Swamp Adventures

So this weekend I went down to Waycross, Georgia, for the Sierra Club annual retreat. We camped out at the Laura Walker state park and went to the Okefenokee Swamp in Folkston.

I took a boat tour of the swamp, which was simply gorgeous.

And there were

Alligators!

Ahh!!!!!!!

That evening we had a costume party for Halloween.

Then on Sunday, I headed down to the Folkston Funnel with Mark and Neill!!!

The Folkston Funnel is located at MP 602.2 on the Nahunta Subdivision of the CSXT, Jacksonville services lame. At this point, the Jesup Subdivision joins the Nahunta Sub. From this point south it is double track main line to Jacksonville, Florida.

Yes, that is from their brochure. Yes, I get it, but no, I can not paraphrase it. Main line to Jacksonville is the point here.

40 freight (per One) and 6 Amtrak (per Neill) trains go through the funnel a day.

Sadly, we saw none.

So we hit the platform at a lull, and apparently, Mark & Neill were not as committed as me to see a train. I would have waited there hours just to get a picture for this darn blog. But I had carpooled with them.

O well, they were great company.

On the way home (by car, since Waycross is officially BFE) I saw cotton growing!

Whoo cotton!
