centric organization to a services-oriented organization. It’s about maturing along the way — in approach, methodology, and processes. Perhaps no one understands this journey better than Goldman Sachs. Don Duet, Co-head of the Technology Division at Goldman Sachs, shares how his team is creating a cost engine that enables application owners to choose the hosting products they need, at prices their businesses can afford. Joined by CFO of IT, Suzette Unger and Managing Director, Caroline Arnold, the trio describes what it takes for a team — and an organization — to mature as they work through this transformational initiative. Moving from cost transparency to product and rates management, this metamorphosis won Goldman Sachs the 2013 TBM Business Innovation Award.

How Technology is Changing Global Commerce

Commerce makes the world go round and eBay is right in the middle of it. In 2013, eBay’s engine enabled more than $200 billion in global commerce volume. With over 600 million items for sale at any given second, eBay is one of the largest on-line marketplaces in the world. PayPal, with 148 million active users, is one of the largest and most trusted payments systems in the world. This unprecedented growth was achieved through innovations that disrupted the commerce landscape. These innovations drove unparalleled transaction volume which required the largest Big Data and High Performance Compute infrastructure expansion in eBay inc’s history. It also required a structured approach to run technology like a business. In this session, Dean will share eBay’s Digital Service Efficiency metric which measures the productivity of this global commerce engine through C-Level KPIs; performance, cost, environmental impact, and revenue.

Dean Nelson is Vice President of Global Foundation Services for eBay Inc, which enables more than $200 billion in global commerce volume each year. He is responsible for Strategy, Architecture, and Operational functions of eBay Inc’s Mission Critical Data Centers, Compute & Storage Hardware, Global Networking, and Network Security. Nelson is also a core member of the eBay Social Innovation team.

Adriana (Andi) Karaboutis was appointed Vice President & Global Chief Information Officer for Dell in November 2011. In this role, she is responsible for managing an efficient and innovative global IT enterprise focused on technology breakthroughs for the company and its customers.

Many enterprises are using technology to transform their businesses. But few are as impacted so thoroughly by IT – both internally and in the way they deliver customer value – as Dell. And few Dell executives have been so involved in that transformation as Andi Karaboutis. As Global CIO, she has led the creation of an integrated technology and business operations strategy to realign operations in support of Dell’s shift from a single source hardware provider to an end-to-end solutions provider. In this talk, Karaboutis will share how her team shifted to an IT service delivery model to serve this new business. With an improved focus on IT cost drivers and financial transparency, she established metrics that ensured accountability for 98% of costs while maintaining 98% SLA attainment. In doing so, her team is now delivering capabilities that many business executives can only dream about: cutting-edge data mining and mobility solutions that provide real-time information accessibility, decision-support, and self service for engineering, sales, marketing, service delivery, and fulfillment operations.

Whether or not the cloud enables efficiencies — in hardware, software, infrastructure scaling — is no longer the question. The question now is how to adopt critical applications to cloud environments. In this session TBM Board Member and CTO, Jim Scholefield will describe how he is doing just that at Coca-Cola.

Over two years, Jim consolidated Coca-Cola’s infrastructure and data centers into a shared services environment – a transformation that brought massive cost reductions and the ability to define a new service management framework. Last year, he continued the transformation with an infrastructure and application rationalization project that moved critical SAP applications to the cloud. The result? The ability to manage the cost, quality and value of hybrid cloud services offered to business partners.

Jim Scholefield is the Chief Technology Officer for The Coca-Cola Company. Jim is responsible for creating and executing worldwide information technology strategy and infrastructure across The Coca-Cola Company. This includes providing global leadership across the Coca-Cola enterprise on all technology matters.

CHANGING BUSINESS CONVERSATIONS

“TBM has totally changed the conversations we’ve had across the business. The conversations with business owners are much more enriched now than they had been in the past. We can start to talk about the cost of decisions made in the business — around marketing, around card types, around particular requirements that flow through my organization — in a much more data-driven way.

It’s changed the conversation with project teams. We now understand far better the cost of running the developments they are embarking upon, the costs of storage they are asking for, and the utilization around what they’ve requested. So now we can go back and challenge what they’ve requested.

And it’s changed the discussion with our architects. We’re giving them the cost basis from which to simplify our IT estate – something they’ve wanted to do forever – which they’ve struggled to justify. So we’re giving them cost levers to justify some of that.

So it’s challenging some of our long-held beliefs about the cost of IT. It’s driving a service-based discussion across the entire organization. It starts with your board and goes all the way down to your colleagues.”

TBM HERO STORY

Kaiser Permanente

COST REDUCTION WITHOUT SACRIFICING QUALITY

“Just six months ago we were told we had to reduce IT spending. Yet as our membership and our business grows, along with things like images and mobile applications, we continue to experience tremendous growth in demand for our technology capabilities. How do you deliver on those growing demands and manage spending without sacrificing quality? The answer is you manage the business of IT, using facts that make tough decisions possible. Many IT executives operate without these essential facts. These include things like the TCO of your applications, how infrastructure is utilized, and how your business is consuming all of it. These facts help you

identify underutilized assets, assess value for cost, reshape business demand, and shift spending from run-the-business to grow-the-business. In other words, they can help you grow cost-effectively. As Chairman of the TBM Council Health Services Workgroup, I’ve talked to many other executives about this approach. It’s a transformational journey, and learning from one another helps accelerate our journey together.”
