What is KELTRACK®?

Kelsan® KELTRACK® is a water based liquid frictionmodifier that provides ‘positive’ friction between thewheel and rail. Designed for application on systemsthrough a Portec Rail Products PROTECTOR® IVtrackside top of rail applicator, it provides veryeffective control of wheel squeal in targeted curves.Maintaining the optimum intermediate coefficientof friction (0.35) minimises any impact to brakingand traction. Kelsan® KELTRACK® has also beenshown to have no impact on signalling. Kelsan®

KELTRACK® has achieved unsurpassed, documentednoise reduction in locations identified as being ofparticular concern. Targeting specific curves providesthe most effective and efficient solution forcustomers dealing with this issue.

What is Friction Control?

Kelsan® KELTRACK® is designed to provide anintermediate coefficient of friction on the top of therail. It is water based liquid friction modifier that isapplied directly to the top of rail in targeted areas.When the water evaporates, the material remainspresent as a thin, dry film. In contrast with standardlubricants (oil or grease), Kelsan® KELTRACK® hasan intermediate coefficient of friction (0.35) whichmeans it will not affect traction or braking. Thisintermediate friction level on the top of the rail isoptimum for minimizing wear, energy and lateralforces in a safe and reliable manner.

How is Kelsan®

KELTRACK® applied?

In co-operation with Portec Rail Products,Kelsan® KELTRACK® is applied using a model of thePROTECTOR® IV Trackside Friction Control System.The DC solar power option is ideal in even thecoldest of climates. When AC power is close andconvenient, a universal power conditioning deviceallows for voltage input of 100 - 240 volts at 50 to60 Hz, including lightening surge protection.

The unique properties of Kelsan® KELTRACK®,and the precise, controllable and reliable advantagesof Portec’s application system combine to delivera highly effective targeted curve noise reductionsolution without impacting critical braking orsignalling performance. Wheels experiencing lateralcreep in curves are subject to roll slip oscillations asa result of the frictional characteristics of theinterface layer between the wheel and rail. Theseroll slip oscillations are amplified in the wheel webleading to the familiar squeal as trains negotiatea curve. Noise reduction results have been achievedof up to 27 decibels. Eliminate the noise at its source.
