Guests enjoyed a candy bar, a delicious buffet dinner and a free silent auction, with prizes including a $100 gift card for Fude Inspired Cuisine and Wine Bar, a 1-year free PVR rental from Shaw and a trip for two anywhere that WestJet flies. The evening was hosted by Folklorama’s 2011 Adult Ambassadors General Susan Shortill and Frédéric Jubinville and honoured many hard working volunteers, including pavilion coordinators, tour guides, committee members, ambassadors, Kick-off volunteers and many more. A special part of the evening was the presentation to 2010’s outstanding volunteers. Honourary member Joanne Malbranck was on hand as the Al Malbranck Memorial Volunteer Award was presented to three extraordinary volunteers whose names were drawn from names submitted by each pavilion. The winners this year included Relly Araneta from the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion, Johnny Teixiera from the Casa do Minho Portuguese Pavilion and Olga Pogrebinsky from the Russian Pavilion. They each received a $250 gift certificate of their choice. A big thank you to Canad Inns for hosting the evening, Manitoba Lotteries and Cambrian Credit Union for supporting and honouring our volunteers, and the event sponsors and suppliers. Running for the Board

• Folklorama welcomed 447,000 visits to 45 pavilions this year, a three-year attendance high.

• The festival also experienced a record high of 122 group tours, including eight new late night tours.

• Folklorama Kick-off, presented by Manitoba Lotteries on July 31, had an estimated 13,000 people in attendance.

• Shaw TV broadcast the Kick-off live to an estimated 50,000 viewers on Channel 9 and to an estimated 250,000 additional viewers Canada-wide on Shaw Direct Channel 299.

2010 Festival Highlights

The nomination process for the 2011/2012 Folklorama board of directors is underway and the nominating committee is soliciting for potential candidates.

If you are interested in running for the board you must be a member of Folklorama or a member of a member organization. Each candidate is required to submit the nomination form along with their resume and two letters of reference from other community or not-for-profit organizations by January 28, 2011 (date subject to change). Packages that included information about the process of nomination, criteria for what the board is looking for and eligibility were mailed out at the end of October to member presidents.

After all applications have been submitted, the nominating committee interviews applicants and then reports to the membership, presenting their choices 30 days prior to the Annual General Meeting(AGM). At that point, members have until three days before the AGM to question the nominations. Other members not on the slate may be nominated by three other members. The election then takes place at the AGM. After the new board has been elected, each board member submits what committee they would like to chair. The nominating committee meets with them and decides who will chair what, unless the other board members challenge and nominate a different board member, other than themselves, to be chair of that committee.

If you would like more information, Folklorama will be hosting an information evening on January 20, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:30pm at our office, 2nd Floor - 183 Kennedy Street, for members interested in running for the board of directors.

Message from the PresidentFirst, I’d like to congratulate everyone on a tremendously successful festival. The two weeks of Folklorama were alive with fun and excitement as all 45 pavilions celebrated diversity and promoted cultural understanding by showcasing their unique cultures. We also achieved a three-year attendance high of 447,000 pavilion visits and for the first time ever, Folklorama Kick-off was broadcast live to 250,000 viewers Canada-wide on Shaw Direct Channel 299. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of our dedicated volunteers for your time, effort, passion and commitment. You should all be very proud.

I’d also like to congratulate the six recipients of our Mark & Dorothy Danzker Scholarship of Excellence. Their commitment to preserving cultural heritage, along with their academic excellence, is truly outstanding. When the time comes next year, I encourage all of our youth to consider applying. To update you on the board of directors’ current focus, we are continuing work on the governance review, with one goal being to finalize the scopes and mandates of all the committees, and are presently reviewing the strategic and business plans in preparation for the year to come. Also, with a focus on quality and consistency at all pavilions, we are carrying on with setting quality standards for entertainment through our established process of collecting input from members and working together to achieve our common goals. With the nominating process underway, I encourage all of our members to consider running for the board of directors. The strength of this organization begins with you, and we are always looking for individuals that can help us continue to grow and flourish. Thank you for your support. To my fellow board members and to the Folklorama staff, thank you for your continued hard work and dedication. Lastly, on behalf of myself, my family and the board, I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season. All the best,

Mohamed Ismath

Folklorama Honoured byTourism Winnipeg

Folklorama is a proud recipient of the Tourism Winnipeg Award of Distinction, handed out at Travel Manitoba’s Manitoba Tourism Awards gala event. The award, chosen by Economic Development Winnipeg Inc./Tourism Winnipeg, recognizes any individual, organization or business which has positively impacted the development of Winnipeg’s tourism industry and considers factors such as economic impact, uniqueness, city profile, community involvement, commitment to excellence, innovative marketing and overall dedication to the tourism industry. Generally presented to one organization per year, the Award of Distinction honoured three deserving recipients for 2009: Folklorama, Festival du Voyageur and the Winnipeg Folk Festival, who together had a more than $25 million economic impact. Folklorama’s Murray Greenfield received the Service Excellence Award for his years of service in the tourism industry, a highlight of which was creating the Tourism Awareness Network of Manitoba.
