The Legend of

Tombak Baru Kelinting

This legend is from Mangiran village, which is located in Bantul district and

southern Yogyakarta. It was told that day the village was called Kademangan

Mangiran. There was a figure named Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo.

When we look up a map, Mangiran village is abut on Kota Gede (Gede

city) which is now wellknowned by its silver craftmenship. At that time, Mangiran

was a new Kadipaten (district) called Mataram. Before it existed, it was a jungle

called Mentaok. That jungle was ordered by Ki Pemanahan, one of the

commander of Pajang Kingdom who was gifted with that jungle for he had killed

Arya Panangsang. Arya Panangsang was an Adipati (district leader) who

mutinied to Sultan Adiwijaya who is a great ruler of Pajang. But the man who

finally ruled Kadipaten Mataram was Sutawijaya since he was one who ended

Panangsang live with his sacred weapon, the Kiai Plered Spear. It is him who

was famous with his title Panembahan Senapati.

Page 14: Folktale from Aceh - mgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.commgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.com/resources/IND -ING LAPORAN.pdf1 Folktale from Aceh The honest flutist Long time ago, in a small hut that stands

Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo denied to be subject unto Panembahan

Senapati since Mangiran village (now is known as Kabupaten Bantul) used to

be a Perdikan district which means glorious land. For that reason, Ki Ageng

Mangir Wonoboyo refused to pay tribute to Senapati.

Sita, the story owner, further told that Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo had a

knife. It was simple in shape, not really big, and identical to a kitchen knife. But

in truth, that knife contained a great power. That‟s why when a villager,

Sarinem, came to Kademangan to borrow the knife, Ki Wonoboyo didn‟t give it

soon. After she explained that she need the knife for preparing a Bersih Desa

(village-cleaning) ritual, the request was approved on condition that she must be

carefull. The knife must not be placed on a pretty girl‟s lap. She agreed the

condition and immediately left Kademangan after she got what she needed.

As commonly did in Bersih Desa rites, all people came and prepared

meals and its wraps, banana leaves and jati leaves. The seniors had their own

place to sit as well as the girls. While working, the girls joked and laughed each

other and talked about some boys. Sarinem bothered Wirati whom believed to

be the most beautifil girl, by some boys, but Darijah confirmed that Sarinem was

the flower in every boys‟ mouths. Other girls aggreed with Darijah while showing

some evidence at the same time. As an example, when some young troops of

Kadipaten Mataram visited the village. Sarinem then bashful and her face

became redish. Athough it was so cold after raining, Sarinem felt hot. It was wet

under her arms. At that moment, Sarinem‟s face became more beautiful for

there was a passion in her heart. Unwillingly, she put the powerful knife on her

lap and disappeared in a suddent. In fact, the knife strangely went into her

body.

Page 15: Folktale from Aceh - mgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.commgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.com/resources/IND -ING LAPORAN.pdf1 Folktale from Aceh The honest flutist Long time ago, in a small hut that stands

Knowing the powerful knife of Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo disappeared,

Sarinem felt afraid. In her mind, Ki Wonoboyo would be so angry. Slowly her

face became pale and she finally keeled over. Other girls around immediately

helped her as well as other people who were working for the rite. When her

father, Ki Tali Wangsa, known the incident, he soon told Ki Ageng Mangir

Wonoboyo. It was so strange! Hearing the news, Ki Wonoboyo just smiled. Ki

Ageng told Ki Tali Wangsa not to be worried. He promised to cope with the

problem soon. How? Ki Ageng calmly said that Sarinem was now pregnant. To

clean the ignominy of having a pregnant without husband, Ki Ageng would

marry her. By doing so, the village-cleaning rite was also became the wedding

rite for Ki Ageng and Sarinem.

Several days after the wedding, Ki Ageng said to Sarinem that he had

decided to go for a meditation. Ki Jagabaya would be appointed as temporal

leader and responsible for the safety of Kademangan while he went out. Ki Tali

Wangsa, Ki Jaran Tirta, and some others were asked to stay in Kademangan

while Ki Ageng do his meditation.

Nine months after the strange happening, came the time for Sarinem to

give birth. At the full moon, in the silent evening, suddenly a rumbling sound

heard. The baby was born. He was not a human baby, but a dragon. All villages

were leaped up. The villagers were worried. Ki Tali Wangsa felt shocked. How

could he has a grandson in a shape of dragon? He questioned himself what sin

he has made that God punished him that hard. But Sarinem was so calm.

Closely she kissed the dragon as a mother her caress her beloved son. Such

was the case, hours later, the dragon

Page 16: Folktale from Aceh - mgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.commgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.com/resources/IND -ING LAPORAN.pdf1 Folktale from Aceh The honest flutist Long time ago, in a small hut that stands

began to ask for food. A hen had been eaten hungrily, then some fish, eggs of

hen and ducks unboiledly.

One night, Sarinem looked sad. When the dragon asked why his mother

was moping, she answered that she had been longed for Ki Wonoboyo, the

dragon‟s father. Sarinem then talk wordy, who realy the dragon‟s father was.

Once she finished, the dragon proposed to find where his father is

contempleting. As a son, he wanted to deliver his dedication to his father. At

first sarinem disagreed. After the Dragon continues to whine, the request

eventually be granted. But the dragon should get a name before he leave, and

always taking care of himself on his way. That night the Dragon got his name,

Baru Kelinting. And soon that night since he really want to see his father, Baru

Kelinting left Kademangan Mangiran for Kali Progo.

Once arrived at the edge of a river, Baru Kelinting immediately plunged

into the river. Soon, he turned into a giant dragon. His eyes were like a pair of

sun, with golden-scaled body, very sharp fangs, and a very pointy pair of horns.

Baru Kelinting who has been transformed produced horrible sound. The

villagers wonder what sound has shook trees and made the roofs rattling, even

some were falling apart. In a short time, Baru Kelinting who is easily hungry

have been swallowed two boatmen who usually ferried people who want to

cross over to the Mataram Progo time for trading. At that time, as it was told by

the Lord of this story, kadipaten Mataram was just growing into a city of trade.

Therefore, it was crowded in Kali Progo. This means Baru Kelinting could easily

obtain its prey.

Page 17: Folktale from Aceh - mgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.commgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.com/resources/IND -ING LAPORAN.pdf1 Folktale from Aceh The honest flutist Long time ago, in a small hut that stands

17

Then the story of Baru Kelinting began to spread. Anxiety started to hit

people. Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo heard that whispers. Inwardly, he had

guessed that Baru Kelinting must be the baby in Sarinem bladder. If true, the

Baru Kelinting is the change in the form of a kitchen knife which was originally a

simple form that came into a stomach of good-looking girl. Since people already

knew that sarinem was the wife of Ki Wonoboyo, people would say that Baru

Kelinting was the son of Wonoboyo. Now, Baru Kelinting made a trouble. Not

only disrupting, but but also killing and eating humans. Wonoboyo thought if he

does not act soon, Mataram army and even Pajang will come to demolish his

own son. Wonoboyo himself would be arrested and chrged in front of a crowd

as the puppet master, making people miserable.

One night, he came out of the contempleting cave on the slopes of Mount

Merapi. He walked to the south following the flow of Progo river. Finally, after

seven days and seven nights journey, they were brought together. Baru

Kelinting surprised to see this so-calmed man. His appearance was usual, said

simply, but it has strange charm. Therefore, no matter how hungry he is, Baru

Kelinting tried to refrain. The flashing of Ki Wonoboyo made Baru Kelinting

bowing. Then, breezy night wind told the giant dragon that a man in front is his

father. Baru Kelinting kneeing. However, it was rejected by Wonoboyo.

Wonoboyo said that all this time Baru Kelinting had created disasters. It meant

that his apppearance on earth has failed as he was a son of a man who has a

good ideal to reinforce peace and serenity. For those reasin, if Baru Kelinting

wanted to show devotion to his father, he must atone for it first. Baru Kelinting

ordered to encircle the Mount Merapi, If the length of his body was able to

surround the mountain's belly, then prostration accepted.

Page 18: Folktale from Aceh - mgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.commgmpbing-kkr.yolasite.com/resources/IND -ING LAPORAN.pdf1 Folktale from Aceh The honest flutist Long time ago, in a small hut that stands

The test began. Baru Kelinting surrounded Mount Merapi. However, the

belly of the mountain was vast that Baru Kelinting had to stretch his body to

make his snout touch with the tip of his to tail. This waas the real test. When it

remained one meter to succeed, Baru Kelinting began to desperate. If he is

forced the stretch, his body would break. Without asking permission, he stuck

out his tongue. On that moment, Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo slammed a

powerful hand. Baru Kelinting screamed. His tongue was cut off and turned into

a spearhead. The head, body and tail of the dragon turned into a log, a kind of

Waru wood. Ki Wonoboyo immediately picked up the tip of the spear and the

wood to be assembled. That night, Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo acquired a

powerful weapon called Baru Kelinting Spear. Purportedly, it was as powerful as

Kiai Plered stored in Mataram.

When the spear was brought home by Ki Ageng to Kademangan, he felt

an evening breeze. A voice that says, "I will be faithful to you". Whose voice

was that? No doubt that it was Baru Kelinting voice. The Dragon had found the

right shape to serve and maintain the safety and security of Kademangan and

its entire people. And for Sarinem, she was sad firstly. However, after a deep

thinking she could accepted the reality. Her sadness slowly disappeared and

turned into a sense of devotion when she was appointed as Nyi Ageng Mangir

Wonoboyo. She became the mother of all Kademangan and together with the

people experiencing their joys and sorrows.

King Bongsu Sakti was intrigued to hear it, then he would beg his

mother to cross Segunung Berintang country. King Bongsu Sakti wanted to

see with his own eyes. Was it true as told by the captain of the ship, Siti Dewi

Johansyah Nyanye? Or was a mere calumny?

Before leaving, Princess Jerah Jerende, his mother, handed glove and

magic treasures wand to King Bongsu Sakti and advised "When you comes at

the shoreline, live in well-behaved, avoid misconception with others. Follow the

behavior of hens. Do not like the rooster that have many enemies. It the best for

you to follow the behavior of ducks, which have many friends."

"Thank you, mom" King Bongsu Sakti said while he received a gift from

her mother's hand and leave a message “Please, mother frequently see Selasih

it is withered, means I get the troubles on the way. If the tree is dead, it means I

"Good-bye, my son!" said Princess Jerah Jendere, while waving her

hand and said a poetry:

Hendak linggi kukasih linggi

Linggi bertuan berdaun jangan

Hendak pergi bunda kasih pergi

Pergi sebulan bertahun jangan

And King Bongsu Sakti said the poetry too:

After a long time crossed the sea, King Bongsu Sakti arrived on an island

that had a vast field as far as the eyes could see. In the middle of vast fields, he

met the old man and he said, "Hey, old man, what is your name and why do you

live in this meadow? What is the name of the country in this area?".

The old man replied, "Wak Pakih Jenang is my name, I am running the

penalty of King Johansyah Nyanye for about tens years here. Because the king

had played Pangkah Gasing againts me when we are still teens. Ehmm..the

King is cruely.”

“It‟s only because you are playing Gasing, you get the penalthy for tens

years?”

“Yes, because the cruel of the king of this Segunung Berintan Country,

Pulau Intan," explained Wak Pakih Jenang . "Imagine that, when I am throwed

“Yes, Wak Pakih Jenang." said King Bongsu Sakti. "But I want to go to

the king‟s palace. Show me how to go there!"

“ Straight toward the rising sun," explained Wak Jenang. "There is a

triangle branch of road. The palace is on the right side of the road. The left side

of the road is a way to Pekan market and you can shop anything, and in the

middle of the road is Princess Lencana Muda playground."

After beg respectfully, King Bongsu Sakti walked and decided to choose

the middle of the road. So the trip is easier. The king wore ugly glove pembatak.

He looked stupid and disguted. At the same time, Lencana Muda Princess with

her servant wanted to take a bath at the pond, swam happily.

"It's a good chance," thought King Bongsu Sakti. Then, he took all of the

gold and jeweleries and Lencana Muda Princess‟ clothess that laid on the edge

"Thief ... the ugly thief ..., "they shrieked loudly. "Return the clothes of

Putri Lencana Muda ...."

"I will give them back," replied King Bongsu Sakti who wore ugly sarong.

"But, to be redeemed with the ring on her little finger of Putri Lencana Muda

itself!" he said. Because of fear, she gave her ring to the disgusting ugly faced

thief.

What a great anger the King Johansyah Nyaye heard about that, it is no

indescribable. The King commanded all valiant commanders to capture the

thieves and put it into the prison bars. There he was convicted and whipped

cruelly.

Once in Lenggang Cahaya Pagaruyung palace, Princess Jerah Jendere

felt sadly the seed basil tree became wilt in the garden. It meant that the Prince

got a problem in another country. After that, by undercovering as an old man,

Princess Jerah Jendere wandered to Segunung Berintan through the vast

savanah.

According to the instructions Wak Pakih Jenang, Princess Jerah Jendere

chose the right corner to the palace to meet King Bongsu Sakti who was kept in

prison. Shortly, she said to him, “Dear my son King Bongsu Sakti. Mother of

sacred worship and return to my home in swaddling clothes cindai gauze,

means a tiger that has an offspring! "

Shortly after that, appeared a fierce young tiger, ran in a mock, and

destroyed the people of Negeri Segung Berintan. The King Johansyah Nyaye

was anxious, afraid of looking at all the brave valliants ran away. The King

uttered,

"Please ... who is able to capture the rage tiger? "

"I do, I do!" said the ugly thief in jail.

"Let him go!" The King ordered, and the thieves wearing sarong

The Fierce

Eagle

Long before the island of Buru was divided into North Buru sub-district

with capitals Namlea and South Buru with capital Leksula lies the story

of Tifu. Its location is protected in a beautiful cove and calm. But in front

of the country there is the open sea, the Banda Sea with the natural

wealth of the sea, the stretch of sand, and the pounding of the waves are

beautiful. At the time of the tides there are many kinds of animals such as

shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and keloman. Beside that there are plants

such as gangang red, green gangang, sea urchins and starfish.

Several years later, there arose a thought community leaders that

the country Tifu background position was not so good. The reason is

they form a beautiful bay as the pool cover off a beautiful sea view.

Therefore, the country became the port city of South Buru district.

Although the country had been abandoned by several generations,

as the capital city and the first port on the island of Buru, the country still

leaves a memory of a story. This story until now is still the talk of the

population the next generation.

Not far from Tifu there was a mountain named Garuda. When

viewed from the harbor, the color of the mountain seems rosy as the

enchanting panorama. On the mountain there were two stone canal, but it

was located far apart from each other. In the rock's burrow nesting pair of

wild birds named Garuda. This bird species was the largest eagle on the

island of Buru. Because of the bird, especially when they developed

wings, when passing through the country of Tifu almost half the country

turned into a dark shadow from a bird. However, a pair of birds did not

live together in burrows Garuda mount. They dwelled on their nest in the

burrows of rock. However, when they were out together often.

The most virulent types of hawks among all the birds of prey. The

bird has sharp claws suitable for grasping prey and pounce. Her feet were

sturdy and perfect for quickly immobilize prey. Especially for quick kill its

prey, the bird always relied on skill. Its fur was dense and thick scaly legs

to protect her from the sting of the other animals devour animals.

In general, this type of large-headed eagle and often tasseled and

big-eyed, the privilege of flying birds could fly at high speed and spent the

whole day. The female eagle was very keen to find prey. If they did not

get another animal prey, like fish, shrimp, etc, people can afford to

become their prey. But not the inhabitants of the area around where the

bird lives, but in other places.

One time, foreign ships passed the area. Female birds out of their

burrows and rock flying towards the ship. As he roared like a tiger, he

attacked the ship. Fill the vessel with human cargo was flown to the nest.

The bird screamed and appaled to the earth and the sorroundings

declared excitement. This always happened.

On top of Garuda mountain was stored and ready to eat delicious

food by the bird. These foods can be stored for a week or more while

awaiting the arrival of another ship. Terrifying news about the bird

malignancy had spread everywhere, especially heard by the Chinese

sailors. They were trying to figure out how best to tackle the bird

malignancy. Options to be determined whether the bird is gone or those

who were targeted prey.

Some time later sailed another Chinese ship. The ocean waves

had been passed, Deep sea with natural wealth such as a giant fish and

even small plants to weeds in the form of microscopic marine gangang a

beautiful landscape for them. Furthermore as there were a seabed trough

of water, volcanoes, reef, and coral are all very amazing. But for man of

the sea, they were the source of life's great. Since the ship was leaving

port, they had determined a way to deal with bird malignancy. Prescribed

manner, that is when they are in the area Tifu all fishers with a pointed

iron 3 meters should be prepared. All the metal on the ship to be heated.

And the entire crew must be on deck waiting for the command of the ship

captain.

When they are in South Buru ocean waters, the ship captain asked

the crew to be alert. At the same time both of the giant birds were on
