NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B August 8, 2021
THE TRUE SOURCE OF OUR STRENGTH
Welcome to our weekly Parish bulletin!
One month ago, the Haitian president Jovenel Moise
was murdered in a humiliating and horrific manner. That
was an extreme outrage to the Haitian people and a
great suffering for so many. All the Haitian communities
in Massachusetts gathered at Our Lady of Mount Car-
mel’s this past Saturday August 7 for a memorial mass
for the deceased president and many other victims of
violence in the Caribbean nation. We truly appreciate
such a celebration which stands as a healing process to
the afflicted. Once again, our help is in the name of the
Lord, the Almighty one, who constantly sustains and
keeps strong the Haitian people despite so much suffer-
ing throughout their troubled history.
I’ve been thinking of the manna in the desert that fed the
Hebrews as they traveled to the Promised Land. What
kind of food was it? Was it bread? Meat? Vegetable? Or
something else? Today everybody is looking for a perfect
food, the right food that gives health, all the vitamins we
need, food that helps us look good, slim, and healthy.
Commercials often pretend they have it. Here it is! There
it is! Bring your money! It seems to me that the manna in
the desert should have been this right food people are
looking for. But in this weekend’s gospel, Jesus is saying
that the manna, no matter how precious it was for the
Israelites, is nothing compared to the bread he proposes.
He, Jesus, is the true bread of heaven, the bread that
satisfies the deepest hunger of our lives. The manna in
the desert was just a sign of this heavenly bread. It sus-
tained the Israelites on their journey to the Promised
Land. But it could not produce eternal life for them. The
bread which Jesus offers is to sustain us not for one day
but for eternity. This is the perfect food which heals both
body and soul and strengthens our journey to heaven. I
am the living bread that came down from heaven; who-
ever eats this bread will live forever, Jesus says. Are we
ready to welcome that food? Are we ready to give up all
other cheap food for the bread that lasts forever? When
we gather for Eucharist, we remember that we, the Bap-
tized, are priests celebrating the Event which is at the
source of our strength and resilience. We are all God's
people receiving the food that sustains and shapes us as
one body in our journey toward God. Cardinal Henri de
Lubac says it right: "the Church makes the Eucharist; the
Eucharist makes the Church".
Have a good weekend!
