Llama Tales T his past January, Folklorama member Jay Stoller led his first drum and dance tour to Ghana, West Africa. Jay is a Winnipeg musician specializing in African drumming and long-time member of Folklorama who performs with both Folklorama Teachings and Folklorama Talent. He had lived in Ghana for several years studying his trade and felt that it was important to share his experiences of Ghana and Ghanaian culture with other drumming enthusiasts. e intent behind the tour was to give participants an opportunity to take classes in drumming and dancing within the traditional setting. e tour focused on three specific cultures/regions and their music and dance, including the Ga people using the ‘kpanlogo’ drums. Tour participants witnessed performances by the nationally acclaimed Ghana Dance Ensemble and other professional groups, as well as took part in a traditional funeral and religious ‘possession-dance’ ceremony. To round out the tour, visits were made to a former slave-trade castle, rainforest, lake formed by a meteorite, waterfalls, monkey sanctuary and animal park. e participants also had a three-night stay in a mud house. e tour will run again next year. This was the first time this honour was given to Folklorama, which has been a member of MPI since 1995. INTRODUCING YOUR NEW bOARD OF DIRECTORS!

Folklorama’s new board of directors was appointed at the Annual General Meeting of Folklorama/Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg on March 31 and met on April 13 to elect the president and chair positions. The new and returning faces on the board for 2011-2012 include:

Dr. Rayleen De Luca, ChaiR of LiCensing CommitteeRayleen has been a Folklorama volunteer for over 35 years and has served on the scholarship committee for many years. She is an active member of the Italian community and also aided in the development of the Brazilian Pavilion. She received the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in Health and Wellness and the Outreach Award from the president of the University of Manitoba. This is Rayleen’s third year on the board. She has served as chair of the youth programs committee, which also included the scholarship committee, and chair, member relations.

Yvonne hawryliuk, ChaiR of Youth CommitteeYvonne’s involvement with the Ukraine-Kyiv community started when she was five years old, and she continues to be active with many organizations. She danced for over 25 years with the Orlan Ukrainian Folk Ensemble and is a founding member of the Orlan Alumni Association. She is on the board of directors of the Hoosli Ukrainian Folk Ensemble and is the director of the Vesna Ukrainian Dance School. Yvonne was also Folklorama ambassador general in 2008. This is Yvonne’s third year on the board.

mohamed ismath, PResiDentMohamed has been extensively involved with Folklorama and the Tamil community, serving two years as pavilion coordinator for the Tamil Pavilion and as chair of finance for Folklorama. He also has experience as a board member of the Tamil Cultural Society of Manitoba and of the Sri Lanka Association of Manitoba. This is Mohamed’s fifth year on the board and second year as president.

tracy Balagus, ChaiR of finanCe anD auDit CommitteeTracy is an active member of both the Irish and Ukrainian communities. She is past president of the St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church and has been involved with the Irish community for over 15 years with the Isle of the Shamrock Pavilion, the Irish Association of Manitoba and the McConnell School of Dance Students’ Association. This is Tracy’s third year on the board and first year as chair of finance and audit.

amelia sheocharan, ChaiR of Review CommitteeAmelia has been involved with the Indo Tropical Paradise Pavilion since its inaugural year, and her many contributions to the community have been recognized. She has served as pavilion coordinator and has been a member of the Folklorama licensing committee. She has also been chair, festival development and licensing. This is Amelia’s first year as chair of review and third year on the board.

angie Boehm, ChaiR of memBeRshiP CommitteeAngie has been pavilion coordinator, ambassador and assistant dance coordinator for the Italian Pavilion and has sat on the Club Siciliano of Winnipeg Inc. board of directors. She is currently on the board for the Dante Alighieri Italian Cultural Society and is a member of the Manitoba Association of Volunteer Administration, the Canadian Administrators of Volunteer Resources and the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba. This is Angie’s second year on the board.

gary sarcida, DiReCtoRGary is a member of the Philippine Association of Manitoba and the Law Society of Manitoba. He has been actively involved with the Filipino community for many years as a legal advisor of the Southeastman Filipino Association in Steinbach and a contributor to the Filipino Journal. This is Gary’s sixth year on the board.

Zaleena salaam, DiReCtoRZaleena has served in leadership positions for several cultural and community service organizations in Winnipeg, and for the past 20 years she has been actively involved in the West Indian community. Zaleena is one of the founding members of the WIT Masters Toastmasters Club in Manitoba and has held various positions such as president, vice-president of education and treasurer. She also sat on the board of directors of the Cancer Society of Manitoba and she was honoured to be selected to represent Folklorama as a 2010 adult ambassador general. Zaleena is looking forward to her first year on the board of directors.

Julian giubega, DiReCtoRJulian’s commitment and dedication to the Romanian community is evident in his many years of involvement, during which he has served as president of The Romanian Society of Manitoba Inc. He has also been involved with Folklorama for over 20 years and has served as pavilion coordinator and ambassador for the Romanian Pavilion. This is Julian’s second year on the board.

shubha mathur, DiReCtoRShubha’s involvement with both Folklorama and the Indian community is extensive. She has been an active volunteer and performer for the India Pavilion for many years and has been an instructor at the India School of Dance, Music and Theatre since 2003. Shubha has also acted as ambassador for the India Pavilion, was a Folklorama ambassador general in 2007 and was a judge for the 2010 Ambassador General Competition. This is Shubha’s second year on the board.

Jim Court, DiReCtoRJim has been involved with Folklorama for the last 18 years and has served on the steering and licensing committees in addition to being a pavilion inspector. Jim is an active member of the Scottish community, with experience as president of the Scottish Association of Winnipeg and as pavilion coordinator for the Pavilion of Scotland. This will be his sixth year on the board, having spent two years as chair of festival development, one year as chair of finance, one year as president and last year as chair, finance and audit.

ashley sharpe, ChaiR of sChoLaRshiP CommitteeAshley has been involved in Folklorama for many years as a volunteer and performer at the Pavilion of Scotland. She has been an ambassador for the pavilion and was also an ambassador general for Folklorama in 2009, during which she handled all French media interviews. Ashley brings a background as a teacher, knowledge of Folklorama and involvement with the Scottish community to her second year on the board.

For the fifth year in a row, Folklorama brought the fun and excitement of our festival to the MTS

Centre for Folklorama Night at a Manitoba Moose game, held Friday, March 25.

The sights and sounds of Folklorama were all around, with ambassadors dressed in colourful cultural attire and multicultural performers including Wushu Manitoba, Clyde Heerah and the Paradize Band, Bola Oriyomi, Tom McDermott and Buena Clave keeping the hockey fans entertained with lively song and dance before the game and during the intermissions.

Before the puck dropped, the Folklorama ambassadors general, pavilion ambassadors and the Folklorama Llama took to the ice for an eye-catching flag parade and Cella Lao Rousseau from the Italian Pavilion belted out our national anthem. Folklorama prizes and information were also handed out throughout the evening.

Congratulations to the Manitoba Moose who defeated the Abbotsford Heat in a thrilling 3-2 shootout win and thank you for once again partnering with Folklorama to celebrate Manitoba’s multiculturalism.

Jannette is a Payroll Compliance Practioner (PCP), certified by CDI College. She is responsible for Folklorama’s accounts payable and receivable and various bookkeeping functions that enable the Folklorama office to operate on a daily basis.

Jannette is very approachable and loves to make new friends. She moved to Winnipeg from the Philippines with her husband and three children in 2008.

Eman will be graduating in June with a diploma in Creative Communications through Red River College. He assists in the coordination and implementation of marketing and promotional programs, media relations and other communication vehicles.

Eman loves summer months in Winnipeg where he gets to enjoy all the festivals, camping and running.
