Following Film Noir Conventions
In Fatal Motive
Men in Suits
All of the men in typical Film Noir are usually in suits. We conformed
with this to imply
status and to give
the film a more 40’s
to 50’s style.
Dark lighting and setting
Chiaroscuro is the experimentation between the contrast of light and
dark. Film noir uses
this a lot and
therefore, we used
dark lighting to set
the mood.
Black and White
As the technology didn’t allow full colour at the time, black and
white film was the
accepted standard,
we preferred the
look of black and
white so we used it.
Antihero
Usually, the main male character is a flawed protagonist that
seeks redemption
after getting
involved with the
Femme Fatale.
Femme Fatale
The Femme Fatale lures in the antihero with the intention of
manipulating him
for her own gain,
ours make him
kill for her.
Detective/Moral Majority
The voiceover is usually the detective and he is usually a strong
presence in
terms of
narrative, which
is what ours is.
Red LipstickThe Femme Fatale usually wears bright red lipstick as a continuation of her sexuality used
to manipulate
people, ours
wears red lipstick
for that reason.
Smoking
Smoking is a huge part of film noir iconography and this is used
rather heavily in
our film. This
gives a more
noir style to the
piece.
Music
The second music piece is heavily jazz inspired. The popular music style
at the time was jazz and
it therefore featured
heavily in the film
industry.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en--scene was nearly all 50s furniture, which was current at the time of film noir’s popularity and this
gives the film
authenticity for a film
set in the 1950’s.
Enigma
Usually, the film’s title sequence sets some enigma. A film such as
double indemnity
explains the murder
happened, but draws
you in and you want to
know what happens.
