ARCHITECTNAME: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
NATIONALITY: German
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (March 27,1886 – August 17, 1969) was a Germanarchitect. He is commonly referred to and
addressed as Mies, his surname.Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, along withWalter Gropius and Le Corbusier, are wi- dely regarded as the pioneering masters ofModern architecture. Mies, like many of hispost World War I contemporaries, sought
to establish a new architectural style thatcould represent modern times just as Classi- cal and Gothic did for their own eras. He
created an influential twentieth century ar- chitectural style, stated with extreme clarityand simplicity. His mature buildings madeuse of modern materials such as industrialsteel and plate glass to define interior spa- ces. He strived towards an architecture
with a minimal framework of structural or- der balanced against the implied freedomof free-flowing open space. He called his
buildings “skin and bones” architecture. He sought a rational approach that wouldguide the creative process of architecturaldesign. He is often associated with theaphorisms “less is more” and “God is inthe details”.

PROJECT & CONCEPTPROJECT: Barcelona Pavilion
YEAR: 1928
The Barcelona Pavilion was the GermanPavilion for the 1929 International Expo- sition in Barcelona, Spain. This buildingwas used for the official opening of theGerman section of the exhibition. It is an
important building in the history of modernarchitecture, known for its simple formand its spectacular use of extravagantmaterials, such as marble, red onyx andtravertine. The same features of minimali-
sm and spectacular can be applied to theprestigious furniture specifically designedfor the building, among which the iconicBarcelona chair.
WHERE: Barcelona
Mies was offered the commission ofthis building in 1928 after his suc- cessful administration of the 1927Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart. The German Republic entrusted Mieswith the artistic management anderection of not only the BarcelonaPavilion, but for the buildings for allthe German sections at the 1929Universal Exhibition. However, Mies
had severe time constraints—he hadto design the Barcelona Pavilion inless than a year—and was also de- aling with uncertain economic con- ditions. In the years following World War I,Germany started to turn around. Theeconomy started to recover after the1924 Dawes Plan. The pavilion forthe Universal Exhibition was suppo-
sed to represent the new WeimarGermany: democratic, culturallyprogressive, prospering, and thorou- ghly pacifist; a self-portrait througharchitecture. The Commissioner, Ge- org von Schnitzler said it should give“voice to the spirit of a new era”.This concept was carried out with therealization of the “Free plan” and the“Floating room”.
