FISHERS OF MEN

Fr. Jorge A. Román One of the most popular activities during the Summer in Mammoth Lakes is fishing; people fish as a sport, not just necessarily to keep the fish for cooking, instead the fish are returned to the water resulting in extraordinary amounts of fish growth. When they are caught they are approximately four inches in length but if returned to the water they can measure up to two feet or more. This is a sport I have not practiced, but they say that the success depends on the type of bait that is used, once the bait is devoured by the fish it is trapped and it attempts to escape until it is finally picked up by the fisherman and it gradually stays still. Father Paul would tell me that some fishermen, in order to keep the fish fresh, would keep them moored in the water, but you take the chance of a bear passing by and taking them and in response to the cries of an angry fisherman, the bear would merely turn and look at him as if saying: is there a problem? Jesus calls his disciples who are fishermen and invites them to seek other types of fishing ... To be fishers of men. What an extraordinary mission! How do you fish for men and what kind of bait do you use? The bait is provided by Jesus himself. LOVE is the bait, a Divine Love that is happily devoured, but once the bait is bitten, also one struggles to escape in order to continue the routine of living in sin. Being out of what it is our environment leads us to fight until finally we die. Tragic destiny! However, it is necessary to kill that which causes us true death, which is sin, when at first it causes us pleasure, it leaves us with more pain, suffering, loneliness and misery. Dying into sin to resurrect a true life of fulfillment, love, optimism and genuine happiness. Of course, there's the risk that someone evil snatches us from the fisherman who caught us for Christ and wants to keep us from Him. There is also the risk of wanting to stay with the fisherman and not wanting to reach Christ, who is the one who sent the fishermen. It occurs often in churches when we adhere much to a favorite Priest, that we are not able to accept another let alone hear the message of who sent the fishermen and come to say, as expressed by Paul in the second reading today: ¨ I am of Paul, or I am of Apollos, or I am of Peter ¨. Is Christ asunder by chance? Not seek division where there should be unity. If we are of Christ, let us be caught in His love, and live in that Love that trapped us, loving everyone like He Himself loves us.

PESCADORES DE HOMBRES

Una de las más atractivas actividades durante el Verano en Mammoth Lakes es la pesca deportiva; incluso, hay un tipo de pesca en la que no interesa quedarse con los pescados para luego cocinarlos, sino que se les regresa al agua y se les deja vivir

dándose un fenómeno extraordinario de crecimiento en los peces, porque cuando se pescan miden unos diez centímetros y cuando se platica de la pesca llegan a medir hasta medio metro o más. Este es un deporte que yo no he practicado, pero me dicen los pescadores que el éxito depende del tipo de carnada que se pone en el anzuelo que una vez devorado por el pez, queda atrapado y lucha por zafarse hasta que finalmente es recogido por el pescador y poco a poco queda inmóvil. Me platicaba el Padre Paul que algunos pescadores, para mantener frescos los pescados, los meten amarrados en el agua, pero se llega a dar el caso de que algún oso pase y se los lleve y ante los gritos de enojo del pescador, el oso se limita a voltear a verle como diciendo: ¿Algún problema? Jesús llama a sus discípulos que son pescadores y los invita a buscar otro tipo de pesca… Ser pescadores de hombres. ¡Que misión tan extraordinaria! ¿Cómo se puede pescar a los hombres y que tipo de carnada hay que usar? La carnada la provee el mismo Jesús. Es la carnada de AMOR, un Amor Divino que felizmente se devora, pero una vez mordido el anzuelo, también se lucha por zafarse para seguir viviendo en la rutina del pecado. El ser sacado de lo que es nuestro medio, nos lleva a luchar, hasta que finalmente morimos. ¡Trágico destino! Sin embargo, es necesario morir a lo que nos causa la verdadera muerte que es el pecado que si en un principio nos causa placer, nos deja más dolor, sufrimiento, soledad y miseria. Morir al pecado para poder resucitar a una verdadera vida de plenitud, amor, optimismo y auténtica felicidad. Claro está que no falta el riesgo que llegue un malvado que nos arrebate del pescador que nos atrapó para Cristo y nos quiera apartar de El. También existe el riesgo de querernos quedar con el pescador y no querer llegar a Cristo que es el que mandó a los pescadores. Sucede muy frecuentemente en las Iglesias cuando nos apegamos tanto al Sacerdote favorito, que no somos capaces de aceptar a otro y mucho menos el escuchar el mensaje de quién ha mandado a los pescadores y llegamos a decir como lo expresa San Pablo en la segunda lectura de hoy: ¨Yo soy de Pablo, o yo soy de Apolo, o yo soy de Pedro¨. ¿Acaso Cristo está dividido? No busquemos división donde debe haber unidad. Si somos de Cristo, dejémonos atrapar en su Amor y vivamos en ese mismo Amor que nos atrapó amando a todos como El mismo nos ama.

Diocese of Stockton Plan of Reorganization Approved by Court

On January 10, 2017, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California, Judge Christopher M. Klein, Presiding, ap-proved the Roman Catholic Bishop of Stockton’s consensual Plan of Reorganization. The Plan received nearly unanimous approval in voting by the sexual abuse survivors and other credi-tors. The Plan provides $15 million to survivors of sexual abuse as well as non-monetary commitments which are important aspects of any healing process. The Plan demonstrates the Dio-cese of Stockton’s commitment to provide for survivors of sexu-al abuse in a fair, just and equitable manner from its available resources. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Stockton filed bankruptcy on Jan-uary 15, 2014. After months of negotiations and with the assis-tance of a court-appointed mediator, the Diocese’s Plan reflects the resolution of many issues with the creditors committee, insurance carriers and other parties. Key provisions of the Plan include:

$15 million through cash contributions and a promisso-ry note to fund a trust for the exclusive benefit of survivors of clergy sexual abuse,

payment of at least 50% of what is owed to general unsecured creditors,

restructuring of secured loans, funding for the Plan coming from the Roman Catholic

Bishop of Stockton, settling insurance carriers and certain other entities associated with the Diocese of Stockton. The approved consensual Plan will allow the Diocese to exit bankruptcy within the next few weeks. The Diocese with lim-ited financial assets will be able to continue its essential minis-tries and services to meet the needs of the parishioners and others who rely on the Diocese’s ministry, education, and chari-table outreach. “We wish to thank all of the parties, including the court appoint-ed mediator Judge Gregg W. Zive, Judge Klein, the sexual abuse survivors, the insurers, the creditors’ committee, and their re-spective counsel, our counsel, and the entire Catholic communi-ty, for helping bring this very difficult chapter in the history of the Diocese to an equitable resolution,” said Bishop Stephen Blaire. COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA

Plan de Reorganización Para la Diócesis de Stockton fue Aprobado por el Tribunal

El 10 de enero de 2017, el Tribunal de Quiebras de Estados Unidos para el Distrito Oriente de California, Presidiendo el Juez Christopher M. Klein, aprobó el Plan de Consenso para la Reorganización presentado por Obispo Romano Católico de Stockton. El Plan recibió la aprobación casi unánime en votación por los sobrevivientes de abuso sexual y otros acreedores. El Plan provee $ 15 millones a los sobrevivientes de abuso sexual así como los compromisos no monetarios que son aspectos importantes de cualquier proceso de curación. El Plan demuestra que el compromiso de la Diócesis de Stockton con los sobrevivientes de abuso sexual en una manera justa y equitativa según sus recursos disponibles. El Obispo Romano Católico de Stockton se declaró en quiebra el 15 de enero de 2014. Después de meses de negociaciones y con la ayuda de un mediador designado por la Corte, el Plan de la diócesis refleja la resolución de muchos problemas con el Comité de Acreedores, compañías de seguros y otras partes interesadas. Disposiciones fundamentales del Plan incluyen:

$ 15 millones a través de las contribuciones en efectivo y un pagaré para financiar un fideicomiso para el beneficio exclusivo de los sobrevivientes de abuso sexual del clero,

el pago de por lo menos el 50% de lo que se debe a los acreedores en general, sin garantías,

reestructuración de préstamos garantizados, financiamiento para el Plan que emergerá del Obispo

La Colecta de la próxima semana es para la Iglesia en América Latina. LA PRESENTACION DEL SEÑOR.- El Jueves 2 de Febrero celebramos la Presentación de Jesús al Templo. El anciano Simeón lo reconoció como ¨LUZ DE LAS NACIONES¨, es por eso que se invita a los fieles a que traigan velas que podrán encender en sus hogares como la presencia de es Luz de Cristo que viene a iluminar nuestras vidas. Por eso, esta Celebración también es conocida como ¨LA CANDELARIA¨. En ese día, se acostumbra traer las imágenes del Niño Jesús que se le ha levantado del Nacimiento Navideño y se le viste como Rey para ser bendecido. También bendeciremos la verdadera imagen del Niño Jesús en sus hijos de carne y hueso. La Misa será a las 6 p.m. en la Parroquia de San José. Les recordamos a los que encontraron el muñequito en la Rosca de Reyes que deben de traer los tamales para compartir al final de la Misa.

RETIRO DE SANACION POST ABORTO.- Quienes por alguna circunstancia tuvieron que practicar un aborto, queda una herida en el alma que es difícil sanar. PRESENTATION OF THE LORD - Thursday, February 2, 2017 we will celebrate the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Simeon recognized him as “LIGHT OF NATIONS”, that is why the faithful are invited to bring candles that can be lit in their homes, as the presence of light signifies Christ who comes to enlighten our lives. This celebration is also known as “CANDLEMASS”. On that day, it is customary to bring images of the Child Jesus that has risen from Christmas Nativity and dress him as King in preparing him to be blessed. We also bless the true image of Jesus in your children. We will have the regular Mass at 7 a.m. in the Rectory and 6 p.m. in the Church. After the Mass we will enjoy the tamales from those who found the doll in the Kings Cake on Epiphany.

MASS AND BENEDICTION.- Every first Friday of the month we have the Mass and Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament at Saint Joseph Church. Come this Friday, February 3, at 7 p.m.

CELEBRANT SINGERS.- It is an extraordinary musical group with 46 women and men who sing marvelous and travel through the world giving a positive message of joy in the service of God. They will be with us on Saturday March 24 to sing in the evening Mass and then giving us a Concert that promise to be an unique experience of energy and joy. Part of their experience is to be housed with host families to have the opportunity of knowing more of the culture of every place they are visiting.
